I’ve been going through the vipkid process and it’s been frustrating to say the least. I’ve done my mock class 5 times. Every time I score “just a few points short!” on the rubric and they ask me to repeat it. The problem is I get completely different and often conflicting feedback from each mentor. For example, in mock 4 the mentor told me it was confusing that I traced P on the slide AND on the whiteboard. So I just did it on the slide for mock 5. The mock 5 mentor said I should’ve used the whiteboard!! Mock 4 said I had too many props, mock 5 said I didn’t use enough props. I feel like they’re just stringing me along, and I’m about ready to throw in the towel. I have a masters degree and 10 years teaching experience. It’s nice to hear about magic ears; maybe I should move on to that.

Magic Ears is much more consistent, in my opinion. Of course, in either platform, whether it be ME or VK, the issue is "what works?" In some cases a whiteboard works great for a particular student in a given scenario while it wouldn't in another. Sometimes, it is these subtle differences of what is actually going on at the time and how the "student" is responding that makes it all over the map. I do think, you will find more straightforward info at ME though. If you watch videos and follow training, you will do great! YAY!!! You seem sooo happy Hope! I was thinking about applying for Magic Ears a while back. The 4:1 ratio kinda scared me though. I felt like I might not have enough time to give every student equal time to answer or if I did, that I might not get through all of the slides. Please let us know what your experience is in regard to those issues...it would be very helpful. Pacing and class management can be stressful....that's why the online 1:1 was so appealing to me. DO NOT APPLY TO Magic Ears. They engage in age prejudice. I did a great job giving my 8-minute interview, which I prepared hours for. They had encouraged me saying I would be a perfect fit and could probably get a secondary position as in interviewer. For the interview, I had several fun props: a ball to toss, a stuffed dolphin, a spy glass, and I even wore a cap with the inflatable ears. I was very playful and energetic for the entire 8 minutes. The interviewer told me the next step would be the trial 25-minute class, where I would be taught how to use the platform better, and suggested that I get a headset. So, I expected to be hired. Oh, but the next day I was told I didn't pass. IMPOSSIBLE. I practiced their demo video over and over and did virtually all the same things. I am American with two Master's degrees and over 20 years of experience teaching ESL. But, I'm 70 -- That's the problem.

Thanks for posting this. I am a new teacher with VIPkid and am struggling with booking. I started the last week of January right before Chinese New Year. I had 27 classes before the holiday and have not booked one class after. I din't have any problems passing through VIPkid. I got through on the first mock and am certified for trial, level 2 and 3, and global adventure but I have had no such luck the last two weeks. I was thinking about switching to magic ears and will use your referral.

I think it has it's pros and cons. The cons are not really problems, but just a learning curve and once you've done it a bit you'll be fine. The pros are that there is less pressure on you and on each student. It is distributed more. The kids get to watch interaction (rather than us modeling, they can see other kids do it). I think what Hope is describing is that to have a stable number of students and more job security that we should work for at least 2 online ESL Chinese companies at the same time. That is my plan and is what I am doing. That way if one company has growing pains or goes off the tracks (from our perspective with booking rates) such as receiving 100M in funding and starts hiring like crazy, hopefully, the other one remains as an anchor. I heard that the Chinese parents spend like 90US an hour for a VIPKID hour (I work there too) so the teacher wage at around 22US is only 25% of that total. I also noticed that some companies take teacher penalties into their profit model by being too severe ... like 300% penalty for a no show (Likeshuo) (when most of us would never intentionally do that because we would get fired after 2 or 3 of those). I am juggling 2 platforms and will decide which to give my main availability to soon and I love the job security and job experience that comes with doing it. I have learned so much and feel like we need to be patient and yet proactive so as not to feel "stuck to one company either". There are over 170 other esl Chinese online companies.

Agree with you on everything in this video. I am very eager to leave VIPKID. All of the positive things that you describe about Magic Ears- well that was VIPKID in the beginning. 2 years ago they were all super nice and understanding, would always be willing to help you out or give you a get out of jail free card if you messed up. Then fast forward to 2017 where they hired something like ~20,000 teachers in 12 months. They have changed and gotten super greedy. They are heartless and everyone is just a number. I would never recommend anyone to work for VIPKID. I am excited to get started at Magic Ears. Thanks for making this video.

I love the way Magic Ears sounds. I've been with VIPKID for forty-something days and I'm still jumping through hoops to earn a chance to teach master courses. Also, since I'm a full-time brick and mortar teacher, I noticed too that their curriculum planning does not seem strong and all over the place. I am just wondering how successful students really are in learning English this way. I was surprised to learn that smaller companies have interactive platforms vs. VIPKID 's primitive way. Also, purple is one of my favorite colors. Tomorrow I will teach my bonus/jumpstart class. This is a class you teach after doing more mock classes after you've been hired. I am hoping that this leads to me getting some bookings. If not I'm going to give Magic Ears a try. I love purple!

I've heard that they are not as culturally diverse as other ESL online companies and they don't really hire black teachers much because parents are not receptive to having a black teacher. Can you please touch on that because I submitted my application today before I watched those videos and I don't want to waste my time going through the whole process if I will have problems actually teaching.

Unfortunately bias and prejudice does exist in China. The good thing about Magic Ears is that the parents aren't doing the booking, so they get to experience all of the teachers and expand their thinking in the process. Magic Ears very much wants to be part of this educational process and is very happy to hire teachers of all designs! I've personally referred Teachers of Color who have been successful! Give it a try! Do make sure that you fill out your application very thoroughly and carefully. Giving the "wrong answer" to a question can cause an application to be booted during the automated screening process. I like working for both companies. The personal connections I've formed with my VIPKID students mean a lot to me, to the point where I was able to visit 12 families in China, and be invited into their homes and that was amazing. Magic Ears does not allow for that type of connection, which I completely understand. You dont work as closely with each child. Magic Ears has a great platform and a different classroom dynamic that I enjoy too. My pay rate is exactly the same from both companies, if I open the amount of spots for MEs second bonus. It's my plan to find a balance between the two. I hope it works out great for you too, Hope!

Right now I am looking to finish my degree in something that will allow me to work online so I can stay home with my kids. I’ve always been really good in English courses so that would be something that I could definitely do. Would you recommend getting a degree in education instead? Also, if I do have to get some experience in teaching, how would I go about that? Would tutoring qualify? I’m just trying to figure out what I would need to do to make myself look the best to potential online employers.

Magic Ears does pay $1 more per hour for people with a degree in Education. However, I don't think I'd change my degree plan based on one company, who is likely to change. Tutoring counts for many companies!

I just joined your FB group. I just signed the contract with VIPKID and feel paralyzed to open my schedule. I was told I needed to open every slot and basically wake up every hour on the hour to see if I have any last minute classes! I have a life..how am I to function if I have to do this for days in order to get my first bookings?!?! Plus VIKID has soooo many rules that I'm scared to death I'm going to forget to do something and get bad reviews then not get booked because I messed up. I'm super interested in Magic Ears...have you heard of DadaABC? Its another company I'm looking into. thanks!

I think you could do it in 6 days best case (there are others who have done it a tad faster) or you could draw it out. The only reason it would take a long time is due to scheduling, like if there are limited spots for meetings and you can't meet the schedule. In that case, it could take as long as you need, I think. You'd just want to be in touch.

Hello, several people and myself included, applied to ME last month (We all work for VIP) did not get hired. After applying, via a referral link, we received an email to teach a demo about Ken and his mother. Less than 24 hours later we received an email saying "Sorry you did not pass the interview process, but you can still receive a referral bonus by sending teachers our way." My question is, how can I send teachers their way when I do not understand what they are looking for? Any ideas?? Also, when I applied for ME my bookings were low and I was trying to find other avenues of making money teaching ESL online. Side note.... The classes that I have taught I did receive 5 apple ratings (37 to be exact). Just wondering, in case others are looking to apply and need to know what they are looking for in a teacher.

It depends on what your fulltime income needs are and if you really mean full time (40 hours a week). VIPKID is the only company I know of where you can work that much at this time. IF you could get booked solid with them, then that might be the way to go. If by "full time" you mean that you want this to be a major contributor to your financial position and your "main job" you could go with any company. Magic Ears does offer the chance for secondary positions, which, if you get one, could give you more daytime earning potential.

And to answer your question, it all depends on bookings whether you would need more than one company of not as well as how many slots you are trying to fill along with your booking rate. Independent of all that, however, I do recommend that you work for more than one company at this time. I like Magic Ears for starters.

Good Morning! After watching your video, I applied with Magic Ears and used your referral code. I received a response stating that I did very well in my interview but that I needed to adjust my camera angle, screen shot it and sent it back and they would proceed with my application. They attempted to attach an example, but there was an error in the attachment and therefore, I cannot see it. I have contacted the company by email twice to have them resend the example, but I have not heard anything back. Do you have any insight as to what they may me looking for? I have looked on the portal but there are no examples there. I really want to continue with the application process but I don't want to send the wrong thing and have my application turned down. In my opinion, the stress is less with Magic Ears. VIPKID has a rubric with like 20 factors, while Magic Ears basically really stresses three things: Teaching passion (energy), sound control in the classroom, and pacing. I think it is so much nicer to just really be able to focus on these things and lower the stress. My advice is to go ahead and apply with Magic ears. I backed out with VIPKID before my mock 2. Too many red flags. Plus, I found out you average about 3 to 4 hours a week of unpaid prep time and then face regular cancellations after putting in all of that unpaid prep time! No thanks. Too much guessing went into the interview process with VIPKID, and that was a huge red flag!

Just curious -- Why did you become Admin for VIPKID Teachers Community (the largest FB VIPKID group on Facebook) just recently when you say you were talking to Magic Ears? I know there's no non-compete clause, and that's not what I'm asking about, so all good. ;-) It's just that the VTC Admin thing is really puzzling, especially given how glowingly you talk about Magic Ears in comparison to VIPKID in this video, is all. If I understand the confusion, it's about how loyal to VIPKID one might expect the admin to be to. Is that right? I don't agree. On the contrary, I feel that the admin of the group should have her and the group's best interests in mind rather than the company's interests. Strict loyalty to the company by the admin means the group won't discuss issues with VIPKID, use the group to advocate for themselves, etc. It would just become an extension of VIPKID administration...a VIPKID fan club, which we don't need. If those are needed, VIPKID will provide them. We are here to provide community and a platform to support each other. Just for clarification, I do still love VIPKID, I still work for them, and I hope to continue advocating for teachers. I do feel it's best to be honest about the shortcomings though, so that they can be addressed.

Un-uh. Never said anything about loyalty. I myself have posted about and commented on FB on issues that have been brought up about VIPKID and don't find anything disloyal about it at all. In fact, I think such open discussion definitely is necessary. My question had to do with focus -- The FB group is made up of VIPKID teachers (you have to prove that you're already teaching with VIPKID in order to join) and its description says it's about VIPKID. I certainly see why you would start your other FB group for teachers who work for (are interested in working for) both VIPKID and Magic Ears. Teachers who are teaching for both companies need a forum to discuss the unique experiences and issues that surely come with that work situation. The largest FB VIPKID group on Facebook, however, wasn't established as that. I was definitely one of those who supported more open discussion within that group, but I don't remember agreeing that the focus of the group in any way should ever deviate from its focus on the experience working for VIPKID and how to help make that experience and the company the best it can be (which naturally will entail both praise and critique). To be clear -- I'm not corporate VIPKID, I'm not an extension of the VIPKID administration, nor part of any "VIPKID fan club". I don't relegate the large FB group to 'fan club' status. There still is a need for those who are teaching with VIPKID to have a forum that is clearly focused on VIPKID, because thousands of us joined that group specifically because we wanted the focus to be about our experience with VIPKID - the good AND not so good. [Please excuse typos and run-ons. "Late morning" is actually late in the day for me, ;-) ] P.S. I'm all for teachers, too. As I posted when the group was under other administration, I have a voice and am fine with advocating for myself. My understanding was that the group would be a place where issues and ideas would be hashed out so teachers could find their own voice. I truly do wish you good luck in your new ventures! :-)

And, of course, Hope,...We are acquainted with each other; we're in the same town and have worked well side-by-side before. I'm sure we'll see each other at a VIPKID function at some point and can discuss more if either of us wants to. I don't want to get your video off track with your intentions for it. Hi Teresa, I would welcome a chance to talk to you if you like, especially if anything is concerning. I think it may be hard to understand each other through this communication method. If I understand your concern, it is that the group might start to be split in some way or share time with Magic Ears? My thoughts on that are that 1) I have decided not to mention affiliation with ME on the group so that this doesn't happen (at least not in the context of my causing it. 2) There is a chance that a VIPKID group could begin to talk about another company extensively when they are not censored. Magic Ears is getting pretty popular with Magic Ears teachers so I'm betting people will discuss it there some. I doubt it will become a primary conversation though. As I said when I began, I will not determine the personality of the group. The group will be about VIPKID if that's what the members make it about. Their posts and comments determine the content. I took over the group at a crucial moment when there was fear it would be deleted or archived. I was asked to talk to the existing admin because she and I had been friends and many people thought she would give me the group rather than just walk away. It was at an odd time for me, but I hadn't made any decision yet at that time. I decided taking the group to save it would be the best thing. I think as long as I am working for both companies, I can care for the group. If at some point I leave VIPKID altogether, then the group may want to get a new admin. I may be working for another company, but my experience lies with VIPKID and what it is like to be a VIPKID teacher. My interest in running the group is only to help them advocate for themselves and support each other as a community. None of my contracts with any of the other ESL companies I work for will change my experience with and passion for this community of influence how I handle it. In truth, I feel like I contribute little more to the group than some order and organization of what the members are already trying to do.

(Theresa with an 'h'. ;-) ) Yes, discussion that's initiated by the group members is a minimum standard. In that group, I've seen plenty of discussions come up in the past about different opportunities when the group members brought it up and wanted to discuss it. I had no expectations that that would change.

To be eligible for the extra dollar per class bonus, you do have to open a minimum of time slots per month, though! It was 80, now I believe it's 60.

LingLab I'm receiving $25/hr, teaching one student. Not including bonus incentives for each student I sign up. I know VipKid has a strict attendance policy that I don't agree with, but this program isn't for me. Thanks for sharing the pro and cons tho. And I'm glad that it does work for some out there! Make that shhmoney!!!
