I read books by Tom Rose way back in late 70s and 80s, he’s always been great! Wish I could have gone to his school but I had a young child when I went into professional training so I never went. So glad his school is still going strong!

I have been watch literally ALL your videos, which I absolutely love and have been using your teaching for my 10yo gsd who did protection training as a pup to 2yo and my 3yo toy poodle, I couldn't believe it worked for my toy poodle and has been working extremely well I'm blown away at how fast she learns things and I feel bad it took 3 years to figure it out even though she's always been really good and easily as smart as my gsd! Reason I started watching was because I am picking up another gsd and am training her for search and rescue work, and therapy dog for sick kids.

Hi Nate! I just discovered your channel about an hour ago and I've already watched several videos and subscribed! I was most interested in your service dog training series, so I was disappointed to see that you only uploaded two videos demonstrating the process of training Harley. Are there more videos in the series and I'm just not finding them?

Awesome! Thank you! No, just those two for now. I was going to add more, but Harley's owner wanted to take Harley home before all the training was completed. I plan on adding more in the future. Cheers!

Thank you for the videos! Do you have any suggestions for training stubborn dog breeds?
@NateSchoemer

Thanks! I always follow the same process with each dog that I train. In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early. I explain all of this in detail in my dog training manual available here: amzn.to/2P2tyQH I hope this helps and thanks for the support. Cheers!

Does the tracking box lay an initial foundation to the dog that it's acceptable to spin? It seems counter intuitive to start them in a box where they can spin and then try to correct that later

Hi Nate! First I want to thank you for the information you provide with your videos, you are the best explaining trainer I know here in you tube. I have a question and I will be very thankful if you have the time to answer me. I have 4 months old male doberman, I walk him sometimes with my bicycle for about 1km per day because he is still young, but I am not sure if this is OK for him. How long an average doberman should run and at what age he will be fully developed to run longer? Thank you and keep up with the good work it really helps!

Great Video as always :-)- ??? Question Nate if you wouldn't mind ??? So... I have been following all your videos the last year and have been able to teach my dog so many useful commands thanks to you. I am forever greatfull and always and would always recommend you whenever I can. As I have been able to get my GSD to quiet a high standard and hope to get her to high obedience level, I don't really want to leave her with family or at a kennels as I am afraid it might effect her training in a negative way and don't want it to go backwards or for her to pick up any bad habbits. Unfortunately, I have to go away for a few days soon and cannot bring her with me, so my question is ... what do you recommend I do with her kennels or family she has never spent a night at either and would I tell them her commands or not etc also any element that makes it difficult is I hand feed her during training only and she does not get feed by the bowl, should I do there???
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Start feeding her from a bowl a few days or so before you leaving. When I leave, I either have someone come to the house to take care of the dogs or use Rover. I don't leave my dogs at boarding kennels because I'm not too fond of the environment. Someone's home is much better. As long as the person knows how to care for dogs, I don't worry too much about it. They won't ruin the training in a few days. Just make sure they don't use any positive punishment or yell at the dog. Positive punishment can be helpful for training, but when done incorrectly, it can cause issues. I hope this helps!

What treats are used or food?
@NateSchoemer

For training, I’ve been using N&D pumpkin, maxi giant size. It works really well for training and the pieces are about the size of a quarter. I also like to used freeze dried dog food when it’s in the budget. 😁

I recently found out that my GSD is using her eyes to look for the track and the treats. I took her training back to the beginning using this method. My question is, if she misses the treat, do I bring her back to it, or do I just let her continue on the line as long as her nose is down.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 11 ай бұрын
I would continue on the line. Teaching dogs to turn around for a missed treat can become a bad habit. We always want them to move forward, as turning around can cost points if you're competing. Additionally, if you're interested in learning more about tracking, I would highly recommend Tom Rose's book, 'Dog Training with the Touch.' It's excellent!

Would really appreciate if you answer me. My 12 week old GSD I've been potty training him for a month he knows where he should poop and pee but he doesn't understand that he is not allowed in the house, i live In an apartment so can I still take him out immediately after his accident or will he forget midway about the accident and won't understand the correction? Also how do I interrupt him? Should I yell? Because even when i say No! He still continues, should I use a leash pop? I don't think he'll understand it's a correction though? Can I leash pop with a harness? He sometimes pees on the way of me taking him out (in the elevator) because I've said No multiple times and pulled on the leash but he still won't respond and have an accident. Please help

Watch this video, so you can have a better understanding of how we clearly communicate with our dogs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXSxm6uKo9ibbrs You may have to correct the bad behavior to stop it. Here's a section from my dog training manual that may be helpful. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this: • One: Preventing the dog from practicing the undesired behavior. • Two: Using a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So, in the end, the 58 motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept: Imagine every dog has a bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. You can get a copy of my manual here: amzn.to/2P2tyQH
