I LOVE your videos! Your calm, professional demeanor is so different from the other low-carb videos I've seen. I have already gone to your website and gotten the list of foods to eat on low-carb and it's been a great reminder. I've tried to do low carb for many years (due to some serious dietary allergies to starches) but I still have a hard time losing that last 10 pounds. The tips in this video are super! Thank you for using science and common sense in your presentations. I've just subscribed to this channel. (Not sure what took me so long.)

I needed to hear this today. I was doing well for almost 40 days but today I had to look away from brownies and candy someone brought in work. Usually I'm ok and didn't take any, but my stomach growled for the first time in a while and I really wanted to taste brownies. It passed though but I had thought "You can do better tomorrow" Then I said "You can do better today". I'm planning a cheat day on my son's birthday in a week, that will be enough.

@@luisez.5888 oh yes, definitely! I went low-carb because I got a diagnosis from my doctor that I am prediabetic (I’m 33, so that’s pretty scary). I have a family history of diabetes (I lost my mother to it) and for years I had been very particular about what I eat (cut off sugar, complex carbs, meat except poultry) and consistent exercise. But I got into grad school and with the pandemic, I quickly fell off the wagon. The diagnosis set me back on track, and I know I’ll be doing this all my life, but I’m happy to, if it would have me more extra years to enjoy life with my family! Thank you so much!

I cant worry about weightloss. The scale rarely goes down. It takes a long time for my weight to go down. I have learned to measure myself. When the measurements decrease like they do, I know fat loss is happening and that is my goal. To lose the post menopause abdominal fat since I started HRT again. It will happen. It will just take patience and time. 😁

One thing for people to consider is, if you find yourself wandering the kitchen looking for something (usually sweet) to eat, just stop and drink a glass of cool water, taking your time and enjoying it. Then, see if you're still craving something to eat after that. Most of the time, you'll find that you're just thirsty: for many of us, our mind has been conditioned us to sense that thirst as hunger.

@bonnie7073
@bonnie7073 3 жыл бұрын
Maura, I understand your struggle. I have been hypothyroid for over 3 decades. My doctors didn't diagnose me for a few years. Then, they under-medicated for years. They gave me low calorie, low fat diets. Keto is helping me lose weight and feel better. Read all food labels, checking for carbs and all forms of sugar. I eat 25 grams or less of carbs each day (no cheat days). I take vitamin and mineral supplements. As Dr Becky says, medical issues, such as hypothyroidism, may make weight loss slower. I have been doing keto for 4 months and my weight loss has been slow, but I won't give up. Change doctors if needed; educate your doctor about keto. Keep it up and you will feel better.

All the calories on the keto diet is insane I ended up getting so much cellulite from this high fat low carb diet...I now do 16/8 or 20/4 intermittent fasting...keep my carbs around 80g for the day. I eat nutrient dense food like a 4 egg omelette with a load of Broccoli and green beans which sustains me. The only fruits I do consume are apples and bananas..an apple on my morning toast with 2 poached eggs or in my oats. My calories are around 1500 but I always find myself in a calorie deficit which is a bonus for me...thank you for a great channel

Your diet doesn't sound like ketogenics. 80g of carbs a day is a lot! How are you losing weight on that amount? Net carbs should be 20-40g a day for weight loss. Also fruit is not Keto friendly; you can eat berries but that's about it. Oats are high carb. Dr. Eric Berg has a lot of really good videos on Keto, he can give good directions, too.

After a year and a half closely tracked keto (I made a database in which I enter everything I eat. Traveling... not possible, but at home very easy.) Here's what I think might be interesting. I let the pandemic become an excuse for being lazy, not much exercise at all - my weight went up over 2020. So exercise is critical. Carbs. I still have that junkie's itch to constantly snack, that hasn't gone away. Hunger? Totally knocked back into perspective. I can miss an entire day of eating and not be much bothered. (I used to get the hangry's if I fasted overnight for a 10 am blood draw.) Cravings. I tried 45 day 'low carb diet in the past but without raising my fats. I had amazing dreams about cookies. I would recommend everyone try this the same way Timothy Leary used to advocate LSD. I thought I missed crusty baguettes, corn chips, popcorn. I've had each and meh, they just don't have the draw they used to. The one thing I did miss and have added back into my keto diet, is whole oats. Not cooked just in a bowl or more commonly mixed in with my eggs. About 2-3 times a week I'll have 1/4 cup. Well within keto. I ate a big bowl of hot air popcorn every evening for 20 years, but I don't miss it. Scales. My digital scale repeated day after day the exact same weight. I was suspicious of its accuracy and usefulness. So I bought two more to compare them. For the first week they consistently varied by 0.2 lbs (no problem at all) but after two weeks the cheaper one started reading 8-10 lbs under the other two. I think two weeks of minimal daily used drew down the voltage on the batteries and could no longer keep its parameters. The $72 one is difficult to read but seems very consistent and my older one same thing. And they both often read the exact same weight multiple days in a row. I suspect they aren't as accurate as their 0.2 lb increments, (When I hold various weights in my hand. 10 lb weights I get around 10 pounds change in reading. 1/2 pound? (0.5) sometimes no change at all. They're good enough, but I know that real precision would really help the positive feedback loop that is essential to developing good practices. And yes my 'sweet tooth' is still alive and kicking ..me. I know what addicts say when after decades of sobriety they say that they still think about heroin or booze every day. I went to a high tea, which is a lot of sugar. I got the sugar high (more like whiplash) - instead of accepting that this was just 'part of eating sweets,' I didn't like it at all.
@brendas1346
@brendas1346 3 жыл бұрын
I like "cut the sweetness". I never really thought of it that way but certainly makes sense. The only thing I've noticed when cutting sugar though is sometimes I get a little shaky and I'll need a little shot of sugar from something. Is there a way around this issue?

Did you try it? I did and it was first thing since I lost weight at 50, (60 now) that worked. I keep carbs 50-75 most days and cheat days more. Just the lower carbs and not snacking all day helped a lot and after 2 wks, i slept better. Not perfect ,that's gone but some days, 6 hours straight! ; )

Don’t give up - or give in to your frustration!! We all have been there. Think of your goal. Think of why you started this journey to heal. Whenever the stresses in my life seem like they are winning, I tell myself “Not today.” Picture yourself at your goal and how incredible that feels. See yourself there, and keep that picture in your mind to push all the negative stuff put of the way. The longer you resist caving in, the greater the victory over that moment will feel. Say not this hour, then nope, not this afternoon. Keep pushing the creep away until you can look back and say, “ I did it today - I won that one!!!” The next day will be just a bit easier, because you know you did it yesterday for the whole day. I believe in you and know you can do it!!!

It all sounds good but I tried keto for about 6 weeks and wound up passing out along side a walking trail after only 2 miles. I normally hike for miles and this was just a walk. I got dizzy, tunnel vision, my legs stopped working, sick, I could barely move. I Finally got back to the car going 100ft at a time. I was plenty hydrated but my body just shut down. It took a couple of months of eating normal and slowly testing my limits before I felt OK with going on hikes again. Maybe this is great for some people but if you're regularly active I'd be REALLY careful. If I had been 8 miles out in the desert like I normally am, that could have ended badly.

Will, do you take any supplements or a liquid trace mineral electrolyte replacement like Endure? I have been low Carb/Keto for many years now, and I am a runner. I average 4-6 miles daily except Sunday, and include 2 races per month during racing season and have had no troubles. I know each of our bodies are different and react differently. I am thinking your body was not fully adapted yet, and it sounds like a possible electrolyte imbalance to me.
@Scorpionwitch
@Scorpionwitch 3 жыл бұрын
@@cathyengen7094 I take a daily multi-vitamin and a magnesium supplement. I work outdoors in AZ and am very careful to stay hydrated and regularly add electrolytes. I never went thru the "keto flu" though I did just feel a little off. A keto friend told me I wasn't eating enough fat. I usually eat pretty low fat, I just always have, so maybe I just didn't have anything to burn for fuel. I can normally do an 8 - 10 mile desert hike here with no problem so shutting down on a 2 mile walk was definitely not right.
@cathyengen7094
@cathyengen7094 3 жыл бұрын
@@Scorpionwitch our bodies are so amazing, aren’t they!! Your friend could be right. A higher good fat intake is part of Keto, because that is our fuel source when we are in ketosis, which helps our bodies convert from a sugar/carb burner to a fat burner. I was just so worried about you passing out in the desert when you are alone - that is SUPER dangerous. Where I live it would be the same for me in the winter when it is 20 or 30 below zero!! Maybe with not having enough fuel you also had heat stroke? That would account for how awful you felt after you recovered and the time it took you to fully recover and feel well again.

Which is why I question toothpaste and mouthwash while intermittent fasting or fasting. For some stupid reason they all insist on putting artificial sweeteners in them. And so many people will say well you don't swallow it..Well swallowing it has nothing to do with it. As soon as it goes on your tongue it causes this reaction. I've started using hydrogen peroxide and/or dry brush.

@cathyengen7094 3 жыл бұрын
Annie, I am low carb/Keto with intermittent fasting and incorporate longer fasts. Just because you have eliminated sugar and lower carbs, doesn’t mean you can eat whatever and however much you want. I do watch my portions and my total calories for the day. I am in maintenance and keep my numbers where they are to stay where I am at. It is a new lifestyle not a diet for me. It is how I am for the rest of my life. Food for me is fuel to be healthy and to be able to do the things I love.

My bg sky rockets sometimes up to 145 even when ive just eaten strictly keto- 2 fried eggs, 2 strips of bacon and 2 tbs of butter, or sometimes skyrockets in the morning after fasting beyond 12 hours. After 1 week of giving up my last 2 tsp of monk fruit, my 2 diet cokes, and reducing caloric intake by 500cal a day, increasing my walking and swimming times...im up 4 lbs this week. I must be a freak. This is impossible. Do i just have to quit eating altogether, i guess?

I've heard people say it's keto and also that it's not. I believe it does have sucrolose, which is a different version of sugar but it's not digested the same way. It probably depends on how your body processes it. If you are eating well, and the treat isn't changing your weight loss it is fine. Make sure that you aren't eating it too close to when you go to bed.

2 cup of cream! While I believe we are all on own own paths, I do love a good diet Cherry Coke, it seems to me you are not satiated from the main portion of your meal. At one point I was eating a keto chocolate mug cake each night. That was fine, I was still getting healthy. Then I started Eating a better quality of meat, eggs, fats and that craving went away. These days sometimes I end my eating with some pecans and a piece of dark chocolate. It does take time. Do you do intermittent fasting? Do you drink coffee with some cream, MCT oil? Blessings.
