Steve, I want you to know that as I've had to experience adulthood, I found myself growing apart from my parents. It's not much, but every week I see my dad at some point and we both enjoy watching Hat Picks and Dang It's every week. He loves your content as I slowly dragged him into Hockey fandom and I just want to say I appreciate you just existing, doing this for everyone's entertainment. It's the definition of the little things that you really come to treasure and you made it so I have a small thing to share with my dad every week and still maintain a bond even though we're both older and have adult lives. Thank you. Also . . . Yeah, my Dad said "Tend the Goal!" and he's getting some Hat Picks and Dang It's merch for his birthday.

That ref should be sent back to ref school for that garbage call. Even if he thought the contact between the two is the reason Getzlaf fell(and he did fall, he wasn't tripped), you can't penalize a goalie for trying to make a save. No goalie in the NHL expects a player with the puck to just skate past the net with it. Refs should also be required to answer questions after games like coaches and players are
@jkliao6486
@jkliao6486 3 жыл бұрын
@@seantaylor2683 I don't think that's true though. There has been countless example where goalies can be called tripping when they poke checked the puck, same applies to pad saves as well. Even though this is a garbage call in itself, what you said is simply not true.

On that Raanta/Lomberg situation. Anyone that says that the intention for the forward is not to steamroll the keepers in those sorts of situations has either never played hockey or is just lying. Those situations are a golden opportunity for any player to take out the opposition keeper without any real consequences because there is a built-in excuse, I was going for the puck. Bull, the puck is secondary and there is no way in hell a player doesn't see the keeper coming out. Hockey players literally train their vision(split vision) to be able to notice players coming out of nowhere and for some reason you don't notice a player coming straight at you? F off! When playing junior hockey our coaches said that if a keeper leaves their net, they are fair game and that you should take every opportunity to tackle them. Even our GK coach(who was also the GK coach for the Sweden U16) told us to do it and if the puck is under a keeper, to just shove them into the goal. In short, they told us to take every opportunity to make the life of a keeper absolute hell. Lomberg knew exactly what he was doing. Raanta should have just gone low and taken out his legs ala Hasek.

If it's tastefully done, that could be funny. Refs falling into the bench, getting squished between two players, having an arm up for 3 minutes on a delayed call, etc. Probably a few funny mistakes or missed calls too. This is a call that forced me to quit writing for The Hockey Writers due to a conflict of interest, since their editors accused the league of game-fixing. I assure you that your beef is with Darnell Nurse, with a splash of Ryan Kesler, not the league. Kelsler was outside of the crease, hit by Nurse into the crease and onto his stomach. Thus, since the defending team was the reason the player was there in the first place, goaltender interference does not apply. However, Kesler is expected to make a substantial effort to remove himself from the crease, which he did. Unfortunately, Nurse continued to hold him down there and an experienced Kesler accidentally on purposed from there. Its not a fun one for Oilers fans, but its correct.

there will never be a logical argument for why play isn't blown dead when a goalie's skate blade comes off. They blow play dead when a helmet comes off, despite the fact that the puck rarely hits the helmet, yet when a goalie's movement is severely limited, nothing. It's been happening for at least a couple years and often leads to goals. No excuse at this point
@raininggiraffes7087

For the same reason the play isn't blown dead when somebody's stick breaks. Helmet coming off of a goalie makes sense because that is a safety issue. A skate blade coming off a goalie's skate is not.

Safety vs. Advantage. The refs have a certain responsibility to ensure a reasonable degree of player safety, so they'll stop the game to rectify the safety concern. The refs do not have a responsibility to remove a disadvantage to one team, if that disadvantage comes as a result of that team's own shoddy equipment, careless use, or sheer bad luck. If the offensive team didn't break the rules, and no player is in (greater) danger of harm, then the defence just has to deal with it.

Skinner's misplay is not fair. Goalies play the puck ever game multiple times a game. Yes, that play is a "dang it" but lets add the context that Skinner was the best Oiler in that game.

4:20 - Even Getzlaf was like "I don't know man." 5:12 - Steve look at the last replay, he loses an edge after he brushes his skate. The kick save was unrelated to him losing his edge.

I'm wondering if it's cause the Canes would have targeted Lomberg so hard that the refs were trying to protect him.

I think hockey could be a lot more interesting if the NHL kind of adopted the lacrosse rule for a goalies crease where within the goalies crease you can’t touch them but the moment a goalie come out of the crease he’s fair game

That's essentially a rule in some leagues. You're considered off side if you're in the paint. I'm just glad the rule is out from the 90s in which if any part of you was in the paint and a goal was scored, it was a no-goal. It was a horrible rule.

Not sure if this was caught on video but we saw this at the game. In the second period of the Blues vs Preds game around 5:30 left in the period Kyrou's stick breaks and he leaves it on the ice. The linesman then picks up one piece and tosses it in the bench. Then the other piece he picks up but there isn't a gap to throw the stick so he keeps trying to offer it to Blues players and no one even acknowledges it and he's left holding it for a few moments until he tosses it at the empty spot at the end of the bench. Not sure if it's totally dangit worthy but I don't think I've seen that before and we couldn't stop laughing.

Be warned this is basically a novel length breakdown Alright, lets start the Lomberg breakdown by setting this precedent: GOALTENDERS ARE NOT FAIR GAME JUST BECAUSE THEY LEAVE THE CREASE. Understood? I will first quote the rulebook here verbatim: "NHL Rulebook, Rule 42 - Charging: 42.1: Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on any player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner" "For the purposes of this rule "Charging" shall be defined as the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice." "A minor, major or a major and a game misconduct shall be imposed on a player who charges a goalkeeper while the goalkeeper is within his goal crease." "A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease area. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper. However, incidental contact, at the discretion of the Referee, will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact." And there in that last paragraph is where the "Referees Discretion" comes into play, did Lomberg make a reasonable effort to avoid contact with Raanta? In my eyes, yes he absolutely did. He attempts to stop before contact, and as you can pretty clearly see the contact is initiated as a result of a race for the puck. Lomberg is NOT required to let up and allow Raanta to play the puck unimpeded. Based on this there should be no penalty at all on the play let alone a Major and Game Misconduct. What gets me is, HOW THE HELL DID THEY REVIEW IT AND STILL CALL A MAJOR???

I was a bit weary of him playing the puck earlier in the game, and it turns out I was right to be concerned. I was yelling “TEND THE GOAL” at my TV when that happened. This was the game winning goal too :/

Not a penalty, same as the one in Toronto. Both skater and goalie going for the same puck in as Steve said "neutral territory." Goalie is playing the puck way outside his crese, you can not expect the skater to let him play the puck. 50/50 play unfortunately both times the goalie got hurt and a penalty was called. The goalie is at fault in my opinion he left his crese to make a ballsy play and unfortunately he got hit.

Honestly I’m not surprised the Rangers-Panthers game weren’t on here. Panarin’s disallowed goal was same idea as Blues-Kings, Strome goes to the net, he is in the crease but you clearly see Elblad pushing him to keep him in the crease so Knight can’t make the save. Then later big scramble in front of the Rangers net, Hornqvist clear as day pushes Shesterkin down via his face and there was no goalie interference or review for the goal. Rangers still ended up winning but yikes
