"we need more creators like you who are honest about minimalism" - No, we don't. Why? Because each to their own. For one person minimalism is one thing, but for the other it is something different, but it doesn't mean one of them is dishonest about it. Each person sees things in their own way and what is true to you may not be true to me (as for example the perspective on minimalism and honesty I am referring to here), so for you to say that "we need more honest creators" isn't accurate either, because you may deem them dishonest, but it doesn't mean they aren't honest about their minimalism.

You're totally right! Minimalism isn't only about spending less, having less or declutter. And isn't only about material things too. It's about purpose. The meaning we give to things. To people. To experiences. To environments around us. It's about the way we perceive the world and what we allow to enter our world (physical, mental and emotional). Great video, as always 👌🏻

“Minimalism” isn’t about “stuff” alone. This lifestyle is about the people in our lives and clearing out anyone who is unhealthy to us. The food you eat and how you prepare it. The books, music and films you “consume”. These things “go into you” and are apart of you. Consume what has meaning for you 🌼 Consume time with those you love and who love you🌼 Consume experiences vs things🌼 Consume work that has depth for you🌼 Feeling free from any form of being trapped is minimalism at its best and the antithesis is feeling trapped by being consumed by everything in your life (stuff/ people/ food/etc). Living each day for small things that fill you with contentment 🪴is a minimalistic life. 🕊Minimalistly, yours Kara

I grew up in a privileged household. We weren't filthy rich or anything. However, we had a very nice house and wooded land on the river, skiing vacations in Colorado, etc. . . and we weren't abused. So it was better than growing up in a VERY wealthy household where there was abuse. I notice my siblings and myself have a tendency to think TOO highly of ourselves. I pray about this on a regular basis, because I want to be humble; because the Bible says that, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Thank you Nate, I am grateful to hear your opinion. I also felt this way last year, that the “elevated life” life I was living wasn’t bringing me a lot of happiness. I was a Jewelry Sales Person and a micro mechanic. I did pretty well, free drinks, vacations, spending time with millionaires, etc. Though I never needed any of that to be happy either. I voluntarily left so I could pursue a more meaningful existence. I went back to school for software engineering and I never looked back. It’s not very often that you here about this perspective, but it can be unsettling to feel like a winner all the time. Especially if it demeans other people, what kind of winner thinks so lowly of others? That’s not the kind of man I want to be. So thank you Nate, it brought me a little peace to hear it from a stranger. All that glitters is not gold.

I absolutely loved this video! I'm glad you got a taste of the "lifestyles of the rich and 'famous'". You were spiritually evolved enough to know when to quit, so to speak. However the experience of this showed you that over indulgence because you can is not fulfilling either, to some of us. But that's the beauty of contrast. It shows you the differences so you can make a better choice. I find myself now being a consumer of consumables (not necessarily expensive ones). When I go out or travel, I will find myself purchasing coffee, tea, candles, incense, body care products--anything that I can consume/use up so I'm not collecting something. At the same time, I'm helping a small business or artisan. That's what I love doing because I do businesses too.

When I think of minimalism, I think of "Walden". Great book and classic minimalism, in my opinion. But even Thoreau walked away from that "experiment" after a couple of years. People change. Priorities change. Don't get obsessed on a particular lifestyle or it loses its meaning and becomes a burden.

Very well said Nate! What I’ve learned is that a degree of materialism is okay. There are certain items that ground a person and bring personal fulfillment. For example, I have a special necklace and painting from my great grandmother. But yes we need to be aware of our consumption of things that don’t bring personal fulfillment and don’t serve a real purpose. Again, awesome video 💙Look forward to more

One of the things that makes me happy is to give to others. I think it’s kind of cringy when I see certain people with wealth beyond belief and they are completely selfish. It’s perfectly fine to spend money on yourself especially if you have earned it. I love nice cars and nice houses. It’s just when I see people on social media bragging about the 100th car they have bought or designer this or that. After a while I think, how empty.

Becoming a parent at a very young age taught me a lot about minimising everything from things to time and money. The reason that people can think they are better than others when they have money is because it's equated with success. Success though is living life in the way that makes you happy!

I am in no way a minimalist, but I do strive to consume less. I've recently found the best way for me to do that is to be my own producer. I've started growing and preserving my own food. A huge chunk of my budget was going towards food at the grocery store or eating out. It does appear that I have many things but a good bit of that is for food production. To each his own. Minimalism is what works for the individual.

Very interesting video. I’m getting the sense that it’s not so much about minimalism not working, but you having to contend with the fact that spending time with the more affluent members of your network compels you to make choices that contradict the ideals of minimalism (the environmental aspect of it at least). Maintaining connections with people who value vastly different kind of lifestyle to yours (for economical or ethical reasons) will be a challenge and by default introduce conflict. Also, there’s research on the link between wealth and levels of empathy, which confirms your personal experience of disconnect from the issues an average person faces in life. It’s interesting to know that this disconnect can happen if you previously led modest lifestyle or come from a working class background and rose to financial security later in life. We’re all prone to this I guess.

12 years ago, my husband said his goal was to have everything he owned could fit in one box. We took that seriously. Biked across the country, self-supported, with everything we needed on the bikes. I discovered I was still attached to things, I mean, the things were really tiny and I had only two shirts, etc... everything tiny little thing I still really NEEDED. Still very attached to things

I believe minimalism isn't so much a lifestyle as an exercise in identifying what is important vs stuff that is a distraction from the important. Therefore you can be a minimalist but still enjoy things that you're into. Maybe once a year or at a routine interval you need to consciously reviewing your choices and direction.

This is what Elon Musk was talking about when he said being rich was not a bad thing but consuming too much is. That’s why shaming people for being rich makes no sense since being rich just means you receive a lot for producing a lot. Producing more than you consume should be the main goal and not living a lavish lifestyle just for the sake of it.

I believe it's about finding a healthy balance between being spiritual and living in this modern day society, there's some things we can't change about how our society has advanced over the years but it's up to us to keep ourselves grounded and connected with ourselves and not lose site of our natural state that's why it's good to be out in nature and enjoying the simple things in life .....there's nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy the finer things/ luxuries in life just keep yourself in check and be humble ... it's all up to the individual but we all need to find time to be more compassionate and to respect one another focus on a persons character and heart not what they have materialisticaly

Minimalism has been working out great for me. I've decluttered the absolute insane mess of utter garbage I've collected over twenty years and now I have one 33QT tote for my clothing, another 33QT tote for electronics and other stuff I need and a backpack with camping stuff. I have a family of 5 so house is still cluttered with junk. Next goal is to tackle living more frugal, self reliant and sustainable to bring down the total household clutter.

I'm a minimalist with physical things (clothes, furniture, etc.) but also in digital and actionable things. For digital, an example would be with my emails. I unsubscribe immediately from marketing emails. After I read an email, I'll either delete it, move it to a folder, or leave it in the inbox if I need to take action on it in the near future. My inbox is usually empty but never more than 5 emails at once. Another example is my MacBook desktop. I only pin the apps that I most commonly use at the bottom bar. I have one text file on my desktop. For actionable things, I try to automate as much as possible. Instead of manually paying my bills once a month, I have a recurring schedule to automatically pay for them. I receive a text once it's complete. I don't do all these things because I'm following a "minimalism plan". Each thing just happened naturally.
