First guy is 100% in the right. My car, my rule. Regardless of danger or no danger, the one time you don’t wear your seatbelt is the one time you get into accident or get pulled over. As a passenger in my car, I am responsible for your safety on the road, and if you won’t follow my rules in my car, I’m not giving you a ride. The guy probably could’ve just politely said, “Hey guys, put your seatbelts on please. Rule of my car, I can’t drive if my passengers aren’t belted in.” Maybe that would’ve helped, maybe not. And also, as a just someone riding in a car, always put your seatbelt on. It literally takes one second.

Car hit a bump going over a hill, lost control and hit a tree. My friend went through the windshield from the back seat. I miss him and still think about him. If you're a driver, you have a RESPONSIBILITY to everyone in that car to ensure their safety. Enforcing the seatbelt rule is an act of compassion. It's a healthy boundary. The guy paying rent to his parents started paying at 16 and said he had been paying it for four years. He has a successful small company and he's graduating college at 18. He clearly was maturing too fast for his parents to keep up with emotionally and they're clearly conflicted in how to treat him with pushing more adult responsibilities on him early while simultaneously thinking they have control over his autonomy after he's already a legal adult. I think it's more disrespectful for his parents to shame him for celebrating spring break with his peers before they all graduate. Adults have boundaries and other adults need to respect them. He'll have a lot more time to visit family, but he only has one more spring break left with his friends before they all go on to kickstart their own lives. I hope this makes sense to other people.

Next thing I know I heard a loud noise and my vision went black. I felt my body leave the seat, only to come to an abrupt stop followed by me coming back to rest in my seat. Vision still blacked out I could feel the vehicle still moving but no longer in a straight line and it was decelerating. Once the vehicle came to a complete stop my vision returned to me and only from the pain in my head and the spidered windshield did I realize what had happened. Turns out a guy was driving drunk with his headlights off because he didn’t have far to go to get home and was trying to go unnoticed and get home fast as the police report said he was doing 73 when he rear ended us! Some of these reminded me of a situation where my mom and grandma tried to make me feel like an a$$hole when clearly they were. I was 20yo, I just spent the last several months in a sinkhole of depression as I lived with my Dad as was rapidly dying from cancer that invaded his pituitary, then the rest of his body within months. He was diagnosed late July 2019, and died April 2020. He couldn't sleep much from the pain, and often would moan from the pain. I stayed with him in a studio apartment with only a curtain to separate our areas. It got to the point that I lost all grasp of any sort of routine. I'd be up all night with him, then sleep half the day, etc. Anyway, after his death, we had a memorial for friends and family. My mom, who had divorced my Dad when I was 4, came with my Grandmother, her mom, to support me. FTR, they did not give me any advance notice, they just showed up. They nice and supportive upon arrival, and they stayed for the memorial ceremony. I just wanted to be alone after that, I didn't want to think or talk about anything to anyone. I did my best, though, to still be pleasant, of course. I was talking to a good friend of my Dad's that I knew well when my mom pulled me aside. She said they were going back to the hotel. I acknowledged it as I assumed it was just informational, but then they lingered and said they wanted me to come back with them to spend time with them. I told them I appreciated the offer and sentiment, but I was just not in the mood for that. I suggested we maybe get dinner later, though, so we could chat and spend some time together. Then they both, starting with my Grandmother, practically jumped on me, telling me they came for me and I should spend time with them while they're there. I reminded them they came on their own without asking me, and they shouldn't just expect me to abandon whatever I may have had planned just so I can spend time with them. This isn't about them. They left in a huff, and guilted me that if I wasn't going back with them, then they were just going to go ahead and check out of the hotel and drive back home. They lived about 4 hours away. I told them that's fine, their choice, and thanks for coming. It took a few years after that for me even want to talk to them again.

In the uk, when you have a passenger in the car, the driver has responsibility over everyone in the vehicle. It is against the law for a driver to operate a vehicle if the passenger hasn't got the seat belt on and can actually be fined if caught disobeying this law. In the event of a crash, even if not at fault, you can be liable for any injuries sustained to the passengers that are found not wearing a seat belt

The first scenario happened to guys I knew in high school after a party. One guy, sober, left a party and another friend asked if they could get a ride. Half passed out in the back seat, they got into an accident and the guy went through the windshield and was in a coma for about a month. His insurance company sued the drivers insurance, and one of the stipulations was that he didn’t have the passenger put their seatbelt on, which would have caused significantly less injury. He won a TON of money too.

2:31 It actually can. It doesn't matter how short the distance, how safe the road seems, there is a possibility to crash when something sudden happens and if you have someone sitting behind you, next to you, they become your death if not buckled in. I've heard of a police officer recently, that someone died, because they had their tool box in the back of their van, had to hit the brakes and had that tool box kill him, because it hit him through the back of the van. People next and behind you can literally bash you in from behind and the side, you die then.

Growing up in the country, seatbelts are usually treated as optional bc backroads dont really have threats other than a rogue possum or maybe a rare deer running into my car. I get oompa's response bc I spent most of my childhood in the country. No seatbelts on dirtbikes or in truckbeds, so why wear seatbelts in the car? But id rather be buckled and there be no crash than be unbuckled and get launched throught the windshield, the glass shredding my body as i exit the hole in the glass like a fetus exiting the womb, getting my limbs crushed under the car as it rolls on top of me or if the car doesnt crush me, my skin gets shredded further on the pavement and my bones get broken upon impact, multiple concussions and other possible traumatic injuries i cant fathom at this time. And if i survive, the emergency room bills will make me wish i died. Or i could just shut up, buckle up, thank the driver for a free ride, and drive without a seatbelt in my own car or in my parent's car or whatever. I mean, what are they gonna do when they get on the plane? Its a federal law to obey the rules on the plane, so when they say buckle up, you buckle up. If they try to be rebellious little punks on a plane, they get to meet the feds at the next airport. I have sensory issues, and i dont like how seatbelts scratch my neck, but i (usually) like my skin on my body, so I'd like to just wear a seatbelt. They may have a right to their own bodies but laws are laws and if youre getting a free ride from a family friend and they say that the only thing you have to do to get a free ride is wear a seatbelt... wear a seatbelt? Tldr: idk i feel like they're privileged and whiny kids who will only do things their way, and OP was responsible for looking out for everyone's safety.

This was the early 1970’s, so I credit his survival to the fact that cars were still made out of metal and similar in size to a yacht. He also had the dubious habit of picking up hitchhikers. One time he was driving, my mom was in the passenger seat and he saw a hitchhiker. My mom asked him to not pick up this guy, but he did anyway. And a minute into driving, the guy puts a knife to my mom’s neck from the backseat and starts making demands and asking him to drive him somewhere “or else”. So he did what he did best. He drove like a total dipshit maniac so fast and so frighteningly, while his wife had a knife at her throat until the would be carjacker begged him to stop and jumped out of the car.

State of Montana has signs all over saying "buckle up for safety, buckle up its the law." And yes, most drives will be safe, 99.9% of the time you will be safe and not need that seatbelt, but even if you're the safest driver in the world, you can still get into an accident. It's called an accident for a reason.

Also I saw an argument about "freedom" specifically "freedom to make dumb choices." They said its oppressive to have laws around seatbelts. But freedom of choice is not freedom from consequences.
