“People can’t imagine a father doing this with his son.” Indeed. I’d even add that people also can’t imagine what it’s like to be raised in a home that enabled such a thing. This wasn’t just a sexual abuse case, it was a mental abuse case carried by a father that literally everyone that came into contact with was terrified of. The mother enabled it. From experience, not only does the SA mess with your mind, the fact that the Mom allowed it might be the hardest part to get over. It shifts your understanding of reality, love, and trust.

@Vanessa Monroe yes, that testimony was so raw. When the one brother apologized to doing the same thing to his younger brother as had been done to him, you had to be quite hardened to not feel the raw emotion there. I think people believed the narrative that they were just evil spoiled brats. Even though many employees and other relatives came forward in the media to say what a tyrant Jose was, the media kept highlighting stories of the spending sprees and such. If it hadn’t been for the money, the boys may have stood a chance

To those who are pointing out that the brothers were of legal age to move out of the home: any type of abuse includes a type of mind control where the abuser convinces the victim they would never survive without them. If these brothers were abused from a young age to their legal adulthood, it absolutely makes sense to me why they’d still be in the home with great reluctance to leave. It’s the same concept of saying, “why don’t they just leave?” regarding an abused spouse. I am all for a second trial, or release based on time served.

Anyone in their right mind knows that if you murder someone for whatever reason besides self defense, you're found guilty in a court of law, it's life in prison. You don't get off for time served or the circumstances of abuse. It's like putting guns and knives in the hands of victims and its ok if you brutally murder them? It's not ok. You contact authorities, your family members, adult friends, clergy, your Dr, your neighbor, anyone who would listen. The back story to the brothers behavior prior to the murders is telling. They should serve out their sentences for what they were found guilty in the court of law for, the same as anyone else who chose to weapon up and blow away an abuser. Regardless of "the times", it's immoral and illegal to take someone else's life if not defending your own.

A lot of people believed them at the time, and a lot of people still do. The first trial resulted in a mistrial because the jurors could not agree to convict or to acquit. During the second trial, the judge limited the evidence that the defense could admit, which allowed the state to minimize the allegations of abuse, and they were ultimately successfully convicted. Many people were shocked by this, as their testimonies of abuse were captivating and moving.

People might wonder why the boys didn't just leave home and go on their own, but it's not that simple. I lived with my parents until I was 24 because they used controlling tactics to keep me there. Whenever I expressed interest in leaving, my father would say, "Your poor mother! She'll be heartbroken!" which immediately caused me to feel like a selfish son, and my mother would say, "Don't you love me anymore?" or similar comments. My mother was a stay at home mother and homemaker and her kids were ALL she had. I agree. A year ago I'd read about the new evidence in this case. Before that, I just went with the official narrative that the brothers m urdered for money. I had not heard otherwise. I completely believe the boys were molested and abused. I think they should be released and receive the inheritance from their monster father and enabler mother, too. They should have only served a maximum of 12 years. They've had their entire life stolen from them. If I lived closer I would go visit them in prison. So sad.

A good friend of mine recently shared that her biological father had been raping her oldest sister since she was 8-16. Her mother was out of town a lot on business( she had a big corporate job) and the dad took care of them. She remembered her dad calling the sister down late at night in a voice that sounded as if she was in trouble. She said she would fall asleep and not remember when she returned to their room. One day she went downstairs to find out what her sister had done only to see her sister completely naked sitting on the floor. When they finally told her mother, her mother accused the daughter of “seducing her husband “. My friends sister ended up running away and later ended up in a mental hospital. She is still not right to this day. Yes, people can be sick and abuse their own natural children.

The PTSD that exists from being constantly in fear for your life makes you a paranoid, hypersensitive, adult that has trouble trusting people and forming close bonds with other people, among other things like nightmares, panic attacks, being quick to label people with only good intentions as phonies, etc. People who've never experienced this can have a hard time understanding that this kind of abuse does not end when the victim leaves the relationship or is in a position to do something even when the physical abuse isn't happening.

I wonder why the cousin never came forward, whether the letter was found or not. As long as the cousin read it, he could've come to their trial and testified that he did get a letter stating the abuse took place, whether or not he had the actual letter. The fact that their cousin never came forward and testified in their defense is telling. I don't buy it.

Both Erik and Lyle were badly abused by BOTH their Mom and Dad. In my opinion I do believe both Erik and Lyle should be set free from prison. They both will forever have to live with their choice to murder their parents and I never agreed with the sentence they both received. They have been through enough. People who did NOT survive what they did will probably never understand what it is like to be horrifically abused and how it changes, affects and the constant terror you are in, yet I do because I to survived horrific abuse by my parents. Sadly so often children let alone adults are not believed if they do speak up. Being a survivor of abuse it is natural to want the person or people who abused you to stop them so they can no longer abuse. And sadly sometimes the survivor murders their abuser. The trauma is so deep and horrific. I support their release and I believe if given their freedom they both would do many great things to help other’s. Anybody that judges them or anybody that has suffered, survived abuse and believes the victims should not be freed ask yourself what you would do if somebody raped you or somebody you loved and inflicted such horrific abuse on you or a loved one. Regardless both have to live with so much life long trauma.

They murdered their parents, there’s millions of people who were abused and didn’t murder their abuser. Let’s say the dad was abusing him, why kill the mom? They planned this and carried it out. Should they do life? Maybe not but is every case of someone who killed their abuser going to be relooked at now? Why should these two be a special case?
