@@captnwinkle Agreed, I do like the poetic justice of Prometheus and Covenant and how things ended up coming full circle with AI / androids, our tools beat their tools and all6, a bit derivative, sure. There is a ton of backstory and future ramifications to explore with the Engineers, people screaming and getting munched on for eight to ten episodes straight isn't really going to cut it, especially for more than one season.

Damn right !! We DESERVE a series that goes back to the days where Alien / Aliens were seen as truly terrifying, the line with Bishop to Ripley in Aliens summed up that terror perfectly. " I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid". If an Alien species can strike fear into a synthetic lifeform, then you have a very real threat. I truly hope Noah Hawley can go back and infuse those classic elements back into an Alien series, we NEED to get back to what made it so good to start with.

Hmmm.. Well I have a little different take on the Alien universe. As a life-long SciFi fan, I have deeply enjoyed all of the installments of Alien movies and story telling. Some more so than others. I'm really pleased that Noah is talking about returning to a more old-school retro future look and feel, along with the suspense and horror from the first films.. So Great!! I'm all for it! I'll enjoy that too!! Thanks for the interesting update on the Alien TV series! Great News!!

The Xeno being created by the Engineers never really made sense. Refined and line-bred maybe, but even the there's a massive problem. They incorporate useful DNA from their 'incubators', so no two individuals will ever be exactly the same even if the host species is. All it takes is a new Queen born of a random host species, and everything goes out the window.

I think there's a Dark Horse comic book from the early 90's called "Alien Hive" with art by Kelley Jones that has some interesting science fiction ideas which can be used to expand the Alien lore in an intelligent way.

the introduction of the engineers was phenomenal, it was a deeper dive into this rich universe, its origins, and a much broader understanding of the creation myth. they expanded on the space jockey found in the first film and gave us so much more to explore, we were headed in the right direction the whole time and now were just burying our heads in the sand if we just do another scary monster movie in space. dumb.

If they're looking to reboot this great franchise, they should showcase the "COLONISTS" and their epic battle to survive the Alien attacks!
@anydaynow01
@anydaynow01 5 ай бұрын
That may be their angle, at least at first. There are a few really good audio dramas out there about the colonists from Aliens they can get material from. I do think it should be a series of mini series though. One or two seasons being about the colonists, another about the engineers, maybe even one with a Predator cameo. Innocent folks flailing and getting feasted on will only take the show so far.

Looking back at Alien now compared to when I first watched it roughly 40 years ago, I see the characters as much more relatable than the characters in the new films .... in Alien I see the cast as truckers in space, they were just regular folk grinding away at their day job making a living, some liked it some didn't but in the end it was a job .... in the new movies everyone is perfect looking, fit, and seemed like they were too good to be there. The cast looked like a bunch of folks from gated communities that looked like they could do whatever they wanted but had nothing better to do than go to another for shites and giggles .... pretty much the only movies I would consider canon by my standards are Alien, Aliens, and even though it has its flaws Alien 3.

While I like the idea of the Alien franchise returning to its roots, it's not enough for it to remain as people simply being picked off one by one by xenomorphs. There has to be deeper mysteries posed, making the series feel as if it's evolving toward some hidden goal or purpose. I always felt there should be some other extraterrestrial species involved, maybe one that is also beset by the xenos. Maybe humans and this other race could, at first, think the other is responsible for creating the xenos and each could start out as hostile toward the other until they realize they're both victims of the xenos. Maybe former adversaries could ally to dig deeper to discover the origins of the xenos. There's a variety of ways to make the series feel both old and new. We already know about the xenos, hopefully the producers create some new elements to explore. Either way, if the new series is going to attract my attention, there has to be something NEW about it.

@@liamx6636 Sorry, but I couldn't stand the Engineers. I felt they were a cop-out uber-humanization of the Space Jockey from the first ALIEN movie, best left as a mystery. And the Yautjas from PREDATOR should've been left to their own franchise and not involved with the Xenomorphs. I felt too much of that stuff was a recycled money-grab and that there should have been a new extraterrestrial species introduced, yet another intelligent non-human race to present a new mystery.

Alien suffers from the same issues many IP's are facing today; a lack of identity. If you look at all of the Alien films in their totality you begin to the see that the "theme" and "tone" are all over the place. While I enjoyed the last two Alien films, I found myself asking the question, "what was the point of these two films?". Someone needs to figure out what the Alien franchise is truly all about. Going back to the tone of the first two films would be a good starting point.

The point was to give an explanation to what happens in the 1979 movie, but mass audiences naturally will never go in the theatres to see people stomachs explode in high budget block busters no matter how deep it is. The incompetent executives listened to a toxic minority of old 40 years old cry babies and now they think it is word avoiding the scifi philosophical tone. The problems of this franchise started with James Cameron and his braindead action take, and budget increases for the last ridley scott movies.

I'm hoping for the best of both worlds. We get the tech / special effects and lore depth of the new movies with the atmosphere and personalized story telling of the originals. Shocked folks screaming and getting slashed can't carry an entire season, let alone a series. There are some good audio dramas out there, like a colonist prequel and the real Alien 3 story that would make for some good starter seasons, then they can dive into some Engineer lore with later seasons based on the comics.

I won't exactly get my hopes up, but I am curious now, at least. There were some fantastic Alien comics from Dark Horse Comics, back in the 90s especially, which usually had the xenomorph as a sort of catalyst to tell very human stories. The xenomorphs are fascinating and frightening because of that mystery that surrounds them and how deadly they are, but they don't much personality of their own. Nor should they, as that would rob them of that mystery. I hope Hawley's show captures some of what those old comics did, as they knew the xenomorph was usually best used as a story element, like a catalyst, in order to leverage that mystery and danger.

The problem with Prometheus and Covenant isn't that they explained things, it's that they deliberately DIDN'T explain things. Why did the Engineers create humanity, then decide to destroy it? Why did they create the Aliens? Where did they go? Are they still around? What about the planet David and Shaw found that Covenant takes place on, what was that, why were they there? The films loved raising questions, hated actually answering them. So, yeah, those films are still very much about "the unknown." It's always been pretty strongly implied that the Aliens were bioweapons, so to me that revelation was just a confirmation, and I think it works better than "they naturally evolved." There's too much about them that's too well-designed for lethality for them to have arisen naturally. And the implication, at least in the first film, was that the Aliens and the Engineers were ANCIENT, that the ship the Nostromo found had been crashed there for thousands of years at minimum, so these things could be buried anywhere. They're not "a bioweapon created half an hour ago." I'm excited for the new show, but I'm a bit hesitant about these specific comments. It feels like trying to overcorrect after criticisms of Prometheus and Covenant, throwing out the few good ideas for the sake of appeasing the vocal haters. That didn't work when the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy did it, I doubt it'll work now.

I love the idea of going back to a more lived in future aesthetic. The polish of the Prometheus vessel was cool, but even in it's own universe as a rich man's yacht seemed over the top. Space truckers are more relatable to me. But, the one thing I do not like is that Noah Hawley seems to eager to completely write off the bio-weapon theory for the Xenomorph's background. That idea has existed as long as the Big Chap, and I think throwing it away is a mistake. I see no reason BOTH theories could not exist simultaneously, and either keep them shrouded in mystery, or keep both ideas possible by subtle feeding of hints to both.

I may be alone in this, but I liked the attempts at the backstory; I wan to know more about the engineers. I also liked the Alien / Predator crossover concept, and the whole antarctic maya/inca proto civilization that did a novel and entertaining take on why those civilizations would have had human sacrifice and such, and why if there were Aliens on earth, why they'd be gone due to the Predator mini-nuke last laugh stuff. While I found Alien OK as a movie, it wasn't my favorite of the series. Aliens was better for my taste. I don't like to think about the 3rd... the setting was not my cup of tea. The fourth was interesting to a point, but when I looked into the comics and stuff that inspired the story and characters... I'd much rather have had the inspiration held to faithfully, rather than the movie that we got. Raised by Wolves had interesting ideas... it felt like there was something there... but they NEVER GOT THERE... it was like we never even made it to the inciting incident of that story... very unsatisfying. It's not even due to the early cancellation, that I'm not happy about... that just sealed the deal that we'd never learn what was really going on there... I hate when they leave stories unresolved like that...

I once read a paper online (haven't been able to find it since) which argued that Alien can just as easily be seen as a Lovecraftian story in the style of At the Mountains of Madness. I think this has always been part of the appeal of Alien--it is a masterpiece of dark horror and wonder. Prometheus and Covenant should be forgotten for their unimaginative retconning and overexplaining. As far as I'm concerned they have no place in this franchise, except perhaps as a fever dream Ash was having just before Ripley pulled the plug on his head.

Only complaint I've got about his speel is that the 'thousands of years more advanced' technology is comparing a civilian junker to the builders tech which is at least 100,000 years more advanced than human tech in alien... Also maybe it's just me but alien is alien and the prequels are a whole different genre in the same universe, but I get what he means... It's the fear of the unknown aspect, the prequels did what most prequels do... explain away head canon in a way that makes the original characters seem stupid for not knowing everything that was in the prequels, I'd say it goes far enough that resurrection should have known about the prequels since they were the military and should have had access to original records regarding the builders... Which would make you wonder why they are going after the xenomorphs and not the builder tech that made them.

To me there wouldn't have been a xenomorph home planet. Think about it, if there was a planet where they evolved, then every animal on that planet would've been used to plant xenomorph embryos in, so all of the other animals on the planet would be extinct. The xenomorphs always use every animal they come across to increase their numbers, so after a while all the animals on the planet would've been used to plant embryos, and for food, resulting in the xenomorphs going extinct at some point. So the story of the xenomorphs being created through experimentation seems to be a more plausible explanation.

I agree with all he says, but it won't be easy. Alien fans all want something different, and if they don't get it, they turn into haters. "It's not good if Ripley is not in the film ". "It's not good if the original xenomorph isn't in the film" etc. Every director has his own touch and so does the writer. You will never be able to recreate the original. Maybe just leave it and make a new franchise not based on Giger aestetics but more like Beksinsky. That would be cool.

What made the first two instalments of the franchise so great was the era they were made in, you will never recapture that. Star Wars, the same, Indiana Jones, the same, Blade Runner, the same, every decent franchise from that era has failed miserably to be brought up to date with reboots. Original Ideas require effort and talent. That said it would be long over due if it was a decent addition to the franchise.

Let me guess: spaceship crashlands on an unknown planet with black goo / alien eggs / facehuggers on it where the crew is killed one by one and only a female crew member survives. The End.

Why? They're cheesy, vapid, undeveloped, predictable, and fodder. None of that is good.

Fabulous, I think to expand on the terror of Aliens is to expand the strange world that is very unexplainable. Cancerous of H R Giiger's view of what is organic and what is not. The creepiness of it all.

The first Alien is the only film that is horror out of the two, Aliens was more action and not remotely scary. The later films failed because they tried emulating James Cameron's Aliens and focused on making the franchise more mainstream and accessible to all (PG13) audiences.

When they went with the CGI alien, the franchise started to go downhill. Are they gonna do a CGI alien or go back to the classic approach?

That's kind of what the showrunner is saying IMO. Pretty cool focus to have I think.

Some of the audio dramas are quite good too. They even have the real Alien 3 story which is head and shoulders above the movie!

@@maxmercer1931 Yep, that's the one, I would recommend listening to the audible original, although it got some mixed reviews I though they did a decent job of bringing his story to life.

Putting my bets down now: Its going to suck so hard that we'll never get meaningful investment in the Alien franchise again.

Based on Noah Hawley’s previous projects as writer/showrunner (4 seasons of Fargo, etc) the Alien franchise is in good hands. Go watch the latest season of Fargo, it’s fantastic!
