I think people view the name Nintendo itself more as the brand name, obviously the opposite of Playstation and Xbox where the company name and the products they put out are a bit more divided when you think about their consoles. I suppose that way of thinking is only solidified in peoples minds with how many of their consoles have the name 'Nintendo' in the systems actual official name. NES, SNES, N64, NGC, NDS. I think the Wii and Wii U are the only home consoles that didn't have Nintendo 'officially' as part of the products name. I mean, people do sometimes say "the Sony Playstation", but the product name is officially just Playstation.

I'd take it a step further and say that many people do not know that the Playstation and XBox consoles are made by Sony and Microsoft respectively, they think that they are each their own companies. I even knew knew someone that actually thought all the consoles were made by Nintendo.

He's right though. Nintendo's made tons of mistakes over the years. Virtual Boy, N64 using cartridges while PS1 and Sega Saturn used CDs, changing Dinosaur Planet into Star Fox Adventures, not making the Wii an HD console, Amiibo shortages, and the list goes on.

Nintendo started gimmicks because they thought that power and performance weren't "cool" anymore, mostly due to the ps2s success as a DVD player rather than a console. When wii was released everyone started the Nintendo doomsday shit because the only people that played wii were casuals. I personally think they've gotten their shit together, and that the nx will be a more GameCube like system with some cool new features.

I am a passionate Nintendo fan and I love the Wii u. But I can agree that the marketing for the Wii U sucked, while I first watched the Wii u promo trailer I thought it was an accessory too like most people. Especially because they dubbed it the new controller. I'm happy Nintendo realized they're mistakes and hopefully markets the NX better.

I'm a huge "gamer" (hate that word) and when the Wii U was announced I legitimately thought that it was an extension to the Wii. It wasn't until like a month after the announcement, I read a Game Informer magazine and I finally found out it was a standalone console lmao. Great marketing Nintendo A+.

They've added the Wiifit game board, the Wiimote Gun extensions, the Wii Balance Board, the Wii Music set, etc. At E3, they didn't show the console whatsoever at their press conference. All they showed was the Gamepad and what it could do. And much like the other extensions I've mentioned before, they referred to this product as "Wii" with an additional subtitle. Honestly, they shot themselves in the foot based on the name alone. If they had just simply changed the name and actually showed the console at the press conference, there would've been a lot less confusion.

Federation Force didn't even start out as a Metroid game. It's more understandable for those who didn't have access, and never looked on the internet. Nintendo already dropped the Wii brand, managed to hide the NX's secret, and converge both their handheld and console development teams to efficiently produce many quality games for the NX"s Launch as it appears that Nintendo will have one main focus this generation. Since the NX's reveal is probably around the corner I believe this to be the best time to be a Nintendo fan as they are correcting all of their mistakes, and could possibly release a super successful console next year!

well the NX seems to be a hybrid console that you could connect to the tv for big screen play like a normal game such as xbox or playstation but can also be taken on the go as a handheld and considering Nintendo dominates the handheld area with the 3ds beating out sony's handhelds every time this could be a good thing.

Halo 5 is actually really good for a Halo game. The classic Halo formula isn't good enough in today's current market but the additions Halo 5 has that avoid ruining the arena experience are enough to keep it relevant. The real issue is competitive gamers generally aren't flocking towards FPS anymore. The only one that has any real following is Counter Strike.

I remember seeing the wii u in store when it was released thinking it was a new peripheral for the wii. I didn't know what it was until late 2013/early 2014 when I went to a friend's dorm at college. So yeah, it was marketed horribly if not at all. I don't even remember seeing an ad for it on tv.

honestly, to me, when I heard the name wii u for the first time, the u just seemed... awesome. different. unique. it intrigued me. I wasnt confused. I was excited. and now I own a wii u, it is perfect. the gamepad has no flaws, the games are amazing and unique, the graphics are beautiful, but there are four things I need for maximum enjoyment- legend if zelda gamepad case, wii u pro controller, gamecube controller, gamecube adapter.

Okay, as a huge Nintendo fan (but not stupid), here's my opinion: Okay, the marketing was complete shit. However, I'd say the Wii U has a couple advantages, making it, in my opinion at least, the 2nd best gaming system (behind PC master race). Before you shut me down, let me explain. Okay, the Wii U has the worst specs, I'm not disagreeing. The issue I have is that the PC does everything the XBox or PS4 does, but better. Yes, there are those exclusives (I love Dead Rising), but the vast majority of games are also on PC, making the consoles irrelevant. The Wii U is unique; almost every game is exclusive, considering it's Nintendo. Since them and the PC share almost no games (not considering emulators), I'd say the Wii U is a worthwhile choice, at least to be done before the others. Again, I'm not trying to be blind, the XBox and PS4 are great too, I just think they should take a backseat.

I think part of what contributed to the bad launch of the Wii U was the Wii motion plus accessory, as that was the the largest accessory for the Wii and some games required it for playing. Thus when the commercials for the Wii U only showed the Gamepad, it seemed like it was just another big accessory.

Main reason I bought a WII U was those first party games and my Wii died so I needed something to replace it.

I love Nintendo, and even returned my launch PS4 to get a WiiU instead, but here's the thing. Back in 2011, I worked at Fry's Electronics. I passed by the video games and saw a promo video of the WiiU. AND I THOUGHT THE TABLET PAD WAS AN ADD ON FOR THE REGULAR WII!!! I thought this for months until a worker in the department had to explain to me that it was a separate console. If I worked every day and thought it was an accessory add-on, then what would the average consumer think? I was very upset to learn that it was a new console and was only slightly more powerful than the PS3 and X360. I knew the next PS and XB consoles would be light years ahead. Very disappointing. But the WiiU had games I actually wanted to play.

Year 1 NX games: Zelda Breath of the Wild A New Metroid ( A 2D metroid would suffice) A 3D Mario (Preferably a sequel to 64, or a new Galaxy game) Pikmin 4 A New IP Some JRPGs Castlevania/Bloodstained 2nd and 3rd party support - try to actually get a Rayman exclusive this time maybe A new Pokemon - like a proper 3D pokemon - no more easy to produce gameboy titles with minor changes each year - release a fully fledged 3D pokemon adventure with online components. Possibly an MMO (This game is the most requested game in history! Any other company wouid have made it by now instead of trickling out what is basically the same game every year for 2 decades) An E-shop with a bunch of Nes/Snes.N64/Gamecube/Wii titles - handhelds too Wii U Ports - not too many - but heavy hitters like Splatoon, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Maker - all with extra NX exclusive content and all the DLC packs included --- DO all that in YEAR 1 --- Basically don't take 4 years to do it like you did with the Wii U, that was utterly pathetic.

I can remember when they showed off the console and controller but it took about a month after release for me to realise the wii u came out. I hope the nx is amazing and more importantly I hope the games that come out exclusively for it are amazing.

I am a hardcore Nintendo fan, but i'm not delusional enough to say that they are perfect. They made mistakes with the Wii U, chief among them was the marketing of the console. They did nothing to differentiate their system from the Wii, reporters even left the E3 conference confused about what they just saw. I would like to add though, that this is not the first time a Nintendo executive has said this. Former VP of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt did a phone unterview during E3 this year and bssically said the exact same thinf when asked about what lessons they had learned from the failure of the Wii U.

Nintendo is just back peddling. I think Nintendo fucked up by having the "Wii" name with the Wii U. They fucked themselves up by calling it something so similar. Hell, they could have just called it like Wii 2 like how Sony calls their game consoles. Then they fucked up by not even putting out their big, first party, exclusive games at launch and steadily put out sequels and new entries on a regular basis. Nintendo did fuck up quite heavy with the Wii U. Hopefully they don't fuck up with the NX. If they fuck up with the NX then well, people won't give a shit about Nintendo anymore.

Everyone forgets but the 3DS had an even worse launch than Wii U, where Iwata took a pay cut, but they lowered the price of it, started releasing some great games, gave launch owners like myself 20 free games with the "ambassador system", and the thing did decent- won't reach GBA's level meaning it's still going to be their lowest selling handheld, but why they didn't do those same things with Wii U just boggles the mind. If they would have dropped the price, and started putting more games on it, it'd be at least in the 20's now instead of the low-teens...

I feel like the way to make people see its potential is to create games that let them learn the new hardware slowly while directly incentivizing its use. The DS took things slowly in teaching gamers how to make use of a touch screen and it eventually hosted the cult classic The World Ends With You, a hardcore game relying entirely upon the dual screen/touch mechanics. When a difficult game making full use of the hardware's uniqueness came for the WiiU in the form of Starfox, people recoiled at the challenge because the growing pains for the mechanics outweighed the possible fun of using them. I think if the WiiU had the support that the DS had, slowly teaching gamers of a new and uncomfortable mechanic, it would have done much better. As it is, no developers save for Nintendo really saw the potential to evolve gameplay in the WiiU, and when Nintendo pulled out the big guns in a hail Mary, it backfired hard.

it makes my think of the star trek movies. There are a lot of fans of star trek who will go see every movie that comes out, but that fan base just isn't big enough to carry 100 million dollar film. to make the movies profitable they need to go "mainstream" (ie more action, less sci-fi). The Wii u wasnt marketted to the mainstream, and that's it only sold 10,000,000. that. 10,000,000 is the core fan base, but little else.
