@@wtmayhew "…elegant without affectation…" is a great way to describe the Lucid. It has an elegance that is lacking from many other EVs, while at the same time, not being pretentious. I had a Lucid Air Pure on order for close to two years, but when Hyundai released the Ioniq 6 SE RWD, I jumped ship and bought the Ioniq. I do not regret buying the Ioniq as it is a car that reliably delivers what it is expected to do : long road trips in comfort with incredibly fast charging and excellent efficiency. To boot, it cost just a bit over 1/2 what the Lucid would have cost after Hyundai’s incentives on the car. I do, however, still want a Lucid. I like the term he uses in speaking about the "benevolent cycle of efficiency" as a philosophy they use in their design. If wish more manufacturers would think about efficiency, as opposed to dropping in bigger packs to achieve their range targets. I find the Aptera interesting from that perspective since they, similar to Lucid, focus considerable time and energy to aero as Lucid has.

The Citroën DS had a concave belly pan to create suction that increased with speed. Consequently its weight INCREASED with speed. The slightly flat front license plate section created an air-dam that then caused a suction into the horizontal radiator air intake immediately which are flanked by air intake ducts for the front inboard disk brakes. Come on Munro go analyze the DS and imagine it now being electric! These are not new tricks! The most creative thing I see is the duct for cooling the LED headlights. No light does not produce heat contrary to much discussion. It a matter of cooling the heat sink rather than the filament. Nice to see this attention to detail. Pure Irony: the example cited of saving electricity by turning off the lights at home on departure vs power consumed by an EV is laughable, because the displayed roof racks, and items strapped to them, totally negate all the meticulous details of Drag reduction in the design of the car. To be fair the roof rack is an accessory for occasional use when you have to use the car like a van or truck. The lower noise with a low cda may be more important than fuel saving. I can't explain why, but I find their design elegant and beautiful, but incredibly boring at the same time. And the impressive engineering that goes into the "incredible efficiency" at the expense of production efficiency is a disappointment. It's like throwing away dollars to save pennies. And the world can't benefit all that much from this efficiency when you can only produce and sell 600 of these a month. Tesla may not be quite as efficient, but they've replaced over 5 million ICE vehicles. Lucid only tens of thousands.

@4literv6Ай бұрын
The Saudis or Chinese of course. Lucid has burned up over $15,000,000,000 so far for less than 40k cars. And rivian has torched over $21,000,000,000 for less than 110,000 units so far sold.

Because this video is so aero oriented can someone discuss a comment that was made on the State of Charge channel TM stated that with an identical headwind and tailwind the tailwind wouldn’t have as much effect. It seems with most cars the cda would be much higher from the back than the front and be the opposite of what was stated. It was a 70 mph range test round trip.
@Miata822Ай бұрын
Tom Moloughney just discussed and demonstrated the opposite. I think you misunderstood him. He said it would equal out due to travelling the same distance in each direction, but ultimately have a negative impact.
@4rwayner7Ай бұрын
@@Miata822 No. At approximately the 35 minute point of the video he specifically states that you won’t get back the same efficiency effect with the tailwind as lost with the headwind. That’s why I asked. I wanted an aero/engineering comment and not a fan rebuttal. I am a fan of Tom’s but he occasionally makes off-the-cuff comments not based on engineering or technical knowledge. I watched a second time to be sure what he said and get the time stamp.
@jghall00Ай бұрын
He said an equivalent tailwind won't show up in energy consumption as an equal headwind. His trips are both directions, so any benefit from tailwind is partially offset by headwind but it's not a one to one impact, so the efficiency observed was real and not the result of beneficial wind direction.

So, if it so efficient, how much does the range decrease with a horse box or a caravan? Does it become a third?
@jghall00Ай бұрын
Depends on the shape and frontal area. I lose half my mpg with my travel trailer. Same with an EV, it's just physics of overcoming aero drag.

Amazing interview !!! Love what Lucid is doing. Unfortunately, they went high-end and didn't make a more affordable version. If they would've have built a version in $50k to $60k range and sold a bunch to get started, then come out with a luxury version. But at $160k, the average family isn't able to afford that. I hope they survive, but they need to pivot with a more affordable version.

I took the trouble to read all the comments, I see a lot of hate from Tesla users. However, I take this as a documentary, a historical record. Think in these years how many attempts were made, how many promises were not fulfilled and vanished. From an engineering point of view it is a tremendous achievement that the model is available to the public. However, remembering the words of an Italian engineer quoting Ferruccio Lamborghini about Bugatti that "it takes an industrialist" and that Elon learned that the hard way, I remember that he wished him the best success because he knows how difficult it is to make everything profitable an operation. I hope they can survive and continue their path of innovation with a different vision than Tesla, that feeds back to both.
@Miata822Ай бұрын
Elon wasn't from the car or manufacturing world. Rawlinson has spent his entire career running automotive engineering departments from Jaguar to Lotus to Tesla. Lucid won't need the ten years it took Tesla to get rolling.
