I don’t actually know if this distinction is helpful or true 🤔 It has a ring of hierarchy to it. „Fine“ art being somehow superior. If we look at art history MOST of what we consider art through all ages was commission work and it’s main purpose for the artist’s was to pay the bills 😅

Please continue making selfish art people. Dont ever stop. But also make art for people. You can follow trends and make things for people like a factory but remember to make sure you also do your own selfish art FOR people from time to time. You have no idea how much people recognize your style and your own work. Your visions and ideas can sell greatly. Dont let your store be a copy paste of what's popular. You will loose all your passion and burn out like a candle. But also research and knowing what the market wants is also important. It is a balance. Don't fall for extremes. But please for the love of all that is artsy, make, selfish art! Also stop calling is selfish, it is art for you and your enjoyment that others might love. You can post this on a separate account and see how people enjoy it. So while making something that will make you happy you can also share it with the world and get feedback

Pursuing a theoretical audience instead of your own unique vision is, imo, why so many movies are terrible these days. Generic. Derivative. Forgettable. It’s clear she is already tired of hammering out her little knickknacks, factory style, or she wouldn’t be saying “Obviously I’m not going to be doing this forever “ That’s what people say about a job they don’t like

"Believe you can do hard things" hit hard. I've had such a low self-esteem and low expectation for my abilities - literally just self-talk - for as long as I can remember, and I've been doubting about whether I can step up to the challenged of really starting an art business. "You will never feel ready" also hits hard. I've been "researching" and "finding my style" for. Ever. I need to just jump in! Thank you for sharing with us!

Real talk though, the expectation that your face is your brand these days is genuinely upsetting to me. I value my privacy. I do not enjoy being on camera. Does that mean I don’t deserve to have a successful business? Does that mean I’m not “connecting” with my customers? Not directed at you Tammy, just venting.
@chantalleonhardt3 ай бұрын
People attache things like a brand identity to something they see in every video/post and that is usually the person’s face. If you don’t want to share your face then you need to have a really strong art style/ business product and brand story associated, that people are going to recognise instantly in the first 3 seconds of the video. Hope that helps ❤

Ive seen a creator who uses a fabric draped in front of her face and her videos are mostly around clothing. She models the clothing and shows herself in a way, just without showing her face. The piece of fabric protecting her image is consistent in the videos so it's memorable to see the fabric and know its already her. Just a thought. Some people make videos with the priority of not showing their entire self the same way streamers that don't wanna be seen become recognizable for their voice instead and the way they play the game and so on. You can meet your desire to engage in privacy and separation of your face and you + your business.

Hi there! Totally understand, I wish I would’ve added this in the video too but you don’t HAVE to show your face if you don’t want to, even just doing voiceovers is a powerful tool to get people engaged in your story/art ❤️ Like others have said; without something that makes your art unique (which our faces and voices are inherently unique) you will need to work a little harder to get your art out there.

I don’t think any art is selfish, it builds authenticity and skill to experiment. But your business approach to add value is correct. You can do art for yourself and add value, I think Louise Fletcher is a good example of that where her whole ethos is teaching people to find joy in their art.

"Cannot stay the same" really struck me because I started making items with resin and while I enjoy it, it's not something that I can stick with forever because of the ups and downs when working with resin. So I came across one of your videos on TikTok and I thought to myself, "clay? make tiny art? Worth a shot" and while it took some trial and error, I find it relaxing. I didn't have to wear gloves, worry about toxic fumes, or the environment throughout the year. Like drawing, it was something I could do anytime

I have been giving myself small prompts so that the art im making will have some sort of appeal to customers, and doing test batches so I can discontinue designs that didn't sell! So playing with the fine line of profitable freedom and fully selfish art has been interesting:)

I think your point about not making selfish art is great but I think it’s also really important to point out that “requested” art absolutely does not always sell either. Especially when people request an artist or small business to create a certain style of jewelry or painting or even a clay piece like you and then they choose not to buy it because they suddenly can’t afford it, just wanted to see it and didn’t even have intent on buying it, or flat out don’t want it anymore. I had this happen once and never allowed it to happen again and I’ve seen it happen to a lot of other small businesses as well. As you said it is important to make things people actually want to buy but it’s also important to acknowledge this type of behavior from people that demand and request things and don’t buy it and waste the time, money, and materials of small businesses and artists. As lot of us do depend on our sales to cover business expenses, rent, medical bills, pet food, etc, I think more people need to acknowledge this side of the business too. If anyone reading this makes requested art or does customs, please take payment upfront or at least partial payment and protect yourself from losing your hard earned money on materials and wasting your precious time!
@andychrist32743 ай бұрын
That's why you usually go with a plan of half upfront before even starting a project and the other half before shipping out the product. That way you don't waste your time entirely when clients suddenly jump off or vanish
@shonthelawn3 ай бұрын
This is one way to do it but it’s definitely not the only way or the best way for everyone. You should do what works for you. Other people will say create authentic art and people will relate / recognize the authenticity. Check out Rick Rubin’s advice that “the audience comes last.” The merging of art and business is definitely complex so I hope people watching realize that there are multiple paths to success and they all look very different.
@caffeinatedhobgoblin3 ай бұрын
Exactly! It's really all a trial and error and take advice like this loosely. Try it for yourself, but if it's not working, try another way. While not making selfish art is great and definitely a part of the business, I think it also depends on what you are selling as well when it encompasses marketing. Like, I'm currently in the process of creating a tarot deck and that is sort of in the realm of half and half, if that makes sense. It's a selfish product, but it's also targeting a spiritual audience who might also connect with the cards and their messages. I think making selfless art/requested work has its place, especially to build a business and get people talking about it, but it's not the main thing nor something that needs to be done if it doesn't fit the business and/or audience you are trying to reach.

This is so true! I am a professional graphic designer and this is my fulltime job. I always say: Don't produce "art babies" (in my graphic design job). What I mean is: Don't let critique be something that destroys you in this field because the thing you created is too close to your heart. Yes, make AWESOME WORK - but learn that it's ok if the client don't like it, no matter how much effort you put into it. This helped me stay healthy. I am creative in my freetime too, and there I do the stuff I LIKE to draw/make/create most of the time. This is FOR ME.

I literally just had my first booth at a market this weekend and one of the most popular products I sold were ones I just made last minute and didn’t really think too much about bc I liked my other stuff more. When you said you need to make selfless art, that really resonated with me. At the end of the day, business is for your audience so thinking/making products for others that still represents who you are is so important. It’s not always about what we like/what we are super proud of or spent a lot of time making. Thank you for all the truths🫶🏼

You have to distinguish between design and art. Design is about making something that will sell because it is beautiful and usable. Art is something that connects with a contemporary feeling, ”zeitgeist” and you need intuition to feel that and it is a talent few have. Most artists are poor but being a designer is the easiest way to get rich if you are good at what you are doing. As an illustration of good design is the lemon press that looks like a spider designed by the French designer Phillippe Stark.

So maybe it is good to use Pinterest references and then practice enough to be able to visualize my own concepts. Thank you!!

These were great applicable insights. Definetly not harsh at all! Especially that last one, I am now giving myself that switch of mentality. The switch of business vs art for the soul. Also the reason I am starting a new IG because the current one feels too personal to just switch things up to "business", so thank you again Tammy/Uncomfy.

yes! the best thing i did for myself that i didn't realize was making an entirely new IG account just for my business. it's so freeing to create without feeling like people you know irl are judging you

Such a beautiful soul. The more I watch your videos, the more depth and meaning your brand “uncomfy” has. “Deep breaths” 😅

This 100% I was getting really lost and realized at the end of the day just being me is the best way forward. I use B roll of my art but add text or voice overs that has nothing to do with that but more with being a pet parent or an artist. I have realized just finding others like me is what I have found at markets and is the same online, just a different medium.

Thank you for sharing this! I feel like your tips make a lot of sense. I feel like the other hurdle is also how to form genuine connections without thinking of capitalising something in the background, when art IS your business. It's tough ))):

Great pep talk. I do have the vulnerability element & do my art as a form if creative expression & therapy. I haven't had much luck selling online. Will be taking part on a group exhibition next month.
