2:46 the big chewers Scotty get the clear plastic grids. Kavee has them on their site. And yes, you can’t hang things from them, but you can drill a hole in them to make them much more usable to hang water bottles ext. They are made out of some sort of plastic.

I have had several boy piggies that were bar chewers. I put plexiglass panels in the front of the pens. Clear ones, so they could see out, but not chew on anything and hurt themselves. Acrylic panels might be cheaper. Note: I bought some acrylic panels on Amazon, but when they arrived they were translucent and the boys could not see out of them. Didn't use them!

Oh no, poor Volo! Maybe because of malnutrition! It also happens in humans. I am so glad he is gaining weight. We had to put acrilic panels in thr front ti stop them from chewing. 💕
@Fredamedia4 күн бұрын
I use acryllic sheet with holes punched in the corners to use reusable cable ties to attach them to the bars. The 15cm high ones were just high up enough for the ends to be out of chewing reach. I overlapped the ends to prevent them from being chewed. I have horizontal and square bars, but my piggies can bite both kinds. Good luck with the anti bar biting measures ❤

We have 12 piggies. Most of them will chew on the grids when they are waiting for food, or telling me they want some. 2 of them though actually don't chew the grids, they use the water bottles which I find interesting. Thankfully none of them have broken their teeth so far.

Volo looked at the camera like how dare you talk about my butt! My late boy Wicket fell out of an old carrier and broke a tooth. It grew back. Gave Nini her 1st bath Sat. Head & Shoulders dry scalp with almond oil. Thought she would be a devil but Missa held onto the container and my fingers holding her head up. Softer and clean smelling BUT the water didn't get dirty. It did not stop her going at her chin. Somehow if I tell people I have agouti hair if they aren't Exotic folk I don't think they would get it. Merry Christmas to you and the crew from Nini and I.

My old boys would break their teeth every so often once they reached 6 years old. For mine, it was most likely genetic issues, no teething on the c&c grids. The acrylic panels sound like a good idea.

I have had several that had snapped teeth from biting bars, fights and a fall. Ernie had a broken tooth when I adopted him and the root was damage, sohe had to have it removed, I had to adjust how I fed him. I used to peel the carrots and other veg in thin slices like Spaghetti so it was easier for him to pick up.

Poor Volo, bless him, I'm sure his tooth will grow back soon. Wow, so happy he's put on weight! Out of my four piggies, Huey was the one that started chewing the grids at food time. I had the 2 girls for 2 years before I rescued my 2 boys. They never chewed the grids during that time, and neither did Leto for the first year of having the boys...until recently. Mattie and Leto seem to have started copying what Huey's doing. They are gentle, not as crazy as Huey, but they have started. I think they learn from each other. Also, I had the narrower C&C grids before I changed to the square shaped ones. Huey chewed those too so I don't think it makes any difference (but if you have some of those grids handy it's worth a try, to see what happens). I reckon the clear perspex sheets are probably the way to go. That's what I'm thinking I may do soon. We don't want any broken teeth here!

You could go look for grids with vertical bars only. Chewing them isn’t as fun as the horizontal ones, and air flow would still be good. All the best for Volo. He’s such a beautiful boy now.

My piggy broke his tooth numerous times, everytime it was on the grids. I changed to acrylic and my Guinea became very stressed because he couldn't rub noses with his side cage mate. My boys are in side by side c&c cages.

Since he was so emaciated, maybe he has some mineral or vitamin deficiency that weakens his teeth? Also, I think it's a good idea to use acrylic glass panels for those pigs who are especially excited before they get food.

Volo is looking great!! Broken teeth, I've been dealing with this issue for over 2 years now. I have a bad boy named Mustang, who taught his brother Maverick to chew on the bars and Maverick has had problems since. He broke both lower incisors, they grew back with no problem. Then he broke his left upper incisors and it grew back into his gums, causing an infection. Wound up have to have that tooth and root surgically removed, that cost me almost $700. I have to trim his teeth every 4-6 weeks for the rest of his life. Then Mustang taught my good boy, Toby to chew on the bars and he has broken both lower incisors and his right upper incisors. The lower incisors have grown back perfect, but the upper incisor is isn't growing back as fast as I expected it would, so I now trim Toby's teeth hoping they will grow in correctly. My vet said she thinks they will, but I'm waiting to see. I've been trying to come up with a way to fix the chewing and breaking teeth. I was thinking about some type of tubing to put on the bars, but finding something that isn't dangerous for piggies to chew on is where I'm stuck. I was thinking something like a clear tubing and possibly a diameter that was big enough so they can't get their teeth around it. I'm still researching to see if there is a tubing that would be safe for piggies if they were to chew on it. That's the best I've come up with so far, because broken teeth are not fun for the piggies and are expensive for me with the vet bills. Of course, Mustang teaches my other 4 piggies to chew on the bars, but he has never broken any of his teeth.

My female piggy broke her tooth the same. She was also born with only one tooth at the bottom. She seemed to eat plenty of hay but had an ulcer at the back where a pointed tooth aggravated it. Also she had fracture on the other side and eating was impossible except for Critical Care. Unfortunately we had her put to sleep as she was losing weight so fast. Her friend's teeth are perfect so no rhyme nor reason for it.

Awe, Volo! Volo's tooth could have been weakened from his nutrition issues. One way to help is hang natural enrichments in the front ,put the coroplast a little higher and yes, you could change the grids, but I found with Harriet who was my big grid,bar and coroplast chewer, that if I put enrichments, hanged the enrichment treat,chews and had coroplast higher, she stopped chewing the bars and coroplast. I also have my water bottles in front too. Volo is handsome and sweet and here his to a speedy growth of his new tooth!

All of us remember Volo! I've been waiting a long time to see an update on this gorgeous little guy, we saw just how much you helped him get so strong. Oh little guy, I really hope that his tooth grows back and helps him immensely. It's just like many animals, they are little chewers that need something, though I didn't realise it could ever cause such teeth issues!! Is it time to get a chew toy to place where he most often chews? This might have to be very thick layers of something safe to chew. Maybe not perfect, but this sort of solution is what us bunny people are used to. That, or add alot of forage. Hmm it's a very good question!!

A much smaller mesh attached to the grid 👍. What one of my piggies broke one of her top teeth and left a stump, so I clipped the other tooth level with the broken tooth, fed her on softened pellets for a few days and her teeth grew back very quickly and evenly.

Volo is so adorable! You could try a non-toxic chew stop liquid wiped on the front grids of the biggest offenders to see if it works although I am sure the clear C & C panels will work great ($$$). I currently have two female piggies (age 4 yrs and 1.5 yrs) and neither chew on their C&C grids. I am very consistent with feeding time. They know the drill. Fresh hay is ALWAYS available (Guinea Dad Hay Bar has been a favorite of theirs). They get fresh assorted veggies & herbs at 5:00 am ( any few of the following: romaine lettuce, kale, bell peppers (daily for vitamin C), cucumber, radicchio, parsnip, carrot piece, tomato piece, basil, dill, cilantro, thyme or rosemary. What ever I have on hand. Additionally they get one FRESH blueberry OR FRESH cherry for antioxidants. Sweet fruits are given in very strict limited quantity.. Occasionally (due to the high sugar) they get ONE wedge (or half wedge) of orange/mandarin, again for vitamin C. I may omit the blueberry depending on sweetness. In the fall, they occasionally enjoy a small pumpkin too. After our dinner, they get some guinea pig pellets, along with "sprinkles"........which is Small Pet Select assorted herbal blends/dried pepper/one healthy snacker each and one Oxbow Vitamin C each. They also each get two pea flakes before bed. Every day they are also talked to, petted, picked up and snuggled with as much as they want. They are super friendly, even with strangers. Their giant raised C & C "cage" is the center of attention in our great room/kitchen area. Only once did our first boar break a front tooth many years ago (it grew in fine) due to chewing on carrier metal door.

They’ll still chew the ones with the narrower slats. I’ve never been able to stop bar chewing. I’ve had multiple piggies break their teeth bar chewing and also a couple from jumping/falling. Never had an issue with them not growing back.

Hey Scotty, I think acrilic will help. Your guinea pigs are boys and it's complicated to give them free roam. I have 34 guinea pigs, but most of them are free roam. 17 girls live in my bedroom and the boys have their room as well. I have only 4 males guinea pigs living in cages, 13 boys are living together but that are free roam and I don't have any issues with them. You may want to buy acrilic but probably you may want to give yours boys more space, make bigger cages, because they bite cages for lack of space.

I’m not sure it’s the grids, personally, but I can understand the fear. My piggies have also always chewed the grids around salad time but none of them have ever broken a tooth. I’ve had at least 20 piggies, not as many as you by far, but it seems like a pretty good sample size. Someone mentioned malnutrition and I’d be interested to see info about increased predisposition to tooth issues because of past neglect.
@ScottysAnimals5 күн бұрын
There is no doubt that he was emaciated previously and it may very well be a factor, but I extremely doubt the teeth broke in his mouth without him chewing on the grid. And I have had pigs who were with me their entire lives break their teeth.

Hi, Volo! You look great! I'm so sorry about your teefies❤🩹 I'm thinking his tooth issues are probably because he was malnourished before you rescued him. It looks like they're already growing in pretty well. I've only ever had one piggy that had issues with only his incisors, and it was one that constantly chewed on the grids (this was way before I'd even heard of using acrylic panels.) I was never able to get him to stop and I tried everything I could think of (hanging wooden toys; trying to redirect him with treats; bitter apple spray.) He broke them several times, but they always grew back quickly. I'd just shred his carrots and soften his pellets or feed Critical Care until I was sure he could eat okay. I hope someone can help with a solution. Merry Pigmas!🎄🎁
