Considering that you will be (mostly) working alone, I would use the engine hoist method. I would not remove the engine entirely from the car ; just bring it Up enough to gain access to the areas needed. You are also going to need some body/paint/fender coverings OR remove some body panels! Engine hoists are available at harbor freight for about $ 170.00. All the best Sarah.
@dapro10305 жыл бұрын
You should pull the engine, Sarah. It will be easier to get the job done and you can check over the rest of the engine. I haven't watched this build from the beginning so I don't know if you have dealt with the " hose from hell" . I learned about it from an episode of "Wheeler Dealers " when they did an MR2. It's a little coolant hose that's buried in the engine and can only be changed by dropping the engine. It lasts up to 100000 miles and only cost about 20 bucks or so,so it would be wise to do that as well if you haven't already. I love the show and best of luck to you.

move to Australia, I have a near fully equipped home workshop! cringe, I know... try using a block of wood on your jack and a few rags on top to protect your sump & you should be able to raise and lower the motor enough to get at the shit on the front you need to, just make it as loose as possible in the mounts that don't need removing and remove the ones you need to before jacking. The loyota motors are pretty light so you should be ok using this method. Love your work sarah! great to see the effort you put in, god I would give nearly anything to have a woman like you in my life... :'(

An MR2 is our next purchase. Gen 2 just like yours. Running one of the larger Fiero clubs around we are looking at doing a combined club for our reasonable mid engine beauties. Something for the Fiero, MR2, and X1/9 among others. Great to see you working hard on your ride. As far as your question about removal or not, I have to say that removing will make the job simpler and give you a much better view of any other issues you may find.
@Britishdude15 жыл бұрын
Sarah, I've done this job twice on two different MR2s. Put a floor jack under the oil pan to support the engine. Undo the passenger side motor mount. Use the floor jack to raise and lower the engine as needed to get the motor mount bracket out. Use the floor jack to lower the engine to allow for enough clearance to remove the crank pulley past the frame rail. After you take the timing belt off, you'll have plenty of room to get to the oil pump. Unfortunately you'll also need to drop the oil pan which will likely require dropping the downpipe. If your's is in good shape and can be unbolted, you will not need to drop the crossmember. If you are worried about the floor jack failing, don't worry, the engine isn't going anywhere - it's still held in solidly by the 3 transmission mounts. I've stored cars like that overnight with no issues. The job sucks, but it sucks less than taking the engine out which you don't have to do . . .

Sarah before you pull the engine on the MR2 you should check the bolts. On timing covers some bolts go through into the oil galley and if not sealed those bolts will leak oil through the bolt threads pull those bolt clean the bolt and threads with a little brake or carb cleaner allow to dry and seal the bolt threads with Permatex2 and it will stop oil from leaking. I have had this problem before. I live in Casa Grande not far from you and have an engine hoist and all the things you need. you can contact me if you need further information.

I tried commenting on the last couple of mr2 videos. And email. Im going to facepalm if none of it gets through and you pull the engine. You keep ending up doing more work than needed and costing you stress. Just use the blue jack i saw in this video on your oil pan. Use a piece of wood or folded cardbord so you dont scratch or dent the pan. Unbolt passenger mount and lower or lift engine as needed. Remember this can be the oil pump or a cam seal or both. When bolting pump back on be sure to save the ones on the left for last to button up from bottom to top like a shirt or you may end up doing this all again. Be sure to remove upper plastic cover from timing belt to check cam seals. Alternator does fit between axle and crossmember, axle will flex when you push. Removing swaybar unnecessary and removal from top causes damage. Oil pump is less picky about debree than water pump, but be sure anyway that mating surfaces are clean and dry from even one hair or spec of sand. DANGER Dont jack up crossmember from center like you did in this video. I have seen this lead to jacks bending to side and letting car fall (Usually to the driver side). Even heavy jacks. Instead, place jack under lump on left or right side of crossmember. Never center. If i were local id happily get you on the road but typing is best i can do. Hope this gets to you this time.

Something that's been on my mind for a while now watching your videos: I am very much impressed by your work ethics! Every time something doesn't work out or breaks you just get in there again and fix it. I would have given up on at least one of the projects month ago! But you just keep putting in the work. Yes, you get frustrated and anxious too. But I thinks that's completely normal. I have two cars which are kind of basket cases and my main car which is due for a clutch change soon. Like VERY soon. The other day I tried to get my BMW road worthy after sitting for about 6 years and when I got it to the technical inspection I got the news that I had to put in another few days of work and a few hundred bucks just to get it on the road. And I'm not even talking about the saggy head liner or making the A/C working again or getting it to the painter to fix a few small issues or get nice wheels and suspension on it. My second project was really neglected for years too, even though this one was actually registered for all that time. It needs a new timing belt, there are oil and cooling leaks somewhere on the engine and the power steering pump is losing fluid as well and you can't simply buy a new one. Also it doesn't really idle and the powered windows only work half the time due to the switches being past their prime. I'm actually THIS close to just giving up on project cars, sell everything and buy myself a nice daily driver which I will just get to the shop whenever something's wrong. But it seems kinda boring. I probably just need to get my shit together and simply start fixing one issue after the other.

Nice! My comment last week was for you to take a good look at your oil pump. I hope you saw it. Now when you replace that pump you have to remember to shove as much grease as you can into it, almost like you were packing a bearing. The grease will replace the air and it will create good suction and help prime the pump.

Another great chapter in the life and times of Mr. Dos. Sarah, you can probably get to the oil pump by lowering the engine, with a hoist. At this point, you should probably just buy one, so you'll have it available when you need it. I'm sure you could find one at Harbor Freight. I got one from O'Reilly Auto Parts and it wasn't that expensive. Hey...it's cool to see Lil' Sarah again. You two are so cute together! Also...thanks for the update on Mr. Butters. The other option is to put the car on the Quick jacks, loosen everything to lower the powertrain/ cradle as one unit, take off wheels, lower car as much as possible, block subframe and raise car with lift. You won't get the car all the way off the engine, but you'd probably have enough clearance from the side to get at the front of the engine. I feel your pain, I have to replace the rear main seal on my Volvo, and it's definitely easiest to drop the whole powertrain down on the cradle. I'm just slowly getting the parts together to tackle a few other things at the same time, like a steering rack rebuild etc. May as well kill as many birds as I can with the powertrain out. It looks tight I don’t envy you on this one but with the down pipe and alternator out of the way it might make things easier even if you’re able to get better light or a better line of sight could make a big difference hard to tell on camera but with your great spirit and can do attitude I have no doubt you will give it your all.Trying is never a waste of time wasting time not trying that’s wasting time besides if it does have to come out it Hass to come out you’ll overcome that too and have fun it’s supposed to be fun put that blowoff valve on I hope it sounds as sweet as it looks can’t wait to hear it. I don’t need to ask if butter is doing better it’s obvious he is I’m glad john

Rent, or buy an engine hoist and try lifting the engine to access the bolts first. If that doesn't work then go for the removal. Good luck!

You can use a block of wood on your floor Jack to raise the engine by the oil pan. That will give you enough movement to access the covers.

I was going to suggest the same but I'm not familiar with the car and it's configuration as she is. It's a judgement call on if you want to just get it done with as little hassle as possible or a more convenient way.

Thanks for the early, or in my case late, post. It really brightened a rather long and painful day. Good luck

If you don’t have to move the engine very much you can put a jack with a block of wood on it and take the mounts loose and jack the engine up an down without completely pulling the engine

Ohhhhhhh MY GOSH, MR2 and road trip . . . I can't wait! I wish I lived down there, car culture seems great there, similar to when I lived in Florida. Late night taco run, so much fun.

Got to watch you on my new 86 inch tv, it’s almost like you are here lol. Sorry about dos but the engine must come out. It’s gonna be a pain but it will be worth it.

O the joys of MR2 "quick jobs" The alternator on my sons red gen 4 took us 2 hours with the 4 pot engine in...Now it has a V6 swap...its prob engine out 😆

Hey Sarah 106 deg and 21% humidity in Mesa today too! ... oh well ... sounds like your MR2 needs a handy little driod named "mR2Dr2" to drop in from another star system to help you out ...

Well go harbor freight purchase one there for the engine hoist or transmission jack. You can drop the subframe. I hope you can check it out there.

Some times you just need to step back do other things and clear the frustration of working on a pissy job. It makes you feel good after and one less thing you need todo later.

fabricate a drip shield to catch and redirect the drip so it does not go on the exhaust pipe but harmlessly goes on the ground.

You'll probably use an engine hoist again in the future. They're not really that expensive. It might be a good investment.

Get it while you have the Raptor. That way you can throw it in the bed of the truck and bring it home.

Make a sling for the small one out of p-cord, and send her down into the engine bay a la Mission Impossible for a closer look! Also, old speed parts make great Christmas tree ornaments.
