Ginobili was a rookie and Parker was only in his 2nd year in 2003. David Robinson was also at the end of his career. Duncan carried the Spurs in 2003. One point Tracy is overlooking is how stacked the West was back then. When the Lakers went on that 3-peat, everyone knew the Western Conference Finals winner was the Finals winner. THAT was the real championship. Facing the East's winner was just a formality. The Pistons bucked that trend at the height of the Shaq/Kobe beef, but ain't no way the Pacers, 76ers, Nets, whoever was going to win a series against the Lakers or Spurs (or even others) at that time. The Magic just making the playoffs in the East was not as impressive as what Duncan did when Manu & Parker were new & Robinson was on his last leg.

It's sad, but part of the reason relatively younger players such as T-Mac think like this is because the sports media since about 2015 has tried to convince us that the Duncan-led Spurs were a superteam. A superteam that couldn't ever win BTB and went through a finals appearance drought until they got a young Kawhi Leonard to offset an aging Duncan. Shaq is correct here. The Spurs were a very good team and very consistent team but despite all the credit Popovich used to get, it all hinged on Tim Duncan. His presence made them a 50+ win team every season. But they were never a superteam. Ever. It's just revisionism due largely to the GOAT debate over which some people want to dismiss LeBron's losses to the Spurs in 2007 (wherein LeBron played poorly and lost two very close games in Cleveland) and 2014 (wherein the Heat were absolutely in the series until Kawhi outplayed LeBron the last three games of the series). They weren't THAT good. Tony became an all star, but he was never a superstar. And Manu was a 6th man who could be clutch but perhaps would've been exposed on another team as the primary option. They're probably going to be hall of famers because they won 4 titles with Duncan, but some people (I think disingenuously) throw that term around too loosely when assessing how talented a team was; there are levels and not every hall of famer was a superstar caliber player (maybe they should've been to be allowed in, but that's NBA hall of fame standards for you). And to address T-Mac's specific point on the playoffs, maybe the Spurs without Duncan could still make the playoffs in the weak east of those days, but not the west.

TMac is one of my favorite players in the history of the sport but dude wasn't even top 3 for the MVP award in 2003. His team wasn't the 6th seed they were the 8th seed in the very weak eastern conference. For perspective the Rockets were the 9th seed in the west and didn't make the playoffs, but had a better record. Another thing; The western conference that year had 6 teams with at least 50 wins. The number 1 seed in the east only had 50 wins and were the only team with 50 wins in that conference. Tim Duncan was the driving force of a 60 win team in the west in one of the most competitive conferences we've ever seen. TMac is right that he absolutely carried that team to the playoffs, but let's not act like it was as great of a carry job like Iverson in 2001 or Russ and Harden in 2017. If TMac carried the Magic to the 1st seed in the east with the same stats then we would have a debate, but nah there's no debate on what actually happened.

Putting crazy numbers on bad teams is easier than in good teams because you gotta sacrifice. A good example is when Jordan had no help he put the craziest numbers of his career. Averaged like 37ppg, but when his teammates got better the numbers dropped. Does that mean that the 87 Jordan was better than 91? No
@THISISRISE2 жыл бұрын
That's a terrible example because those 37pts were based on not playing in the triangle. The triangle was about ball sharing. We saw the same from kobe when he averaged 35 one year. As soon and Phil came back his numbers dipped.
@kevinchavis27552 жыл бұрын
You can also argue it can tougher to put up numbers on a bad team because there the opponents can focus more on that 1 player to take them out of their impact for their team. Sometimes it’s easier and sometimes it’s tougher
@gamble7778882 жыл бұрын
I don't think you are making the point you think you're making. Firstly the best year of Jordan's career was the 35 ppg season the year after that 37 point season. There are metrics that measure that. The 91 season was better than the 37 point season but not better than the 35 point season, which is probably the single best individual season in the history of the NBA... the fact it did not result in a championship is due to the talent around Jordan. Point is PPG does not indicate anything, you are 100% right about that, but In T-Mac's case though the 02 season isn't just about PPG, every advanced metric for example Box/+-, VORP, PER, Win Shares etc. had him ranked as the most impactful player in the NBA that season. Offensively by a country mile, and also overall... now it's also completely true that metrics we have now are fantastic at tracking offene but poor at capturing defensive impact soyou can absolutely make the argument 100% that Tim's defensive impact puts him on top of McGrady. But to disregard Grady as putting up big numbers on a bad team doesn't hold any water. His impact on the team was enormous. That Magic team could have been challenging for worst record in NBA history without McGrady, and that's no exageration. They had several key rotation players that wouldn't have been on the roster of 90% of NBA teams that year,.
@gamble7778882 жыл бұрын
@@kevinchavis2755 The thing is what "numbers" are we talking about? PPG is a bad stat, everyone knows that. But McGrady's advanced stats were insane that year, better than anyones. Those stats descriminate between bad players that put up big numbers on bad teams and actual studs stuck in bad teams.

As a lifelong Spurs fan, I have to lay down some facts really quick when T-Mac is talking about 2003. Tony Parker averaged 15 and 5 but he was in his second season and wasn't an All-Star until 2006. Ginobili was in his first year and was averaging 8 ppg coming off the bench. The other starters that year? Bruce Bowen, Stephen Jackson and 37 year old David Robinson (Malik Rose was the sixth man). So when he says "the Spurs would have been a playoff team without Duncan because they had Parker and Ginobili", he's wrong. They probably wouldn't have even had a winning record and might have been a lottery team. In fact, the big MVP case for Duncan at the time was how he was managing to single-handedly carry this team of role players to 60 wins. The icing on the cake was in the playoffs when he outplayed Shaq 1v1 in the WCF when the Lakers were going for a 4-peat and then almost getting a quadruple double to clinch the chip. All Spurs did was throwing the ball down in the post to TD and all their plays started from there. Evaluating single playoff run with their whole career is ridiculous. I agree Duncan was a deserving MVP but I don't think it's a ridiculous argument to say T-Mac was the best player in the NBA that season and deserving of at least serious MVP consideration. Yes Duncan Spurs were not a great team around him, but they were studs compared to the T-Macs supporting cast. That's not to say that I don't think Duncan was the best all around player that year, but T-Mac put up 32 points in one of the lowest scoring eras in NBA history. Adjusted for pace it would have been around a 36 point in today's NBA (probably more if you also adjust his 3pt volume) and he led a team with the second best player being Drew Gooden and a 35 year old Darrell Armstrong to the playoffs and almost to the second round. You take T-Mac from that team and it's a safe bet they finish dead last in the east. You take Duncan out of that Spurs team and you potentially still have an eigth seed with Pop coaching that team, of course with Duncan they were a #1 seed and eventual champions so, again, not saying he wasn't deserving, just pointing out that it is debatable.

Going by T-mac's argument, particularly in 03, if Timmy was taken out of that team they're not going to make it to the playoffs. The was composed of an aging Robinson (final year), 2nd year Tony Parker, rookie Ginobili. Parker, who was their 2nd leading scorer averaged only 15.5 ppg, followed by Stephen Jackson 11.8 and Malik Rose with 10.8 per game. Timmy was averaging 23.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks. Robinson was helping but only 8 points, 7 rebounds and a block per game. The #9 seed Suns is an above 500 team. If Timmy was taken out, they won't make it.

Dead on, TD was carrying his 2003 Spurs iteration, dominating in the unbelievable West and also was the one that slain the Shaq-Kobe Lakers at their maximum height, their three-peat form. There's ignorance or underappreciating on Duncan so it's not known, and TMac was great, but going at Duncan's MVP is crazy.
@TheMilapMehta2 жыл бұрын
Spot on, thank you very much for pointing this out. T Mac was obviously a fan favorite (for good reason) and a lot of people claim because he got the scoring title in 03, that he should have gotten the MVP. People forget that Robinson was diminished heavily over his last 3 years and Tony and Manu took a few years before they became stars.

Let the record show: In 2003, Ginobili was a rookie (wasn't even a starter) and Parker was 20 years old. Duncan had win shares unmatched by anyone of the era beside Jordan and MVP Shaq.

@@luffymonkeyd.8175 That's not true. He became a full-time starter in 2004 with the departure of Stephen Jackson. The sixth-man experiment didn't start until the 2005 postseason. Then with a dearth of talent, Pop was forced to put Ginobili back into the starting lineup in 2011, where he earned his second all-star bid. Reply if you learned something.

Ahh no. The right player won the MVP in 2003. We have no idea what the Spurs would have been without Tim Duncan that season. Not only did he carry the offensive load, he was a defensive force as well. Tim Duncan in 2003 had the 3rd greatest playoff run by any player as ranked by ESPN. And they had rookie Manu Ginobili, a sophomore Tony Parker and a David Robinson who was going to retire. Not only that, they also beat the Lakers with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal in the second round.
