NISSAN INFINITI FX35 P0024 OR P0014 DIAGNOSIS & FIX

She's back! Some of you guys might remember this 2009 Infiniti FX35 w/ a 3.5l V6 engine. I recently posted a video with this truck because it had a check engine light and trouble code P0024 Exhaust Valve Timing Performance Bank 2. In the previous video I explained that it was very likely we had a faulty Exhaust magnetic retarder, because there was a TSB from Nissan about this problem. However, after finding out the part was going to cost over $1,000 us dollars. The owner was hesitant to fix it. Well they brought it back and they want me to fix it, but am I confident enough in my diagnosis to take the backlash if replacing this part does not fix the problem. The simple answer is "NO". So, in today's video we are going to perform as many tests as we can in order to feel as confident as possible to condemn this part.

One thing I like about you is your modesty, you do not try and give the impression you are a 'know all', OK you sometimes make mistakes, who doesn't, but you are always honest enough to hold your hands up and admit to it. I suspect others making these kinds of videos are the complete opposite. Keep up the good work Eric.

Grear and fantastic job Eric ! Bank 1 erratic reading, it's related to wear and tear on clutch system causing slippage, no wonder it's tried to catch up rpm on engagement process, even though visually it looked OK, doesn't meant it's OK, it's microm size worn out which was matter, micron size worn out, is enough to screwed everything up on hi precision parts, no wonder manual said to replace both of them since both of them will worn out approx. at the same mileage, My warm regards from Indonesia, keep up with goof works ! 👍👍

The disparity between what you have to gain if your call is correct and what you have to lose if your call is incorrect is really unacceptable. The customer universally thinks they are getting a raw deal in the general sense but in a case like this you are the one taking all the risk with little reward for being correct. Sometimes it's tough being in business.

Just a thought.I looks like the spikes going up and down or the scope pattern is not catching up. I wonder if the gear is slipping because of the surface condition ? It would have been good to clean the gear surface up and recheck it. Maybe that has nothing to do with it. Nice video.

That magnet _is_ a 4 pin connector. It's like an electric window motor, electric seat motor, or an old Datsun/Nissan engine part, a Idle Control, used a vibrating (cycling) magnet on a bivalve. This bidirectional floating magnet precisely controls it's device- a valve, cam, etc.

And replace the gaskets that are inside behind the chain

What should the intake and exhaust cam positions be? My intakes at idle are as follows. One is at 16° and the other is at 18°. both at idle. The exhaust cams are right around zero at idle to be exact one is zero and the other one fluctuates between zero and negative one. I started out with P0011, P0021, P0014 and P0024 codes. Replaced both magnet retarder covers with magnets and solenoids $2800 for both did the exhaust timing relearn and that eliminated, the 11 and 21 codes but the 14 and 24 codes keep coming back anybody have ideas?

I might be wrong because you are saying the problem went away, but in my opinion those readings are not supposed to follow each other completely. ECU determines control of the magnets based on the O2 sensor of that particular bank, but as u know O2 sensor is reading exhaust gases for 3 cylinders combined. The readings for bank a will not be the same as readings for bank b which is why they are controlled separately. I have the same issue but I want think that mine originates from the cam system itself. I neglected oil changes and I think that's the cause. Before the prob I noticed those magnets would activate when I hit 1900rpm always, I would hear a click each time I reach 1900 but now the click is gone. Also I did an engine flush and got the clicks for a while then the stopped again, so in my case I think someone is stuck somewhere inside the engine. Any thoughts are welcome.

@simonilett998
@simonilett998 Жыл бұрын
@@florenbaron7111 I'm not sure what's available in terms of software, I know nothing about software or computers etc. If there is some sort of software available, you would also need a way to connect to the car's obd2 port. The best method to do a cam crank relearn is with a scan tool that has bi-directional controls which has a cam crank relearn function. However, you could try this only to find the code might still come back, since the codes you have I believe relate more than likely to a timing chain stretch issue.

👍, great video, I have a 2011 EX35 that is having the same issue, don’t have a fancy scan tool, but get a p0014 and p0024, I clear it and after 20 to 30 miles it lights the check engine light, I did a basic cam sensor check with an O scope and see the nice square pulses, also checked the vvt solenoid ohm reading reads about 10 ohms and i can actuate it with the ignition ON, it was pretty clean and also I keep my oil clean, but did an engine flush and new oil, but the code keeps coming back, so makes me believe I may have a defective magnetic adv./retarder in the cover as you showed in your video… Only thing I can add is that I didn’t see if you tested the magnet itself to see if it works or pops our to engage to the cam plate, Unless I missed it. Thanks

Eric super repair. IMHO, That "Donut" is a dumb component. It's only a coil with a soldered connector. There's 3 possible failures I can think of. Broken solder connection that's intermittent/jittery. Contamination by metal filings in neglected oil changes. Lastly physical damage on the face deep enough to touch the coil wiring. Perform an ohms test new Vs old. Perform ohms test while wiggling connections in/out. Remove Donut and clean throughly. Use a magnifying glass to inspect for physical damage. My concern is more with that VVT Solenoid sticking. With age, the pistons inside start sticking and the Orings bypassing oil. With neglected engines,the input screens may be contaminated to the point that its performance is sluggish/erratic. Sometimes back flushing the VVT while exercising it can bring some temporary success.
@jovangrbic97
@jovangrbic97 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, that coil can either be working, open, or perhaps have a few windings shorted, reducing resistance. But if it ohmed out similar to the new part, it just can't be an issue with the magnet, leaving the solenoid as the only other replaced part in that assembly.

Are you still having this problem. I had the same problem and I found a cure. The camshaft position sensors need to be changed, they are the ones responsible for that. I changed bank one and the prob went away 4 years now. Mine would stall while braking for traffic lights. Believe me this is the issue

I think there's a bit of cherry-picking when certain brands cost a certain amount of to repair . The Lexus LS400 brake actuator problem from 08 up until 2013 and maybe father. Yet, you see people glossing over that in the comments like it's worth the fixing and that part is well over a thousand. Not to mention the suspension issues. Still they will gloss over those extreme high cost for repairs as if it's worth it hear it.
