agreed, a death that doesn't meet any of these criteria, when written well, is really good at inducing feelings of *despair* in my opinion. in reality, people die all the time before getting closure where they want/need it, rarely on their own terms. this is even truer for people who die fighting others...

Peter Parker dying at the start to provide a clear motivation to miles, then uncle Aaron doing the same, also adding that his death caused Miles' dad to make the crucial reconnection with him that allowed him to control his powers. These deaths matter. In the same vein as how sex and violence shouldn't be used superfluously, death shouldn't either.

And then it turned out the world was okay with Superman and was sad when he died, so Pa Kent was wrong the whlle time and died for no reason.

A core value of Jonathan and Martha Kent is that they encourage Clark to use his powers to help people. But in this movie Jonathan tells Clark that he should have left those children die as oppose to reveal his powers. Can you picture aunt may or Alfred saying that to Peter or Bruce?
@wilhemalmodovar89104 жыл бұрын
@@priyanshuranjan3088 yes actually in rami’s Spider-Man aunt may literally looks Peter in the face and says, “You don’t owe the world a damn thing, you don’t HAVE to be or HAVE TO DO anything” this was the same message Pa Kent was trying to convey, but it didn’t land as well, because it was a little too gray.

@priyanshuranjan30884 жыл бұрын
@@wilhemalmodovar8910 dude I get your point but you didn't get mine. Mr Kent don't want to reveal the real identity of his son to the world because this could be really dangerous for him and we all know a father cares for their child at any cost but he should see those kids with the same perspective. If all of them had died that day then that would have been Jonathan's biggest mistake in his life as a father of his son because his son had learnt the lesson that no matter what the situation is, he shouldn't reveal his real identity to the world then how could he can be superman. The greatest hope of mankind. Best Superman stories focus on his humanity which makes us like him. He was raised on earth. He was raised by humans. And his full life of experience was of a human. He is a human first. A human who just so happens to be an alien too. Aunt may never meant to Peter that if anybody is dying he shouldn't save them. It was more about that Peter should concentrate on his own life as things were very bad for him. And Alfred said those words to Bruce because he knows the condition of Bruce that time. and The Gotham needs Batman to live for the next day. Batman's core value is that he values life above anything else because his world was shattered by a random act of violence And he wants to prevent anyone feeling that pain which he felt that day. You are free to say anything but imo the whole father son relationship of Jonathan and Clark never worked for me in man of steel. And sorry for my bad English.

@TheLithp3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what kind of bothers me about Tony's death (really Endgame as a whole) is how much it goes for big, cathartic moments over what actually makes sense. For example, Natasha also sacrificed her life to save the world. She gave just as much as Tony, but you wouldn't know it because she doesn't have the big, elaborate funeral where everyone feels sad for her. And it's easy, even understandable, to see why: The MCU was going for a tone of "This all started with Iron Man, so we're seeing an end of an era" & they didn't want that diluted. But does that actually make it right? Tony's death glosses over a lot to make him look like the biggest hero, & in the next movie we're going to see yet another problem caused by Tony's troubling private surveillance & weapons systems. True, he made the sacrifice play, but his legacy outside of that is, at best, a lot more complicated than the movie treats it. But the movie scene is designed to "hit people in the feels," not be realistic, fair to the characters, or explore themes. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but the artificial, commercial-like way the MCU treats big, emotional moments kinda bugs me sometimes. Maybe I'm kind of getting away from the point. I get that Quicksilver's death wasn't the best executed, but what Whedon was going for wasn't bad in principle. If you rewatch the movie, there's a clear attempt to get people to like the character so they really feel the tragedy when he dies. And it's clear he can dodge bullets, yes, but he's not in a situation where he needs to dodge bullets, others are being shot & he can't get to them in time while still escaping himself. This is not only shocking, it shows Quicksilver's character and becomes something to build off of for Wanda. To quote another KZbinr (to the best of my memory), "Death scenes aren't impactfull because look how sad everyone is, that makes me feel sad, it's because that character is now gone, any arc they were going through is suddenly cut short, and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces." This is, in principle if not execution, what Whedon was trying to do. With Tony, so far it's about 98% "look how sad this is!" There was kind of a subplot about Spider-Man maybe taking on his mantle, but that was more to introduce the movie's MacGuffin.

Killing a character with an unfinished arc could also work. It also makes a feeling, usually more realistic than a well grown and finished one. Perhaps it isn't satisfying to see your favourite character to die before they could achieve something, before they save the girl/world and anything between. But don't tell me you don't know someone who could not finish their big life goals. Someone who didn't fulfill THE DREAM. it isn't satisfying but it is realistic. But of course, maybe this was the perfect death in this franchise which targets a certain audience.

"If you're going to kill a character, the last thing you want to do is kill a character who hasn't completed their journey, or better yet leaves behind unanswerable questions" I disagree with this sentiment entirely because such a claim directly asserts that there is only one way you should write when writing is an expression of an individual's own character, journey, personality, and experiences. If someone wanted to write a story around say, the death of a loved one who left behind a lot of unanswered questions and how the characters in the story deal with answering those questions for themselves, then that can be good. Tony Stark's death is a different beast because his death is supposed to be a glorious one that celebrates the character and completes his character arc. But the failure to do that isn't a failure in writing. A character's purpose is to the narrative, and their death only needs to do what's necessary to inform that narrative in relation to the author's motive. That isn't to say that deliberate writing decisions are always good ones, but to argue that leaving loose ends with a character death is something that should be avoided is to misunderstand writing.
@ChrisPeteG3 жыл бұрын
Also....I think there is value in killing a character when it seems like they are right in the midst of their journey. People knock 'shock value'.....but death in reality doesn't always happen at meaningful times. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere when you are in mid-sentence. I think there is a harsh, brutal realism to THAT type of killing a character. It doesn't always get to complete their journey and reflect their values and mean something....sometimes people randomly get murdered and leave a lot of unfinished business and an incomplete journey.

This honestly makes me worried about how they're going to treat Black Panther's death in 2. Because if they aren't going to recast they will probably kill him offscreen or something then have some half baked funeral. That's my worry at least. I honestly wish they would recast because they could really do so much for T'Challa's character. Like he's one of Reed Richards best friends so I allways thought he would show up in a Fantastic 4 movie or something.

@@jay7tennis it's really not all that disrespectful. Recasting isn't dishonoring Chadwicks legacy. The man had done tons of amazing movies. An actor is more then the character he played and a character is more than the actor who played him. It would be more disrespectful if they recasted while he was still alive. Like for instant recasting Johnny Depp from the Amazing Beast movie.
@jay7tennis4 жыл бұрын
@@siothio while I agree that an actor is more than the characters they play I disagree that the characters are more than the actors who play them. In movies and shows, the characters are given life THROUGH the actors who portray them. Seeing another person in the character portrayed by Boseman would in some ways feel like a whole other character. Each actor brings something different to the characters they portray. It would be best to not let a new actor take away (for lack of better words) from what Boseman did for and in Black Panther. It’s best to let the character die with the one who portrayed him both for the immersion of the story and the legacy of the man.

I agree with most of the video. Great video actually! ^^ Though I can’t believe you said “Other franchises have troubles making character deaths matter” and then show Game of Thrones. (I’m talking about the good GoT, the seasons with Mr Martin) In my opinion Game of Thrones handles exceptionally deaths. Every death of a main character has weight and changes everyone’s fates. They matter AND are memorable. To name three examples: Ned Stark, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell... No, a fourth: even the baker’s boy’s death sets Arya in a path of revenge and hate against the Lannisters.

honestly, for me the most emotional death in the MCU has to be Yondu's in Guardians vol. 2. The moment itself, showing how much Yondu truly cares for Peter and how he was his real father, not Ego, then Peter's speech reaffirming that, and then finally the Ravagers coming to pay their respects... I don't think I've watched that movie a single time without crying. Yondu didn't go out saving the entire world like Tony did, and the whole world didn't mourn him after he died, but he sacrificed himself for the sake of his family, and I think it's just as resonant as Tony's death (if not even more so)

A character death shouldn't always leave you satisfied... If someone is killed before they tie up loose ends or before they get their hero moment, then maybe that's exactly the point of their death: making you feel frustrated and sad that they died before their time, that there were things they didn't get to do. Although perhaps they didn't handle Pietro's character all that well, it still doesn't mean that everyone has to go out in an "epic" way like iron man did. Death isn't always meaningful. Sometimes it's just sad.

I love how the whole world reacted to Tony’s death in contrast to Natasha. Nobody knew her, but all the people that mattered to her reacted, and that all she would need. Tony was a celebrity, a famous billionaire that will go down in history as their savior. Of course there is a huge difference between the ways these two are mourned, and it’s more meaningful than whatever people are all saying: ‘Natasha deserved more.’ She doesn’t care guys. She only cares about her family and doesn’t need any recognition of the world. It wouldn’t make sense, she’s a spy for goodness sake. It’s meaningful
