Here's a little detail that didn't get commented on: Not only did she hit a little boy hard enough to draw blood, she did it because he told her he was going to be a ring bearer at the wedding! There's no excuse for hitting a child ever, but she also flew off the handle over a wedding detail! And a wedding detail that should not have been even slightly distressing. Just imagine Luke sharing something he was excited about, only to have stepmonster react with anger and violence. Even an adult would not have seen that coming, but for a 4 year old, it must have been frightening.

The dad is clearly thinking with his other head. No sane adult would condone beating a literal child, especially when said kid did nothing wrong. How an adult can justify a 4-year-old being hit so hard by an adult that it splits their lip is beyond me. Dad is a weak man who only thinks between his legs, so long as his affair partner turned wife is around, everyone else can perish. As a child of physical abuse, I have the answer. Anger and control issues. My mother had both and I had the bruises to prove it. My biomom would fight to the death if someone hit me. She had zero problem though with her hitting me. She would brag about it. No one would help though. They all knew and they did nothing to help. Sure I lashed out when my father died. He was they one that had an easy time keeping us kids in check. A look or a word. We never feared him and he never hit us. But when I was in pain from losing him and I was acting out, she got angry and hit us. To protect my siblings, I took all the blame so they would not get hit. She was mad that I could not be controlled at times.

I had to do this with my niece's school about her own mother. My niece and nephews got put in my care after being removed from my sister by dhs, and it was heartbreaking to have to hand over documentation and telling them my sister could not contact, show up, receive information about, or remove my niece from school. Had to tell them if my sister tried any of that, then they were to immediately call the cops and call me directly after. Now the older two (niece and oldest nephew) are with their father and the youngest is still with me. My sister keeps trying to convince us to let her move in with us, and that is a hard no because I'm fostering her child and legally can't. Even if I could, I wouldn't let her move in with me. I did it once and had to end up kicking her out

This is definitely a scorched earth situation. “She only hit him once”?! Yeah, and that’s one time too many! I used to be physically abused by a family member as a child. My kids have never been left alone with that person, and I have gone NC. Other family members were still in contact though, and believed the sob story that they’d changed/it would never happen again/I made them do it…until that person hit another family member’s child, decades after they’d done it to me. They never learned to “control their temper,” they never “got better.” Leopards don’t change their spots, they just get better at hiding.

I have zero tolerance for people that abuse children, the vulnerable, and the elderly. Being 6'7" 265 lbs of very ripped muscles, I have found my best weapon against "bad people" is my ability to intimidate and physically harm them. I wouldn't care if she is a woman or not, I would have beaten her within an inch of her life and trashed-talked her the entire time. My goal wouldn't have been to just physically injure her but to mentally injure her as well during it. Does that make me a bad person??? LOL Hell ya it does, but I can live with that especially if it wrecks her life to the point she is never able to harm another child. Good for OP for not knuckling under to evil step-mom's intrusiveness and dad's pressure. It is terrible that OP's father would condone this abuse by his wife. I am so glad charges were pressed and I hope she has to spend time in jail. After update: Good for banning the abusers and enablers. I think OP is a lot better natured than I would be to even consider forgiving any of these people at any point. I'm glad Luke is doing better. After next update: Glad the court case is done, and glad there is a protection order. This father is demented and disgusting. OMG, he is absolutely despicable to think the way he does and continue to be an apologist for his vile wife.

A lot of older people believe that "spare the rod and spoil the child", or believe in physical punishment. Sad but true. They literally can't comprehend that it isn't a good idea and is actually causing trauma. That is likely the basis of the "she just hit him once" comment. And why the older family members still support her for doing it.

I wasn't expecting the story to get that serious by the title. I wonder if the step-brother was abused. Usually a person in her 50s (?) doesn't just start abusing children, that might explain his strange responsible. He may be processing what happened to him.

The fact that step bro is having trouble believing his mom would hit a child makes me think she probably never *physically* abused him, at least. If she had, I think step bro would instead defend her with whatever kind of "you deserved it" rationalizations she'd used on him growing up. Emotional abuse, though, I could totally believe, given how controlling she is.

I'm proud of OP for moving on and cutting contact with both the stepmom and his father. Not only was she a horrible person but the father was just as toxic for standing by and letting her hurt that child. But honestly the real MVP in all of this for me is OP's wife for showing so much restraint after finding out stepmom hit Luke because if it was me everybody in that household would have to hold me back from knocking her head off her shoulders!!! “She only hit him once” proves she’ll do it again. Once is all it should take. I recall this exchange from another story a while ago: (Parent): what will it take for us to have a relationship again? (Adult child): stepparent dies, or you get a divorce. And that should be the best-case scenario here as well, with that contingent on dad showing genuine remorse along with some good old-fashioned grovelling. Damn, what some are willing to tolerate from a partner just to get laid.

I think OP's dad does see what his wife did was wrong, but she obviously has his balls in her purse, so what he repeating to OP sounds more like points that his stepmother has made. She wants her husband to fix this because without being her husband's kids "mother" she feels she has no skin in the game of this family. She has obviously tried to out do OP and his sister mother and with them not having anything to do with her she is losing her mind.

Man(doesn’t even fit to be called a dad), and step-bitch, had been enabled for so long all because to keep the fucking peace. It doesn’t keep peace, it only fuels the fire for them to attack. I’m glad OP and his wife got them both banned, and listed as a child abuser. That’ll be interesting to read on a job application. I find it interesting that OPs stepbrother refuses to see his mom for who she is but OP himself seems to insist his dad is a good guy, just too influenced or under his wife's control. That is a lame excuse also. Both OP and stepbrother don't want to see their birth parent as the POS they are. OPs dad has clearly shown what a lousy person he is. He puts out the nice guy thing to many who like him very much, but he stood by and watched his insane wife take out her anger on a 4 yo and smack him hard enough to make him bleed. Then stand up for her actions and go as far as refusing to attend the wedding if she can't. Then allowing family members to hear a completely different take on the situation, not mentioning the assault, so that his son would be seen as the villain instead of his wife. Clearly he is equally the POS she is!!! Why the multiple "normally he's a good guy" excuses from OP? Step brother also thinks nothing is wrong with his mom's actions because he won't deal with the fact she is awful. No one that defends them has any amount of compassion for a 4 yo boy that was made an orphan and luckily has a half sister willing to take him on. That is so sad. How can any adult not have their heart go out to a boy that almost lost everything? OPs dad knows damn well he married a loon that treated his children like her audience, her pet projects, her excuse to get more attention for her fake graciousness. Yet he allowed his two children to deal with her while he plays the good guy. I don't know why OP thinks his dad will "come around." Come around from what? Being a poor excuse of a man, father and grandfather?

Hitting Luke, Jane's 4 year old brother once was once too many times for me. For starters, stepmother isn't related to OP or his family. She's just OPs dad's wife. Luke is OPs "son" and brother in law at the same time. I would have been furious about the fact that this woman had the gall to hit a 4 year old child in the face and split his lip like that. OPs dad was the babysitter for his children and by allowing stepmother being with him, he basically allowed her to slap a child. I hope that OPs dad realizes that because of this woman, he's going to lose pretty much his access to his children's lives and his future grandchildren lives. He will be on his deathbed before he realizes what a really bad mistake he did by marrying that woman. She's a "see you next Tuesday".
