William later realized that his budget idea meant cutting back on all the fun things he used to blow his money on, settling for cheap-quality meals and being ridiculed by his peers for being so stingy with money. He swore off taking advice from dead historical figures ever again. Later he took up a career in hustling.

This was also at a time when the minimum wage, in 1955 since i couldn't find data from earlier, was equivalent to 8.49 in today's money(2023). Federal minimum wage now is still 7.25. For a 40 hour work week that's ~1360 a month in 1955 per inflation, and 1160 today. And it's worse calculating from 1956: the $1 minimum wage is equivalent to 11.15 today, or ~1780 a month. So these days it's much more likely that it's an earnings problem, not a spending problem.

According to inflation calculator for 2019 50 cents was worth around $5 in 1951. So $2 for the dance was around $20 (kind of pricy for a high school dance) So Bill was making around $60 a week.. BTW, Bob could buy that car because they were very affordable in the 1950s. After 1970s prices of cars went through the roof because of unions.

You know it’s ironically funny and ironically naïve about their joke “ can your slave press my suit” is that they probably aren’t even aware that Benjamin Franklin founded the first anti-slavery society on this continent. And don’t get me wrong the joke did make me chuckle but my laughter is more towards them for being historically uneducated because if you understand history then the contents of the joke literally make no sense and makes them look hilarious it’s a pity that joke wasn’t centered around Andrew Jackson because then it would make perfect sense and be genuinely hilarious considering that Jackson was one of the biggest slave holders in history
@nathanielstein89044 жыл бұрын
I know its been 2 years but I still gotta point out that Franklin, despite his abolitionist actions, did still own people. Just because he did some work against it doesn't excuse that fact that he had slaves. I don't see how this makes them look uneducated.
