People's Choice before (or after) every award. Don't even have to announce it, just have a a little banner at the bottom of the screen 'People's Choice: x'. I think that it's also a bit more clear to us what the critics are voting for. Hell maybe even mention 'With 42% of the votes 'X' wins' and have some percentages below for the rest of the top 3/5

Demon Slayer has great animation. That's it. There are some genuinely good moments. But when it comes to the power system and the world, it is very bare. So...no, it certainly wasn't the best fantasy for me. That honour belongs to Mushoku/Abyss. I think some award categories need to be removed from voting. Anime of the Year and fan favourite should not be the same thing.

Crunchyroll needs to get rid of public votes altogether and leave it to a large panel of judges. Public votes just leaves things to popular vote sweeps too much or trolling. They could further prevent sweeps by limiting anime nominations to only one of the major categories: Best Action, Comedy, Drama, Romance, or Fantasy. That way something like Demon Slayer can't win both best action and fantasy, letting other anime have a chance. Nominees for anime of the year could also be limited to winners of major categories: action, comedy, drama, romance, fantasy as well as best new series, original series, and best film. If an anime is not considered best in one of those categories how can it be considered anime of the year. Cyberpunk didn't win any other category other than best English VA so how can you consider it the best anime of the year. The other categories are just consolation prizes.

Public votes results depends on which type of people and community that is voting. If you check the winners of Anime Trending Award, they are mostly not popular shounen shows even with 100% public voting. Top 3 are Bocchi the Rock, Summer Time Rendering and Lycoris Recoil. Of course the voters are people who passionly watch a lot of anime every season instead of mainstream normies.

FYI the girl that Garnt talked about who was crying on the table when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was announced as the winner is Saya Elder, CD Projekt Red's Japan based producer for Edgerunners. She was basically the liason between CDPR and Studio Trigger for that project. You could see her in Night City Wire episode 1 announcing Edgerunners back in July 2020.

I think Cyberpunk: Edgerunners really deserved to win anime of the year. It was a very strong anime in terms of characters and production, but the thing I liked most about it is the end. And Personally, I never know how an anime like Lycoris Recoil was nominated for Anime of the Year. In my opinion, the anime was very normal, the characters in it were annoying and the events were very predictable. The only good thing about it was the production. And Honestly, I don't think it deserves more than 5/10

@@mateusz7953 for some reason episode 6 didn't really hit me that much. I think it's because Maine kinda did it to himself, and I find it hard to empathise with self inflicted harm. Episode 10 however... I am not ashamed to say I cried like a little bitch at the end. I knew it was coming before even watching the show (gotta love spoilers) but it still hit like a cyberskeleton. Lucy on the moon...every time I think about her remembering David and then him just disappearing I start tearing up. The pure pain coming off her in that last shot of her standing alone facing the sun hurts my soul. I will never be able to listen to that song without breaking down again.

I think the problem with the Crunchyroll system is the lack of nominees and that the judges had more weight than the audience votes. It's like 70% judges votes 30% audience votes. Like here's the thing, for the Anime of the Year category alone, audiences can vote through the website AND through retweets, and retweets are public, so anyone could see that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had the most retweets. While that doesn't provide a full picture of the audience voting results, it gives a good idea that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners actually had more audience votes than Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, or Spy X Family. So what I think what happened is that the Crunchyroll judges prefer Attack on Titan , Spy X Family, and Demon Slayer over Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Netflix is a direct competitor to Crunchyroll) so they gave the awards to them in so many other categories, but since the retweets are public and it's very obvious that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had the most audience votes, they felt like they had no choice but to give the AOTY to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

I totally agree with Gigguk in that DS and AOT are both really great anime, with DS deserving its action and animation win and AOT deserving its drama and MC win. But holy fucking shit how did DS win best fantasy. No doubt at all Made In Abyss should’ve had that (with Mushoku 2nd). It’s actually a joke that DS was in fantasy, it’s literally set in a historical era. I also think Made in Abyss deserved best score because damn that was the best ost I’d ever heard in anime, respect to Kevin Penkin (although in that one, at least AOT did have a good score)

5 is average. I consider an an "average" anime uninteresting, and if it does nothing special or interesting it's bad. So while 5 is objectively "average" it is actually "bad". By extension 7 is "good", but since the minimum requirement for me to even watch an anime past episode one is for it to be "good", 7 is now my "average". So while objectively 5 is "average" and 7 is "good", subjectively 5 is "bad" and 7 is "average". Hope this helped explain our reasoning.

The problem is not fan vote counts so much (Edgerunners winning over AOT proves that it is not only a popularity contest) but the categorization. All the nominees should be worthy of winning on that category and if an anime is not, shouldn´t have been nominated on that category to begin with. That´s why Demon Slayer shouldn´t have been nominated on fantasy.

Honestly crunchyroll should have stricter guidelines for nominations, catagories, and voting if they want to be legit. They invited famous people in the anime industry only to give out awards to a select few animes for only being most popular. Kind of leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I think it shows how under-watched Made in Abyss is. Which I do understand why. As brilliant as it is, it doesn't really show it's brilliance on a surface level to really attract new watchers in. Demon slayer is set in Taishou Era, which's the past Japan that actually existed. Voters probably just threw votes to DS because they liked it Or they just don't know how to tell the difference between "Supernatural" and "Fantasy", as ridiculous as it sounds. I can't understand the tastes of people who think DS has better character designs than that of smth like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which every eng-speaking watcher loved the fuck out of it as far as I've seen. Anya is the main character, everything revolves around her & she gets the most screentime, no matter how you look at it. " Protect at all cost" sounds pretty whacky too. Obviously, solely made for her to win, at the cost of best boy & best girl awards. Nothing wrong with with voting your favorites but come on, let's put on some reasonable taste.

@@hound89Inuyasha has time travel & a lot of fantasy elements to it which are essential to keep the story going. Castlevania, I don't know much. Demon slayer only has superhuman breathing, demons (basically, more brutal & unsexy Japanese vampires) & some talking birds. My point is that fantasy basically has nothing to do with it. Other nominees, Made in Abyss, Overlord, Ranking of Kings & Jobless Reincarnation are actually fantasy animes that you're forced to realize that fact once you see the opening.

It should be explicitly defined as a show that takes place in an actual fantasy land or in another world, not an alternative history or alternate reality show or a show with supernatural elements. having supernatural elements does not make it a fantasy show, its a fantasy show when it takes place in an actual fantasy. Technically attack on titan is more of a fantasy show than demon slayer.

I think that’s a little unfair to works of historical fantasy and an over correction. Daemon Slayer is basically a work of fantasy but it shouldn’t have won the category on those credentials. The issue is the panel composition and vote formula.

@@gma5607 I would describe demon slayer as a supernatural action show rather than a historical fantasy. I feel like a strong element for fantasy shows is that not only is it set in a distinct fantasy world, there's also a considerable amount of world building that goes into it. Demon slayer to me never feels like it tries to do any world building besides this is just 1900s Japan culture with demons. Ya know But I see what you mean in that there is definitely an aspect where it's becoming too much of a popularity contest to be fair to shows that actually represent the genre.

Have ti disagree with the Soundtrack nomination. I enjoyed both AoT and Cyberpunk really much. Cyberpunk had some bangers, that you could listen to outside of the series (altough all the good songs from the videogame) But AoT’s soundtrack made the scenes they were used in so much better. I highly disagree with S4’s OST not being on par with S1-S3. The difference is mainly only in the style. Aside from the purely emotional slow songs, most songs from S1-S3 were forced into your face with insanely loud noises, for epicness (which it really succseded in). S4’s Songs are just as brilliant, while not really similar to the previous seasons (except some hype tracka that are used for Scout action) The rumbling Scene The Cave Scene The Converstation between eren and Reiner The Nicolo vs Gabi debate Zeke’s backstory Alliance vs Jaegerist latter half Rumbling arriving at marley These are all scenes that use PERFECT songs, which points to a really special OsT imo. Havent seen Made in Abyss, so i can not form an opinion on that, but Cyberpunk’s OsT as a whole was much inferior to AOT’s

No it was bad, but everything they did with Kaho was handled extremely well even better than the manga of what they adapted. That will never be erased due to its bad ending. Anyone who says the anime isn’t worth watching and that the soulless live action is the better version or only read the manga truly have blinder’s on. People truly believe that the ending is Paramount forgetting that the journey to get there is why you even give shit to stay for the ending. Maybe this is misleading opinion. I think the best character design was more reflecting how much the cosplayers wants to play the series' character. So if we look in that pov, Demon Slayer surely has nothing wrong to win this category. I realize S×F, LycoReco etc also favorites for some cosplayer, but mostly cosplay trend is more referring into superpower characters, like Genshin & Demon Slayer.

AT is better in that it had more nominees. Now the problem with AT is that most audience there only prefer anime with little girls and fan service, so an anime with a lot of substance but not much fan service and little girls won't have a chance to win AOTY there. Like in 2021 Mieruko-chan won in AT over Mushoku Tensei and there is no way that Mieruko-chan is better than Mushoku Tensei. No one can tell me that. Mieruko-chan was only voted in AT over Mushoku because of the girls and fan service, that's it.

Because talk about serious problem (rudeus had lot of bad situation and some of them are very relatable) and his focus is on the characters psychology (literally talk about depression, racism and feel worthy). At the other hand demon slayer is a, not so original, dark fantasy with great animation and fight scene and......... No, it only have this things. But is more popular so wins. I know this is bullshit but nowadays if something is serious and talk about real problems, and still have good animation and fight scene, is less popular than tha classic hero's journey with great animation. I mean there's people who think demon slayer is a masterpiece or something. To this people I would like to say: it's a fate wannabe. Blue Period anime is really good. People don’t have the time to consume two mediums. I’m an anime watcher and I miss some good shit if I read manga. I finished the Demon Slayer manga and never watched the show because of that. I legit think people who preach the “manga” bullshit have way too much time on their hands. Personally the only adaptations that fall short are when the mangaka who’s work is being adapted is like Fujimoto, someone who plays with their medium to make their story incredibly unique and hard to adapt to animation. Or your The Promised Neverland.
