Time to try a new wood finish for external projects. With some products having limitations on horizontal surfaces I am trying a couple of oils that have been recommended to us over the years. This test is Owatrol textrol.
Product Link - amzn.to/2VoO0il
In addition, I will be creating a controlled test of a few products and monitoring over the coming months and years, more on that in a future video.

This is pretty much the stuff and brand we use on wooden boats in Norway. We do it wet-on-wet until the wood doesn't soak up any more oil, then wipe off the excess. There's also a topcoat of the same brand that makes it hold up even better over time. Owatrol D1(oil) and D2 (topcoat).

I’ve had the exact problem on bench seats with Osmo, been looking for something else, may give this a try as it seems to give a nice finish!

I've used osmo decking oil and it's been great on horizontal surfaces where rain and snow does sit. Lasts 2-3 years before needing recoat but it is our main walkway so gets lots of use. No flaking so easy to recoat with just a wash down first.

Yeah decking oil is much more likely to hold fine, this one is for decking and joinery so should behave the same.

07:15 At the risk of being annoying, it’s called oxalic acid, not oxcilic acid. Anyway, I’ve had decent results on my garden bench with Dulux Trade Yacht Varnish. It’s pricey though but it does go far. Oil does look better than varnish I think though, but this stuff supposedly lasts 3 years.

Hi, am getting red cedar wood fence panels in my back yard, do you think it needs to be sanded, before I apply the oil. I mean it is required for brand new installation as there is no wear or outdoor exposure yet. Any advice appreciated.

Hello Last July I had partial silicone based white rendering in between Cedar cladding done at the front of my house. I have had the osmo oil put onto the cedar cladding when it rained my white render is getting stained is it the osmo oil with the tint causing the stain or the cedar itself. Also I was advised not to do anything by the builder like oil or painting the cedar as it has its own natural oils. is that correct especially as the cladding is long term and being a west facing all the element of the weather hit the front. Can you advise if the osmo uv protection oil ( clear satin) could have reacted with the cedar in order for my redder to get stained when the rain fell.

Working for an Architects practice on social housing refurbishment projects in London, Osmo products were often specified for treating hardwood handrails etc. As I recall it was usually the black/dark brown stuff. Domestic garden furniture is best protected by putting it in a shed when you've finished the BBQing ;-)

Hi, I am looking to apply a finish / coating to a plywood plyometric box for protection as it might be used outside, but need something that won’t leave a slippery or slick finish, as the box will be used for jumping on during exercise (with potentially damp shoes etc). Does anyone have a recommendation of something that might be suitable? Thanks

Question... Is the issue from water, from sun, or from both? I just built some "outdoor" furniture (a sofa and 2 chairs, and in a few days, a coffee table). They are under a covered porch. They won't have direct rain, but will get the occasional splash in heavy rain. So, rain/water isn't too much of an issue. My main concern is sun. They will get about 4 to 6 hours of direct sun. I finished with 3 coats of the OSMO UV protection oil. I have ordered the Blacktail Studios N3 Ceramic coating to apply to the horizontal services (mostly the arm rests and the coffee table top for the coffee table I am about to make). Blacktail studios says the Ceramic coating is good for outdoors too.

The finish is beautiful. My husband built is a beautiful white table 2 years ago and we finished it with spar marine finish. It has done beautiful job of protecting our table. I see your chicken and rabbits can rome free in your back yard. Dont you have predators that prey on these animals? We here in Ohio could never let's those animals rome anytime due to hawks, falcons, eagles, raccoons, and coyotes.

NEWSFLASH: Tim completes project that we can all emulate !! Just finished giving my south facing timber clad wall (inspired by yours) 2 coats of that very product after a lot of online research. Surprised by how much the 'clear' tinted the timber (more than I hoped) but we'll see how it weathers. Owatrol do lots of timber treatments and their Irish agents Igoe Paints are very helpful.

Something to remember: teak oil isn’t made from teak. It is any number of combinations of other oils and solvents, with varying additives. While they may make claims about UV resistance, some are better than others (like all products).

I am a little disappointed with you, buying furniture that you are quite capable to make yourself. Having said that I understand why you bought against making your own, the amount of time it would have taken against to cost of the item, in these post covid times you would be challenged to buy the wood for the amount you paid for the furniture.
