Did you catch Trumps press conference today where he specifically addressed the cost of medications and that the PBMs are a problem. Also met with head of Pfizer and Eli Lilly over the weekend and had discussions about why we pay more for drugs than other countries. I’m hopeful Elon will be a good influence too.

Frankly, the idea of a once-yearly GLP-1 TERRIFIES me. 😱 🙀 “So Bob, how are those really terrible side-effects going?” “Doc says I should start feeling better by next spring.” 🤦🏼‍♂️

@cloakster

@@edsmale It’s more than a very few. If everyone had the option to titrate up SLOW, it would be a different story. But between insurance companies ‘playing doctor’ (“Titrate up every 4 weeks or we won’t cover!”), and the many doctors who think rapid titration is THE way to go… …yeah, we don’t live in that world yet. 🌎
@edsmale
@edsmale Ай бұрын
@cloakster it is, statistically speaking, very few. The vast majority of "severe" side effects are from titrating FASTER then every 4 weeks. There are scores of videos from people titrating after 2 weeks. Or starting at higher then lowest dose, or skipping a dose altogether, then complaining about side effects. Or not changing their eating habits then complaining after eating their bucket of KFC. If you take out those who are not following the dose or time titration schedule, or continue to force feed themselves even when not hungry, or refuse the diet and lifestyle changes mandated by these medications (that the hunger and impulse control allow you to do), then then numbers of "severe" effects are indeed very small. Non severe side effects that are 100% manageable are also not severe. Someone who successfully lost weight to a healthy target and are on maintenance are obviously not severe side effects either. So a yearly shot would not apply to those with severe side effects, would certainly not be used as a starter dose, but would be great for those on long term stable maintenance

@Ed To quote JAMA: “The dropout rate due to inability to tolerate adverse events or other reasons was 7% in the STEP 1 trial and 13.5% in the STEP 8 trial over 68 weeks.” And FWIW, when I look at the clinical trial breakdowns, a dropout rate of around 7 percent due to adverse effects is pretty common. But have seen as low as 4 percent, and as high as 17 percent. 😢 In any case, these rates are not ‘very rare’. And were achieved on an ‘every 4 weeks’ titration schedule. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I do agree that an even faster titration schedule would be even MORE problematic. But, plenty of ppl on even good old-fashioned (and too fast) 4-week titration do report problems. It is something Novo and Lilly can and should fix. 😕

Christopher! I laughed so much at your Twinkie comment. In my early 20s I worked at a Twinkie factory…. It’s ALL corn syrup… the cake the filling ! They were all powders into which we mixed giant barrels of corn syrup… oh boy I was young and not obese yet.. and poor. I ate so much of that crap for free there.

RFK isn't against GLP-1's as much a he is FOR PREVENTION beginning at an early age. He is not suggesting that obese people & related issues/diabetics just "diet and exercise"....that is a misinterpretation of his stance that is being widely propagated in the media. What he wants to focus on (w/ re diet and exercise) is EDUCATING KIDS and cutting out the hidden crap/ingredients in Big Food *BEFORE* they develop these related health issues so that obesity/co-morbidities stop becoming an epidemic in the country. He has flat out stated that GLP-1's "have their place". While he *does* stress the importance of lifestyle changes for EVERYONE, he has never come out to say it is the ONLY treatment for those who ALREADY suffer from obesity/diabetes...rather, IN ADDITION to whatever treatments one's physician deems necessary to regain one's health. His focus w/ regard to ALL chronic illness' is to prevent them from occurring in the first place...NOT to withhold treatment for those who already suffer from them.

@stregarapunzel well, we shall see. See, by experimenting with the American public, along with continued attacks on Obama care, until they finally succeed in dropping millions off of insurance. Me personally, I don't take health advice from people that look and sound like him, and the rest of the bronzed clown car occupants

@@stregarapunzel Ok, thanks for the info but the AMA has acknowledged "Obesity" as a DISEASE, not a weakness of one's character or education. To teach kids to exercise and diet is always a great thing to do but it's not going to prevent the ("disease of obesity" which is how the AMA puts it). That would almost be like teaching kids to diet and exercise in order to prevent cancer. You know what I mean?

Mochi sent me an email about making a med request today. I just got a delivery last week. I think they are trying to get rid of inventory by the 19th before they are shut down. I hope not, but if they are allowed to stay in business any longer the price may go back up. I’m tempted to order but man it’s Christmas and I’m getting low on funds 🙁 I have a couple days to think about it.

I believe that Vital Pursuit is actually Life Cuisine repackaged. It does beg the question re.: processed foods and the role they play in our overall health equation. I am a big fan of these quick meals, however, the amount of sodium and chemicals they contain surely play a part in inflammatory processes and the weight issue in the U.S. vs. abroad. Just my observations…as a frozen food junkie 😬

@ better than a candy bar yes. As in 1 spoon of rat poison is better than two. But in no way are they healthy. That’s not even delving into the ingredient panel. True, no eats perfect nor should they. That is set up for failure. But these things should be acknowledged as a “cheat” meal, to satisfy a junk food craving. Rarely. Not as any sort of actual meal to seek out.
