I was also retrenched in 2020 during covid, even though I was working in the healthcare sector. There was so much uncertainty in the job market. The constant rejections take a toll on one's self worth and mental health. Totally relatable when he talked about rewriting the cv so many times. I was extremely lucky to find another job at the end of that yr, which became a page turner and being able to switch from a sunset industry to a sunrise industry. I just wanna encourage everyone who is in a difficult situation, to hang in there and keep the faith. I cldnt see the silver lining of my circumstances at the start. Looking back, the retrenchment had forced me to rethink my directions and challenge myself to adapt. Sometimes, u can only join the dots looking back, and crisis often presents opportunity...

3 years ago I knew my co is going to restructure their operations. Before I was retrenched last year, I aggressively invested to build my passive income. When the pink slip came, I had enough to cover my expenses and take my time to do some soul searching and plan for my next step. I am not embarrassed to tell people i am jobless during this CNY. I am glad I had time to prepare and embrace this new chapter in my life.

As a 40 year old, I relate to this but one should not limit ourselves inside a box. There is always opportunities to build oneself with doing passionate projects that can become a side hustle or freelancer. The employability market is gonna change every time and everyone need to evolve in some ways to sustain ourselves beyond a career. Don't listen to the naysayers or people who look down on you based on age etc. Get upskill, learn new things and innovate! I think every adult is capable of doing something that is fulfilling and rewarding.

I lost my job 6 years ago at the age of 53. The first several years of jobless, I was okay, because I had time to look after my old mother and travelled around. Due to Covid, I have stayed home for more than two years for doing nothing. I am very depressed. I am now a jobless person before receiving the pension. It is hard to be mentally fit.

I was in the same situation and almost the same age too. Being unemployed when you are in your 40s can be really scary esp when the job market and employers requirements are changing so much. But I thank the retrenchment which got me to understand that my job is making me really depressed and the dependency on the monthly paycheck is not helping me to work on changing the situation. I went back to school too and all the grants the government is throwing out really helps. All I can say is despite how bad the situation seems to be in other people's eyes, it has been the best break I have ever taken. Sometimes, life throws you a curve to actually help you out.

@@karebu2 it’s the mentality, even with a job, the office chair you are sitting on is never yours to begin with and any day it must be returned, never get too comfortable with a job. It’s also where having multiple streams of income is a bigger priority than gaining validation from others. Having a job is not a reason to stop learning, growing. Having a job is by no means a definition of one’s identity or value. Having a job never meant that this is who you are and what you deserve. Similarly, losing a job in a retrenchment is never personal. Not being employed for various reasons does not make one any lesser. There is a difference between “paycheck is important” vs “what others think of me in my job or me without a job”

It is dangerous to equate the entirety of self-worth with your career performance and economic productivity. Capitalistic society has dug deep into our psyche's to the point where many of us associate how well we're doing in our careers and how much we're earning to how worthy we are as people. Career life can be a fulfilling and amazing part of our lives, but let's not make it such that when it doesn't go the way we expect, we crumble and see ourselves as worthless.

But some employers can be very choosy. I met with 2 guys and listened to their stories. You can be selected for a job application. And you could be going for 3 rounds of interview in the same company. And they will tell you that you are of the shortlisted candidate. And when finally, you are not selected. You probably think maybe 1 other shortlisted candidate got employed but that's not the case. You will see the same advertisement for the same role appeared again. And SME doesnt pay that well too. For someone with an MBA and years of experience at the age of 40s , the salary could be around $3500 .

because human resource is shopping, and like I buy a car, I need to "audition" the car. to the applicant, they are expected to come with sincerity. to the hirers, they are looking at a human, internally thinking "that is a Thing" they say that is the way the "market" slant now. the market never "change" slants in capitalism, and the aura here will always be capitalism until someone speak up and say "excuse me, we are HUMAN too". who will say. even when I did, my words got deleted.

Thanks for sharing your story, James! Retrenchment and unemployment do happen to people, and a lot of times it might not be because of the employee. I agree too that humans have an unlimited capacity to learn new things. That's a positive attitude and shows resilience. Many people can learn from this! Hope you've emerged a much stronger and better person from this experience!

exactly. with more than sufficient savings, no dependents, can stay jobless for years and enjoy things you like! lucky for me I do have a hefty amount of savings from inheritance. so this covid not so bad. dependents really really is a huge expense. not gonna go that route 😆

i was being retrenched once in my thirties and actually it helped me learn more about what i want. i still love my previous job though but i just do not enjoy working with the people around me. still, it was a job i will not take up again... moving on is important

But by getting degrees, it doesn't necessarily improve your chance of getting a job, instead perhaps wasting more money, as it is expensive.

Depends on what you were going back to school for. For some fields, you just can't go in and do it. Some fields require a background like math and science. Depending on what field you had before, you may have long forgotten the basics even in the topics. Reviewing them isn't easy.

It's bad timing ! but avoid blind spot like seeking for same role if opening isn't present. Instead get into any opportunities arises that might be window to new challenges.

I chose not be secularly employed since I was young bcoz I didn't like to mingle with people who played politics in the office. At one time I was working in an audit department I experienced my senior's hostility bcoz I had higher education n she feared I would take over her.She put up a poster with the word'Endurance' making me feel bad as she made others feel that I bullied her instead of the other way round. Before I joined the company I was in business, had made some money n bought two properties. So I didn't bother much about her n left the job to become a lecturer. Today I am pretty comfortable with my economy even I didn't have a secular job throughout my life.I choose to be my own boss by investing in properties n other tangible assets n have my freedom of time.

I m only early 30 and I m afraid I'll be jobless when I'm 40, dunno why but there are many worries pop up in my mind that the employer will hire young/fresh graduate that more cheaper and has up to date skill pack that needed by employers

A gentle reminder to everyone that have ever been retrenched. It is never your fault you got retrenched, and you should never feel shame for being retrenched. Retrenchment is an unfortunate circumstance that you cannot control no matter how you tried to plan your skill portfolio for future changes, or tried to work hard and provide the best possible value to your company. You must never blame yourself. And if it is difficult to internalize what happened, know that the blame always falls squarely on the management of the company who failed you and everyone else. Fear (for your finances and well being) is understandable, let it be the driving force that gets you back on your feet. But shame and self-loathing is a threat that can hold you back from retaking your place in society again.

1:50 You can always go self-employed, or make full use of this time to read yourself some books and upgrades. What's so ashamed? Just cos its societ-stigma? Conforming to their standard and do they actually care about you? 😂 And... 4:47 Learning never stops. There are plenty of those who goes chasing after the wind of fast paced life, never quite got time for self-improvement and where that leaves them? In a state of inadequacy... at old age yess
