I love it! The colors are so bright without running into each other and becoming a weird blend like mine tend to do.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
thank you, but my color do run together, I am just careful to put colors that blend well next to each other .... get a color wheel to help with that if needed .... and another part of keeping the color from running together is to put a lay of each color on the tee, and then coming back and adding anohter layer .... BUT, if you try to fully saturate one color in a space before adding other colors, then you could fill that section so much that it over flows into other sections before you have added colors there ... I hope that makes sense ✌🏻

Hello from Corvallis 👋 .... and thank you!! if you are just getting started, here is some info that may help : Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk) I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …
 I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process... Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it ..... This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉 Here is my Beginner's Playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo ✌🏻❤️🌈🥳🙏 Here is a list with some more folds to try out : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2Bzupqjuh_6wdf-wMlgGdAjVaE Plus, there are many other tie-dye artists who share their techniques so others can learn, here is a list I have compiled that were mentioned in the tie-dye pages : kzbin.infochannels Most Dyers use Procion Dyes, so just in case you are looking for sources for those, here are the main places to buy them from in the US : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com

Hey man thanks for all the great tutorials, I have learned a lot from you. I was wondering if you ever do VW or Honda symbols, I have seen the shirts but never have found a tutorial.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
You are welcome, I am glad you find them to be helpful ... as for the VW symbol ... I have folded a few of them, but I did them in two sessions, I folded the circle and the 'V' parts of the symbol and dyed it, then I washed and prepped it again and tied the two legs of the 'W' and dyed them the other way I have done them is with Stitching BUT, I have heard some dyers say that with the VW symbol, you need to tie the inner spaces ... the parts that are not the symbol ... but I have not tried that yet, though I do hope to get back to making some more videos someday soon and the VW is on my list of things to figure out ✌🏻 As for the Honda symbol, I cannot see an easy way to fold at first glance, but I will think on it some more and see if anything comes to me 🙏

I use Gildan Ultra tees, but they also are sewn with Poly thread which does not take the Procion Dyes ... if you want tees sewn with cotton threads ... they can be difficult to find and more expensive, I know Dharma carries some : www.dharmatrading.com/clothing/men/Adult-Premium-Jersey-Tee.html?lnav=clothing_men.html&fbclid=IwAR04CYvBOtZWNrOuR-3gdXIwo2aMy67fBYhuUYwe8p5xxnZH17VOzF0ewDA also, you might ask on some of the tie-dye pages on FB, I know some dyers use them ✌🏻 ... sorry I could not be of more help with this ✌🏻🙏

Just wondering if the tee would turn out symmetrical if one half of the folded tee was dyed one colour and one half was dyed another? I tried to figure it out by just looking at it but I really struggled 😅
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 7 ай бұрын
yeah that can be difficult sometimes to figure out... at those times I will usually fold a tee and dye to to see what happens ... but with how you described the dyeing ... dyeing half one color and half another color, then flipping it and dyeing those same two sections the same or different colors... then yes it should be symmetrical BUT, if by half you mean dyeing the top side (half) one color and the Botton side (half) another color... then you may have symmetrical patterning, but the colors may not be symmetrical .....

Do you find that you get better saturation with the dye when you apply the soda ash last?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
no particularly ... I do it out of convenience ... I used to have two dedicated washers from soaking and spinning out my tie-dyes... they both broke .... so adding the soda ash at the end has made my process easier for right now ... also, I have started mixing my soda ash 2 cups to one gallon of water ✌🏻
@atmissfear3893
@atmissfear3893 2 жыл бұрын
You mixed the soda ash with water like normal and squirted it on? Or did you sprinkle it on dry?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
I have used regular soda ash, mixed one cup to one gallon of water ... but, after reading the Pariah Method by Paul Kenney on one of the tie-dye pages, I upped my soda ash... now I use 2 cups of soda ash to one gallon of water and then I apply a coat of soda ash the same way I would apply a layer of dye, then I flip over and coat the bottom side, then I put in my tub on a rack to batch, this way the excess liquid can drip out ... sometimes, though, this will cause the colors to run jut a bit, but I am fine with that here is my batching method : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM

Good Morning ... for washouts, I use Synthrapol Soap from Dharma, It is pH neutral so it helps to keep the dye particles suspended in the water during washouts, here is a link to it : www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html ALSO, some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap instead of Synthrapol as it to is pH neutral, I have not tried it myself, but I know many dyers use it for washouts ✌🏻 and one other I have heard of is Folex Carpet Cleaner ... once again, it is pH neutral a soap being pH neutral is important with tie-dye as the dyes are activated by a high pH from the soda ash... it is what activates the dyes and causes the chemical bond with the cotton fibers and the dye ... So, if you cannot find one of the soaps above, I would look for a soap/detergent that is pH neutral (you can check the label, if it has any of these names on it : Soda Ash/Sodium Carbonate .... or Baking Soda/Sodium Bicarbonate)

Do you think water harvested from a dehumidifier would be a good substitute for distilled water or rain water for mixing dyes, if dehumidifier water is basically demineralized/distilled water? That would probably save me some $ and trips to the store. Also may prevent plastic waste. ***shrug*** Curious your thoughts.

I have never thought of that (never humid enough to need one here in Oregon) ... but yes I think it should be fine to use that water for mixing dyes ... but I would not drink it 😂 ✌️

Me. Tye dye, my name is Sonja Cherry 🍒 and I am in Massachusetts. I started tye dying about a month ago and have made maybe 15/20 projects. Quick question; once you mix colors in bottles, I only have Dharma right now, do they have a shelf life. I keep throwing away dye. Is muck water worth keeping. Thats 2 questions.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Sonja and welcome to the wonderful world of tie-dye ... was for the dharma procion dyes, as long as you DO NOT put soda ash in when you mix them, I have had mine around for 2-3 weeks at room temp (65-70F here in Oregon, and I put duct tape on my bottles so I can write the mix date on them) after mixing and they still give decent colors ... not as good as freshly mixed, but still great colors... one time the color they give will lighten even more, but they dyes are not bad, just slowly deteriorating ... so I still use them, or if I have a lot of one color after 2-3 weeks, I will add another scoop of dye and blend them again to freshen them up, but I only do this once ALSO, if you get a mini fridge and store the mixed dyes in there, then I have had some dyes that were mixed 2-3 months ago that still give decent colors ... some people like to mix fresh dyes whenever they to tie-dye to get the brighter colors.... I like to mix up a lot at once and then have them available when I am ready to do some tie-dye... so yes, please save your left over dye and continue to use them As for Muck Water.... there is no saving it as there is soda sh mixed in with it so it will not be good to use later.... BUT, if you want to take advantage of the muck, you can put a tied tee in the bottom of the basin or tub that you will be working, then set up you ice dye above it... then all of the muck drips onto the prepped tee first and then sits fully in the muck and since you said you were new, here is my Beginner's Playlist just in case you have not seen it yet : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo I have lots of helpful tips and tricks videos in there... I tend to talk a lot while I am dyeing and too tips out as they come to me .... have fun and I wish you success in your creations!!

Do you always mix salt with your dyes? When should I mix salt into the dye? Advantages and disadvantages...
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
No I do not Always mix Salt in ... but it is supposed to help with Turquoise and Black dyes to make the colors more intense or bright ... in Low Water Immersion Dyeing, the Salt is used to 'push' the dyes out of the water and into the fabric ... but it is a choice to use it or not use it ... Dharma says to use Glauber's salt and I used to buy it from them, but then I found this salty on Amazon and it is what I use now when I add it : amzn.to/3t10ec5 (if you use this link to make your purchase, I receive credit ~ I have to say that when I post links 😉 )
