Earlier this year I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 37. I burst into tears the moment I was told, not because I was upset that I had it, but suddenly it all made sense. It brought me a feeling of comfort and quite honestly, it helped me to 'go easy' on myself. I felt seen in a way I'd never experienced before. I don't let it define me, I let it guide me.

Thank you for keeping your explanation about labeling so personal to your situation but still allowing people with all kind of brains to understand the significance of the terms and how everyone is free to apply them to their own situations. So refreshing. I’m a mom of 2 autistic kids (and still figuring out my own brain in the process) and I always tell my kids that the way their brain works might be different from the norm but they’re still also just themselves and the ‘label’ can be an explanation for behavior and feelings but not an excuse. You make your own story in the world regardless and own up to it!

Hey Steven, I hope the start to your year has been good. I have been watching DOAC and subscribed for some time. You mentioned that you put the success down to "the systems, the process, and the technology." These may aid your analysis and promotion, but 100% is not why we follow. It is your manner of interviewing, sincere interest, and pressing for truth and meaning - getting people to be honest and vulnerable by making them feel safe and heard. It is asking questions on behalf of your audience and getting interesting guests. I can not recall all the names, but some interviews have had a huge impact on my life - Mo, the comfort crisis, food as medicine (I hope I can come back to edit this). Steven, you can not underestimate the role you play in having people follow DOAC. Absolutely key! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I think labels are useful if you think of it as a way to index and find information. Having a diagnosis allows you to search for and find tools, resources and communities. Upon realising I have adhd I was able to find tools that have made my life significantly more manageable and most importantly stop feeling shame about things I thought I should be able to control but couldn’t. I also realised those I thought of as kindred spirits actually had adhd too 😂
@agneswatson959211 ай бұрын
Love that you say you're just Steven, as it should be. Unfortunately many people use their diagnosis as an excuse for whatever behaviours they show.. Takes away from people genuinely struggling and doing the best they can. Personally I'm tired of all these labels and just wish people would understand we all have different strengths and weaknesses.

That’s great, but actually people judge other all of the time. Isn’t that what you’ve just done? We are expect to fit the mould. Goodness me, that’s what schools are all about, teaching to the Bell curve! And if you don’t fit the curve, you’re screwed, and made to feel a failure!

@agneswatson9592 Adhd brains are naturally lacking in dopamine and drive behaviours that result in dopamine production. So...anything that results in dopamine production can be addictive to a person with adhd. These habits can be healthy or unhealthy. This is how it was explained to me and how i cognitively manage it, and it seems to work fine 👍
@ErgysUra6 ай бұрын
@@agneswatson9592 Playing competitive games 12 hours a day non-stop thus spiralling out of control. Doom scrolling when taking a break or at the toilet. Smoking cigarettes for over a decade. Feeling "normal" when drinking thus messing up sleep too. Then you get to weed, speed and the ride never ends because you are always looking to feel "normal", and then you need to take large amount of something to feel "high". It's a disaster that defintely needs a label. It's basically like having to rev up the engine of a car in order to drive normally. Which eventually, leads to a burn-out.

Steven, I just wanted to say how valuable these behind-the-diary episodes are. I have been watching the main channel for a long time and you are my most watched subscription. What you do on the main channel and the guests you have are always amazing. The new Behind the diary episodes are just plain inspirational. My wife and I have a small business and a youtube channel and I have just so many questions. I am picking up some from watching. sometimes I quickly open a new tab to look up something you mention, other times, it all makes sense an episode or two down the road . We are artists so technology and what is possible are not the easiest or obvious things to master but I do try hard and my editing gets better by that 1% all the time and I am trying. I watched the timelines Anthony showed at 17:52 in his breakdown of how the story is king and the one percent and well, Just shit man, I have a long way to go and these behind the diary episodes are a huge shot in the arm to just do more. Thank you Steve and thank you Anthony.

I had my brain scanned and rigorous testing (8hrs straight) = confirmed my different brain style + a life lived long with ADHD. I work to help de-stigmatize perception and bring more normalcy to being neuro. That which makes us each different in our own way is what makes us the best version of our inimitable selves. Welcome to the table, we saved you a seat! ADHD allows me to have incredible focus, creativity and drive. Knowing is key so that you can gain a better understanding and finesse your needs. And---for those who push for you to bring on "more CEOs" for DOAC, I would beg of you to keep on keeping with what you're doing. Your episodes have influenced my life in the most positive ways---and as CEO, of my life---that's what I need to start with and get right the most. Thank you!

I love your perspective on labels and neurodivergence. Over the last few years I have been diagnosed autistic and ADHD, and it is so useful to understand why I am the way I am, but the fear of letting the label define me is real. My labels are helpful (as opposed to preiously used labels like "difficult") but they alone should not define me. My eldest is waiting to be assessed for both autism and adhd and I worry for his mindset being defined by labels too - he's already ruled by anxiety in ways that I can’t seem to help him overcome. I will definitely be explaining it to him in the way you have done - he is him, pure and simple. I don't want anything holding him back in life like it did for me at times.

My husband and was diagnosed adhd as an adult, my son with autism at 3. I have characteristics of both. While I don’t think labelling is always good, I personally found the knowledge I learned so useful. It actually helped me to achieve more. Before I realised I probably was neurodivergent - I didn’t exercise. After I found out, I ran several marathons and started my own business which completely changed our lives. Knowledge can be power when it comes to this. It makes you understand some of those things you find difficult and they stop holding you back xx

I think this episode will have a great benefit for the ADHD community especially in the UK as obviously with our healthcare funding, brain scans aren't the norm and so the majority of people think ADHD is like a personality /mental health disorder with a cause, effect and a cure but to see your sleepy cerebellum and compare it to your achievements just shows that working with your strengths and having alternatives there for your weaknesses (tools/people) the goals you want to achieve can be reached. A big problem we have is comparision and measuring ourselves against the norm....this is where getting the label does help....all of a sudden we aren't dangling on the edge of the bell curve but are on a completely different chart (more like a scatter graph!).
@thatswhatisaidCA11 ай бұрын
This was interesting, fun to watch, thank you! Also, the LABEL (adhd) is just for doctors to give you the "right" drugs/treatment, just like medical issues, as they are all tied to the "right drug" choices given. Steven, you've got an important platform to frame what ADHD means to people, but more specifically, high-performing individuals. To me, having lived this way for 50 years, seeing family born and grow up with it, having studied neuroscience, it's only another variation of who we are, like foot size or skin colour. It becomes a condition or a disorder if it creates problems - that's when we pathologize it - otherwise it's just a way of thinking. Used to your advantage, it's a valuable asset. Like the F-16 is designed for inherent instability so it can perform feats other jets can't, a brain that's wired differently can do things others can't. The most important things I've learned are to work with (and not against) the flow, and to put in place structure and develop habits to direct that flow. Doesn't meant life's not a struggle, and particularly if you grew up in a highly critical or emotional traumatic or destitute environment your abilities may be forever limited (you might cut it as an entrepreneur, but not a CEO). You've got a really important story to tell here about a certain group of people who think this way, and I hope you can keep refining it.

I was diagnosed at 32 as a highly successful tech sales executive and entrepreneur. It helped me to explain why I always felt different. It also explained why I was a terrible student in formal education. I am an EXCELLENT student of life and things that interest me. I can become an expert easily. It's a superpower. Many ADHDers don't get this because the label hindered them, unfortunately. And it is those that don't have ADHD that tell us that different is bad. Einstein doesn't agree. Cheers! I love Steve’s view on the ADHD, I mean, it is important to know yourself, and maybe finding out a label that helps you move forward and learn about yourself is good but it’s equally good not to base your whole self identity around that label. It’s important to find a balance for between those two. I personally would love to get my brain scanned too, and I probably would find out I have ADHD too.

I love listening to and talking to experts, it saves me time reading what they have! 😂 Being diagnosed with autism and ADHD in my late 40s has totally explained why I behaved like I did in my childhood (eg getting my parents barred from social clubs for swinging on curtains!) and why I picked the jobs and partners I did throughout my life. I think labels can be beneficial as long as you keep it as just that, a label of what “might” apply to you in what I like to call the spectrum of the tree branches of behaviours. I’m now a psych/neuro final year undergrad (a second time) at 50! Completely the opposite of what I do!?🙏💙

By the time I was in grade 2, teachers labelled me with A.D.D (ADHD has it's known now). I could never stay still and focus on the school work. Going through the school system and finishing college, having ADHD, though not professionally diagnosed, was just me. It wasn't until I "played in the devil's playground" with drugs and alcohol, a suicide attempt, and being admitted into a psych ward did I found out, yes, I have ADHD, but also bipolar 1 disorder. After that time, those labels really became a part of me. But, I've been learning over the last two years that these labels don't DEFINE me. All these bts episodes have been phenomenal, but this one felt reassuring. Like Steven said, he's just Steven. And I'm just Adriana and I like that ❤

It's very interesting this thing of labels. I always say that words have done something strange in society, they name what in nature is nature u know. Always cool to learn something on the vlog. Also just so cool to watch someone 's life in business for us who are obsessed with business. So big up Team

I remember doing that test during my ADHD/autism assessment and I am both (ADHD and autistic) 😂 I wonder if my brain scan would be similar to yours.

I'd be interested to hear if you followed up on the mold testing

My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD this summer, I have found that a lot of the school concerns that they have for my daughter were the same for me at her age! I'm 46 and trying to get a diagnosis of ADHD. ADHD would explain a lot of things that I have noticed for years but didn't know that it may be ADHD

Hey Steven I recently purchased a copy of The Diary of a CEO. I am a trainer and would love to workshop the principles outlined in your book to our staff at work. Do you perhaps have an accompanying workbook?

That was so interesting about mold, i just had to leave a workplace because of it and i think it affected my brain.

Makes sense to me. Entrepreneurs are more likely to be neurodiversity. I am what you call a stealth dyslexic and also twice exceptional. Career choice and way to thinking will demonstrate in their personality. I feel I might have also ADD as I have hyper focus moments and moments with no focus.

Steven!! know your team reads the comments… I’d love to see the captions edited for future episodes. I work in KZbin so these things stand out to me 🥰 (I announced you to the stage last year, it was my MC career highlight!)

I’m not surprised you have ADHD. It surprises me that you are surprised. It’s all in what you do. I’m mother of 3 and 2 are ADHD. It’s not a terrible thing to have but once you know you can arrange your life to suit.
