I was also introduced to Pokemon with Gen 4. I never owned a system so I played it with my friend. Recently I tried to find out which generation it was since I didn't remember, but I managed to find out because the wild battle theme was engrained in my brain. I really hope that there will be Gen 4 Remakes. I want to listen to the remastered/remixed version of that theme.

@AlmightyCeld eh. Imo i think its a bit overrated due to the anime. Dont get me wrong, i love Infernape, but its definitely not the best pokemon ever. Its design is great but its also just a fire monkey. I like what they did with it but i see the best pokemon design as a thing you cant do much with like a beetle or a spider and turn it into something unique. Like Heracross and Alolan Raichu. Im not saying their better than Infernape but they took a static mouse and turned it into a Psychic Surfer. I think that is what makes a pokemon the "best". Personally i have a bias towards Decidueye due to it being the first starter i solo runned with. But looking past that you cant use bias to tell which mon is the best necessarily. But if you look past you Infernape bias and still consider it the "best" then i wont argue
