Earlier this year I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 37. I burst into tears the moment I was told, not because I was upset that I had it, but suddenly it all made sense. It brought me a feeling of comfort and quite honestly, it helped me to 'go easy' on myself. I felt seen in a way I'd never experienced before. I don't let it define me, I let it guide me.

Another true 10/10 episode. As a videographer and editor, I can spot cool nuggets added to each episode to make them better and better (and note how much extra work those types of things are). As a request, I'd personally love an overview of gear used for DOAC (cameras, lenses, lights, audio interface, etc.). Already looking forward to next week's episode!

I think labels are useful if you think of it as a way to index and find information. Having a diagnosis allows you to search for and find tools, resources and communities. Upon realising I have adhd I was able to find tools that have made my life significantly more manageable and most importantly stop feeling shame about things I thought I should be able to control but couldn’t. I also realised those I thought of as kindred spirits actually had adhd too 😂

Love that you say you're just Steven, as it should be. Unfortunately many people use their diagnosis as an excuse for whatever behaviours they show.. Takes away from people genuinely struggling and doing the best they can. Personally I'm tired of all these labels and just wish people would understand we all have different strengths and weaknesses.
@carl-mumford
@carl-mumford 4 ай бұрын
How are you meant to know what you're working with unless you understand the condition you have? Try having an addiction caused by ADHD and then just calling it a weakness. It's not about a label, it's about understanding. You wouldn't tell someone with cancer to stop wanting a label would you?

That’s great, but actually people judge other all of the time. Isn’t that what you’ve just done? We are expect to fit the mould. Goodness me, that’s what schools are all about, teaching to the Bell curve! And if you don’t fit the curve, you’re screwed, and made to feel a failure!

@agneswatson9592 ADHD is a deficit in the functionality of the uptake of dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain. ADHD brains crave stimulation due to a lack of the correct chemical activity. This leads to issues like addiction, as individuals with ADHD seek stimulation not by choice but due to the chemical activity taking place in the brain. People don't want labels; they want understanding of why they keep repeating the same behaviors. I was 33 when I was diagnosed, and it has since changed my life. With understanding, the correct support, and treatment, I can control destructive behaviours. These behaviours are more than just strengths and weaknesses, as you referred to them. Unsupported ADHD nearly caused me to take my own life, but with understanding, I am now here trying to help others comprehend it. Out of 85,000 prisons, 55,000 have been excluded for "persistent disruptive behaviour," closely linked with ADHD. About 25% of the prison population has ADHD, and that's a conservative estimate. What drives crime? Addiction, impulsivity, poor emotional regulation-symptoms of ADHD that can be so destructive. One in three people in prison has a learning disability. It's not a choice, and it's not an excuse for behaviour.
@_allybee

@agneswatson9592 Adhd brains are naturally lacking in dopamine and drive behaviours that result in dopamine production. So...anything that results in dopamine production can be addictive to a person with adhd. These habits can be healthy or unhealthy. This is how it was explained to me and how i cognitively manage it, and it seems to work fine 👍

Hey Steven, I hope the start to your year has been good. I have been watching DOAC and subscribed for some time. You mentioned that you put the success down to "the systems, the process, and the technology." These may aid your analysis and promotion, but 100% is not why we follow. It is your manner of interviewing, sincere interest, and pressing for truth and meaning - getting people to be honest and vulnerable by making them feel safe and heard. It is asking questions on behalf of your audience and getting interesting guests. I can not recall all the names, but some interviews have had a huge impact on my life - Mo, the comfort crisis, food as medicine (I hope I can come back to edit this). Steven, you can not underestimate the role you play in having people follow DOAC. Absolutely key! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Steven, I just wanted to say how valuable these behind-the-diary episodes are. I have been watching the main channel for a long time and you are my most watched subscription. What you do on the main channel and the guests you have are always amazing. The new Behind the diary episodes are just plain inspirational. My wife and I have a small business and a youtube channel and I have just so many questions. I am picking up some from watching. sometimes I quickly open a new tab to look up something you mention, other times, it all makes sense an episode or two down the road . We are artists so technology and what is possible are not the easiest or obvious things to master but I do try hard and my editing gets better by that 1% all the time and I am trying. I watched the timelines Anthony showed at 17:52 in his breakdown of how the story is king and the one percent and well, Just shit man, I have a long way to go and these behind the diary episodes are a huge shot in the arm to just do more. Thank you Steve and thank you Anthony.

So thanks for making that upgrade! 2. Best vlog so far, not necessarily because of the value, or because of what you were doing, but mainly because the editing is getting soooooo gooooood! But I feel like now you are showing more of your personality, and your cheeky little jokes, it makes it more fun! I personally like it 4. The ads, 😫 ooh, the ads! I hate them. I love Steve’s view on the ADHD, I mean, it is important to know yourself, and maybe finding out a label that helps you move forward and learn about yourself is good but it’s equally good not to base your whole self identity around that label. It’s important to find a balance for between those two. I personally would love to get my brain scanned too, and I probably would find out I have ADHD too.

Thank you for keeping your explanation about labeling so personal to your situation but still allowing people with all kind of brains to understand the significance of the terms and how everyone is free to apply them to their own situations. So refreshing. I’m a mom of 2 autistic kids (and still figuring out my own brain in the process) and I always tell my kids that the way their brain works might be different from the norm but they’re still also just themselves and the ‘label’ can be an explanation for behavior and feelings but not an excuse. You make your own story in the world regardless and own up to it!

What's truly important isn't our weaknesses but how we overcome them and shine despite them. Just as stars always shine brightest in the dark, we, as humans, reveal our strength and character through challenges and experiences. Regardless of our shortcomings, our humanity shines through our efforts to improve and care for others. This resilience and compassion define us, making us heroes in our own right, and that's what truly matters. Big love for Steve and all of the team! Aklog, from East Africa, Ethiopia.

I had my brain scanned and rigorous testing (8hrs straight) = confirmed my different brain style + a life lived long with ADHD. I work to help de-stigmatize perception and bring more normalcy to being neuro. That which makes us each different in our own way is what makes us the best version of our inimitable selves. Welcome to the table, we saved you a seat! ADHD allows me to have incredible focus, creativity and drive. Knowing is key so that you can gain a better understanding and finesse your needs. And---for those who push for you to bring on "more CEOs" for DOAC, I would beg of you to keep on keeping with what you're doing. I love your perspective on labels and neurodivergence. Over the last few years I have been diagnosed autistic and ADHD, and it is so useful to understand why I am the way I am, but the fear of letting the label define me is real. My labels are helpful (as opposed to preiously used labels like "difficult") but they alone should not define me. My eldest is waiting to be assessed for both autism and adhd and I worry for his mindset being defined by labels too - he's already ruled by anxiety in ways that I can’t seem to help him overcome. I will definitely be explaining it to him in the way you have done - he is him, pure and simple. I don't want anything holding him back in life like it did for me at times.

I think this episode will have a great benefit for the ADHD community especially in the UK as obviously with our healthcare funding, brain scans aren't the norm and so the majority of people think ADHD is like a personality /mental health disorder with a cause, effect and a cure but to see your sleepy cerebellum and compare it to your achievements just shows that working with your strengths and having alternatives there for your weaknesses (tools/people) the goals you want to achieve can be reached. A big problem we have is comparision and measuring ourselves against the norm....this is where getting the label does help....all of a sudden we aren't dangling on the edge of the bell curve but are on a completely different chart (more like a scatter graph!).

Birds of a feather… I knew before he said I could tell a mile away. Why? I don’t watch tv. I read and research. I have the same infinite curiosity! I love listening to and talking to experts, it saves me time reading what they have! 😂 Being diagnosed with autism and ADHD in my late 40s has totally explained why I behaved like I did in my childhood (eg getting my parents barred from social clubs for swinging on curtains!) and why I picked the jobs and partners I did throughout my life. I think labels can be beneficial as long as you keep it as just that, a label of what “might” apply to you in what I like to call the spectrum of the tree branches of behaviours. I’m now a psych/neuro final year undergrad (a second time) at 50! Completely the opposite of what I do!?🙏💙

Steven, you've got an important platform to frame what ADHD means to people, but more specifically, high-performing individuals. To me, having lived this way for 50 years, seeing family born and grow up with it, having studied neuroscience, it's only another variation of who we are, like foot size or skin colour. It becomes a condition or a disorder if it creates problems - that's when we pathologize it - otherwise it's just a way of thinking. Used to your advantage, it's a valuable asset. Like the F-16 is designed for inherent instability so it can perform feats other jets can't, a brain that's wired differently can do things others can't. The most important things I've learned are to work with (and not against) the flow, and to put in place structure and develop habits to direct that flow. Doesn't meant life's not a struggle, and particularly if you grew up in a highly critical or emotional traumatic or destitute environment your abilities may be forever limited (you might cut it as an entrepreneur, but not a CEO). You've got a really important story to tell here about a certain group of people who think this way, and I hope you can keep refining it.

Does Steven ever sleep, always on the go😅! My only critique in this ep would be the text message overlays at the beginning were a little too fast to read, but otherwise great insights into the brain scans! Glad you made your flight!

Yay! First to comment. 🎉 DOAC Vlog is my fix to start my working week positively😊. Not a fan of Jade. As for the brain scan, amazing what they can do but, YOU are so right about "labelling". I LOVE your take on that. Just stay the amazing Steve that you are. I'm going to re-watch and eyeball what else you had in your schedule. It àlways looks so gruelling! Your team do an excellent job 👏 👏 👌🙌. Thanxx, see you here next week 😘

Sometimes an official 'label' can help to assuage a less informed, but more damaging, socially critical judgement. I've been looking into ADHD recently as i'm starting to wonder... but i'm interested to learn more from a trauma perspective. It's interesting to observe the medical pathway against a therapeutic one. Thanks for a great episode!

I have hypothesized for some time that EDS is how we are really different....the neurodivergence is how it shows up in the brain. My nurse side geeks out on the tangible measures for the brain. We have ignored her for so so long, this is epically exciting!!

Brave of you to go through your process publicly. I was diagnosed as an adult last year and I know what you mean about self-worth. I struggled with the label and can never identify with 'is a superpower' messaging, the whole shebang was like wearing an ill-fitting jacket. Looks like you figured out the game pretty well I'd say. Fascinating snippets of DOAC here. I am beginning to see why some peeps are so scared of AI 😂 Sending virtual hug and high five. It does take some getting used to even if you don't label it.

Will there be fuller episodes relating to the neurodivergent topic? I think this is a huge topic that isn't being talked about enough to begin with. But also isn't being talked about enough from different angles. You have a unique opportunity here to unearth some very powerful stuff for a community that has been given very conflicting information for decades and beyond.

By the time I was in grade 2, teachers labelled me with A.D.D (ADHD has it's known now). I could never stay still and focus on the school work. Going through the school system and finishing college, having ADHD, though not professionally diagnosed, was just me. It wasn't until I "played in the devil's playground" with drugs and alcohol, a suicide attempt, and being admitted into a psych ward did I found out, yes, I have ADHD, but also bipolar 1 disorder. After that time, those labels really became a part of me. But, I've been learning over the last two years that these labels don't DEFINE me. All these bts episodes have been phenomenal, but this one felt reassuring. Like Steven said, he's just Steven. And I'm just Adriana and I like that ❤

It's very interesting this thing of labels. I always say that words have done something strange in society, they name what in nature is nature u know. Always cool to learn something on the vlog. Also just so cool to watch someone 's life in business for us who are obsessed with business. So big up Team

These Men who have adhd are intelligent people. They could not sit in classrooms for 8 plus hours to learn. They learn at their own speeds. This label should not hold anyone back. This is a brain that is active that needs room to grow and learn not in a box/classroom but out in the world.

My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD this summer, I have found that a lot of the school concerns that they have for my daughter were the same for me at her age! I'm 46 and trying to get a diagnosis of ADHD. ADHD would explain a lot of things that I have noticed for years but didn't know that it may be ADHD

I, too, dislike labeling. As you mentioned, we are shaped not only by the good but also by the bad and ugly aspects of ourselves. I don't think I'll ever undergo a brain scan. I love the behind-the-scenes stories of Jada's interview. I'm eager to watch the Morgan Hounsell episode. I've started listening to "It's Plenty" by Burna Boy & love it. I hope you'll share about your music preferences in future episodes.

fantastic episode again, loving that consistent theme of bringing your story together. I have said it on every video but your marvel-style storytelling really sets this apart, bringing the Jada episode to life, having touched on it in a couple of your older videos just keeps the thread going and really allows me as a viewer to see the progression. The analyst in me would always love to go deeper and deeper into some of the bits you raise, especially around your A/B testing, thumbnails etc. how are you doing that, what metrics are you capturing, how are you capturing those and what does success look like to allow you to settle on a final decision but i guess that is what makes up the secret sauce. Finally, it was GREAT seeing Steven before doing that test, we rarely see that playful side, which is clearly there but rarely in the vlog, the less serious side where he does just make fun of himself, great to see! 10,000 minutes until the next episode drops, already can't wait! Great work, your whole team are an incredibly well oiled machine!

Makes sense to me. Entrepreneurs are more likely to be neurodiversity. I am what you call a stealth dyslexic and also twice exceptional. Career choice and way to thinking will demonstrate in their personality. I feel I might have also ADD as I have hyper focus moments and moments with no focus.
