Utter nonsense. Take those nostalgia blinders off and just have a listen to whats around. Nick Cave has been kicking ass for decades. Last Dinner Party are incredible. Aldous Harding is a marvel. The list goes on. Do yourself a favour and open your ears. And i remember the '80s well. Phil was just more commercial chart crap at the time. At least i and everyone i was at school with thought so. We had your opinion of his ouvre then as you do of others stuff now.

This song is about a young man obsessed with a prostitute who is not interested in him. He has an Oedipal fixation on her, and insists on calling her "Mama." It is based on a book Phil Collins read called The Moon's A Balloon, by David Niven.

@@docsavage8640 I disagree..this song has Phil's fingerprints all over it. Its a lo-fi drum loop track from Phil's Linn Drum machine (we all know Phil LOVES his drum machines)...with a fairly simple keyboard riff on top. Now..Tony definitely added a lil spice to it, for sure..but that's a Phil chord progression. This song also has an eerie similar keyboard feel like "I Don't Care Anymore" and "I Can Hear Through These Walls" has as well.

I’ve heard and enjoyed a smattering of Genesis’ music from the early 1970s to the point of Mr. Collins’ departure. Ever since I first heard this song in this video on MTV back in 1983, it has been my hands-down favorite. It’s not of any style for which the band is known, but they created a perfect storm of a song: Mr. Banks’ haunting keyboard passages and riffs, Mr. Rutherford’s subdued yet roaring guitar chords and tremolo effects, Mr. Collins’ intense and punctuative drumming, and Mr. Collins’ heart-rending vocals and sinister vocalizations. I consider this song to be the band’s magnum opus.
