This has been so helpful for my 2 yr old rescued former Great Dane show dog. It has also been beneficial for my well trained 8 yr old GSD who I lapsed in continued training with. Great for training myself in need of training.

Thanks for your expertise! I am just getting started on really researching how to best approach training our dog. He is a pitbull rescue (4 years old), that we got last year during COVID. He didn't have a lot of exposure to people outside our family and now that we are seeing more people, it is always a headache to have them over at first. He is very distrustful of strangers and barks at anyone new. As long as they ignore him and don't try to address him he usually will calm down after some time, but it is hard to train the people not to give him attention (or not be terrified of him). It sounds like we need to work on desensitization. My biggest fear is that we can't train that distrust out of him, but maybe it is possible?

I feel like I’m starting from scratch with her now that we are able to be out. Please tell me it I can get her through all these stages 🥺🥺🥺💀💀💀… She’s super smart and I just want her to live her best life!!

Hi Nate, Question for redirection. If a puppy is biting something you don't want them to, is it ok to redirect them with a toy? A trainer I was talking to mentioned that redirecting with a toy can create a positive association to what they were originally doing which in turn could encourage bad behaviour. What's your input? Thanks for all these videos!
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's fine. You're just trading one toy (your hand or something else) for another toy (an actual dog toy). Redirecting doesn't teach the puppy not to play bite or mouth people or other objects. It just gives them a different option. Most puppies grow out mouthing and play biting when they are done teething around 6 months of age. If it continues, then you would probable need a correction to stop the behavior. Play biting is a self reinforcing behavior, meaning the behavior itself is fun and reinforcing. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). If you're using a flat collar and that's not working, then you may need to use a prong collar or remote training collar to stop the behavior. I hope this helps!

Hello, I just got my 16 wk old (8/29/22) GSD yesterday. She is not socialized, very afraid and low confidence. Training her is training her is challenging because she’s extremely picky. She doesn’t like (and I’ve tried) training treats, Chicken (boiled, fried, I even tried a piece of a McDonald’s chicken nugget) and freeze dried chicken all of which she just smells it and turns head. She hardly likes the freeze dried salmon, she gets tired of it fat add plays with it in her mouth. I’ve tried the peanut butter and the stick that goes in the kong, she doesn’t like it. I’ve tried Cesar’s Simply Crafted which she does like but it’s not practical as a Training treat and she won’t eat her regular dog food (Royal canine) if I use the. I tried toys, she likes the rope but she’s not even confident with that, she bites it with her front teeth and plays with it with her tongue. I tried a beef rib I got from petco (doesn’t like) and a pig ear (likes but not excited by it). I would like to socialize bill build confidence and train her but she doesn’t like anything and lacks confidence to even play tug of war. She’s not motivated, seems lazy but she’s a GSD and hopefully my psychiatric service animal. Do you have any suggestions? I’m lost, I don’t know what to do. I’m currently watching this playlist to hopefully get some ideas but what do you think is up? What can I do? Can this be fixed? Thank you, I hope to hear from you soon. I love your content. Ps: I am a truck driver so most of her training is on the road, In my truck or truck stops and she absolutely loves the Cinnabon icing that she accidentally got a taste of when she smelled me eating I Cinnabon and tried to jump on my bed.

I’ve taught all basic obedience but feel rushed to move on to more advanced skills in case I miss some sort of early window of opportunity. Is this the case or can I pace my training out and not feel stressed about falling behind on my training plan ( Raya is 6 months ). Id much prefer to continue brushing up on learnt skills and do more personal research before moving forward
