You don't punish people by punishing there kids, especially when not necessary. I understand when it is necessary, but most of the time it is not. The kids have relatives they can be sent to. There is no reason to send them to detention centers, they didn't do anything wrong, their parent did(it is usually only one of them). Imagine you got arrested(whether you did it or not), and while you were waiting for court, they took your kids and put them in juvenile hall for your potential crimes. Would you be OK with that?

Of course it was, the laws that are creating this problem have been around for 2 decades. It's not a false defense, I didn't actually believe Trump at first but took a second look because I know how unreasonable the media has been lately. And yes you're right, there is no federal mandating the separation of children and parents, the only problem is that isn't what's happening now. The change to the zero tolerance policy means that any adult crossing the border without permission is criminally prosecuted, which makes sense because it's a direct violation of our immigration laws. So with current federal immigration law, if you're being criminally prosecuted you are taken to jail where a hearing is set up. We have another federal law that prevents us from throwing the kids in jail with the adults they came with, which not every time is their actually parent/guardian, they are sent to a different office to try to find any relatives the children have here in the states. The separation of children from their parents is not a policy change, it's the consequence of breaking federal immigration law. Trump is doing his job in enforcing the law and ludicrous people are comparing him to Hitler. What change do you want to see? Do you want him to instruct DHS to just ignore that problem like the last 3 admins did? Personally that doesn't seem very responsible.
