It’s humiliating to light because L was basically showing to light that he knows that he is Kira. He is walking right in front of his face and daring him to do something knowing (betting) that he can’t. Light has been putting all this effort into being under the radar and still, with a godly power, L still has enough of a understanding of the whole situation to have, correctly I might add, the gumption to walk up to light and essentially dance right in front of the face of the Apex predator. The predator is tied up and unable to do anything despite having the deepest urges to kill them. For someone who thinks of themselves as a god, as the one with the power over everyone, a power partially provided by his intelligence, it is very humiliating to be simultaneously outsmarted and teased to your face. It’s more humiliating than being taunted in front of the entire Kanto region because light an L are the only two that are smart enough and with enough knowledge to understand the situation. Hard to imagine anything MORE humbling. i imagine the level of fear struck into him, even if light wouldn’t admit to the fear he was feeling, added to the humiliation. It is a deeply personal and intimate exposé. Saying, yeah you think you’re smart and powerful but let me show you how I am smarter and let me render you powerless. You have to remember how egotistical and reactionary and childish light is. He is way more worried about proving things to himself than he is about exterior perceptions. He’s been trying really hard to prove that he is smarter and better than L and that he is to win the game. The labor that he had previously stated to have no mistakes that could lead to him being caught has clearly been shown to be full of ways that could have gotten him caught. It’s a potentially world shattering revelation to light how he truly did not understand the situation that he was in and the man that was pursuing him. He had never been caught out that bad. He thought he was “that guy” but L showed him who that guy really was in that moment. In the original interaction they had over the broadcast you could simply chalk that up to light losing his cool and being reactionary. Light is really good at coping and attempting to rationally (as he would think) in his delusional brain reframe the situation into something that is more comfortable for him to sit with. It’s a lot easier to cope with that loss and say I wasn’t really taking it seriously I wasn’t really trying that hard, he caught me by surprise. But now at this point it has been stated that light and L were now going against each other with full knowledge of the competition and of each other. So for light to have been doing so much to try to be secretive and attempt to have The upper hand it is an absolutely painfully humiliating moment to be shown that you are far more wrong and far more foolish than you thought you were. But being shown the capabilities of L made him step up his game. Eventually.

Beat me to it. L is a cop. He got authority power. If a cop walks up to you and accuses you of a crime without arresting you, he's just admitting he's got no proof. He's still limited by laws. But that's no big deal, it doesn't change the fact that he can just go up to you and accuse you of a crime, and you can't do anything about it. You can deny it, but in this case, L isn't making an accusation, he's just putting Light in a really awkward position bc now he's gotta act like he either doesn't know what he's talking about, or as if he's just smart enough to catch on to whatever L is throwing at em. This is where Light really starts to show us how smart he is. To the point where L's got him involved just bc on the off chance he's wrong, he's got this genius to help him out. But this was also a HUGE risk for L. They've both taken huge risks.

Something underrepresented in discussion around Light is something I think you finally managed to touch on: he comes from a broken ass family that probably contributed to his sociopathic tendencies. His family SEEMS involved and caring on the surface, but time and time again we are shown that he and his accomplishments are little more than a trophy for his family to wave around. Light comes in to try and tell his mom about his day, and she ignores it, "politely" demanding his exam tests. Light feels like the world is rotten, because his home life is rotten. I made a comment just now about this general point. Light still made his choices and quite possibly would have made the same bad choices under an actually healthier environment, but that just means we'd want to give him the same treatment that we'd be giving to the "inferiors", and if it makes him feel like a common criminal, it wouldn't be hard to point out that everybody simply has different strengths and weaknesses, nor would it take long for Light's intelligence to give anybody working with him something to work with for helping him to calm down, Reaper King knows he would need as much.

I have heard online that Japan is not great at helping people who have mental illnesses. Japan is a tradition oriented country that is trying to be future forward, safe, clean, accepting. But unfortunately if u live in Japan long enough u might see that like any country Japan is not the perfect country it wants to be. Light not getting the help he needs for his mental health might be due to Japans possible way of thinking that physical health is prioritized over mental health. That seeking help for mental health might be seen as it’s your problem not our problem. Japan has out of sight of mind thinking. It also has from what I heard a high rate of people offing themselves due the stress of over work, under appreciation, the strive to be perfect, not wanting to bring shame to ones family and job, wanting to be honorable, not wanting to be a failure. I think Light feels all of that but is cracking under the pressure. Kira is Light looking for a way to escape the pressures of his life. Maybe he fell for obvious traps because in some way he wanted to get caught, so he could investigate the Kira case with his father because how else will he be able to spend time with his dad. They say a kid needs their father, but a kid also needs a father that is there mentally and physically. Light like his father is too prideful and stubborn to ask for help because Light does not want to be seen as weak and vulnerable.

Light's parents are just neglectful. It's kind of hinted that they rarely pay attention to him and maybe he became so good at school to get a bit of praise from his mother & father. Also he can literally hide the fact that he's Kira from them. It just shows how little connection he has to his family. Maybe even the whole being "god of the new world" is just Light craving attention from people.

I think because of Light's personality and his grades in school, they don't feel the need to keep constant tabs on him. He is also in his last year of high school when we meet him in the beginning of the series, and it's a cultural difference in the way Japanese people raise their children to have much more independence very early on. Later in the series more attention is given to his relationship with his family and you can see its healthy and they all love and respect each other

They are definitely disconnected. Worried about his grades more than anything else. I think his intelligence is a cause of the disconnect, not a product. @@djsjdh-hoahdi there is absolutely nothing in the series to suggest that Light being Kira is a result of his parenting. Death Note will bring up the past if it is relevant to the current event, and since we see nothing about Light's upbringing, we can safely assume his parents have no part in him becoming a killer. It's simply his own ego and his boredom that drives him. This is why he tries to prevent himself from killing his family. Eventually he stops caring as much, but it's nothing they did. Death note tried to make the protagonist as straight laced as possible to see what absolute power would do to the most ideal person possible. I think that the whole wiretap situation is a good example of how wonky the timeline can be in Death Note. Because when you actually sit down and look at the timeline, this episode actually has a timeskip! But it’s never addressed in the anime so it makes sense why people miss it. Basically, the day that L decides to remove the surveillance from Yagami household it was January 12th, 2004. The entrance exams however, take place on April 5th, 2004. What I’m getting at is that it’s entirely possible that at that point the wiretaps are likely gone by now. It’s also especially true if Light is continuing to not sound suspicious on top of that.

17:00 - Light views his interaction with L here as "humiliating" because in this case her recognizes that he's been intellectually boxed-in and has no immediate answer to the problem, so he mentally chalks the situation up as a "big defeat." That's why his first words are "He got me!" And it is a bad situation, because from this point all the way up into the Yotsuba arc, Light is placed almost entirely on the defensive, as opposed to when he was dealing with the FBI agents, where he was on the offense.

As far as why L had the cameras removed before this interaction, I do sort of agree with you it seemed like a "what's the harm in leaving them there for awhile". But I think what L realized is that Light was not going to make that kind of mistake with cameras and wiretaps around. So if they were there, they would yield nothing and just waste more of their time going over tapes.

In the manga, Light did state that he would have eventually abruptly "found" one of the cameras to get the bugging removed. He actually did that in the live-action version to minimize the damage of Misa coming into the mix as well because of Misa meeting Light being covered there and having Misa being one syllable away from outing both of them before Light did a Shut Up Kiss on her.

Think about it, they're all essentially immortal, not being able to die via the same methods they see humans dying by, as far as they know, the only way they can die is if they don't do their jobs for long enough that their natural lifespan ends. Rem only finds out one method out of pure luck by physically seeing it happen.

So with regard to the wiretaps, I do recall in the manga Light mentioning that he knows how to find bugs/wiretaps, but can't do it without it being a dead giveaway if there are cameras. So the cut to Ryuk talking about not finding them is likely a literary shortcut to note that that search has taken place after Ryuk was able to confirm the removal of the cameras (something he had an investment in doing well due to apples) via what can be summed up as "spoopy ghost powers". I don't recall off the top of my head if that line about knowing about how to find bugs was cut from the anime, but if it was, it explains that little plot hole about them.

Some kids are so smart and bright that parents mistake them for adults and assume they don't need emotional support and actually treat them as wise old philosophers/therapists who they ask for advice. This is hinted when they say the Police and Light's father asked as him as a high school kid for help in solving crime cases and his father's shock at him looking at pr0n. People, whether in positions of authority or not, look up to him and so do his parents, it happens. This explains the roots of his god-complex megalomania which became his downfall in a Greek/ Shakespearean tragic story telling style. That's why they didn't give him the Ai Magase ending, they had to nerf him with impulsiveness stemming from his ego in opposition to his calm, cool, collected and calculated psychopathic and goal oriented demeanor.

I think humiliation is more poignant when you are feeling embarrassed of yourself rather than other people making you feel embarrassed. I say this because I think Light wasn't embarrassed of himself for how he handled their first confrontation and excitement overshadowed any he might have felt. Here, I think he's so pissed off because for once he is frustrated by his own helplessness in the face of L, feeling he should have prepared better or handled it better. He's failed his own expectations of himself and he's embarrassed and humiliated and angry...even though to the outside world, he doesn't have much to be embarrassed about. A-are light's parents... negletful to acknowledge his acomplishments? Like i kbow its not the intent, but the show allowing Light to scream hes kira on his room, not showing any family at the cerimony and then having Light go home by himself on a train accidentally implies he only had Ryuk to congratule his entrance, and that his family probably never noticed his daily shouting about justice one day turned into shouting about criminals dying. So plot twist (joke), if light's mom actually cared about anything but grades he would probably been found out way sonner, or not even have become kira. Only one in the poor kid's family to show any forn of interest into his passion about justice is his dad and hes aways at work.

1:36 ok so two things 1. He needed to kill new criminals being broadcasted to clear his name because Kira has shown L that he can choose the time of death. So if only criminals previously broadcasted keep dying when Light is under surveillance, it immediately casts suspicion on him. And 2. Light also purposely kills minor criminals when he is purposely receiving information about them through the TV. This just says that only minor criminals kept dying regardless of Light receiving information about them or not. So, as Light says later in this episode, the measures he takes towards the surveillance were perfect. Ryuzaki himselfs admits that even if Kira was among those being monitored, he wouldn't give himself away which ultimately lead to Ryuzaki having to reveal his face to Light.

1:44 he had to kill the two criminals right as they were broadcast because L, the madlad he is, would deduce that no criminals introduced to the public during surveillance hours were being killed and he might figure out that Kira was using a time lag

a lot of people will repeat it, there's a lot of cases where deathnote has many implied timeskips, a lot of implied timeskips. plus light is the type of person to make sure a lot of things are looked into so he would check, if he has a feeling someone went in he will have ryuk check around the room to make sure there's no wiretaps so he can actually eat apples indoors.
@KhepriProductions20222 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late, but as for why this one would be more humiliating, I have an idea. As Lind L Tailor, L made a fool of "Kira". At that point, I don't think the name really sunk in for Light since that's just what people decided to call him. Furthermore Light had more wiggle room to escape since even after Kira was exposed for living in Japan that can apply to a lot of people. If Light stopped then, I can't think of how L would be able to find him As Lind L Tailor, L made an attack on Light Yagami. Unlike before, Light can't really distance himself from the shame like he can with Kira since "Light" is how everyone sees him. Personally, I think what pisses him off is that he can't make any bold moves like he usually does since he now has to maintain his innocence and since he has to more or less operate out of fear of being caught, I think that's what he finds humiliating.

To be honest, wire-tapping Light would've done nothing unless L figured out the door trick. If the lead is still broken or the handle all the way up, then Light would instantly be cautious and not freak out like that.

Light's ego got in the way because L managed to pretty much sneak up on him and gain a step forward before Light figured it out. For a narcissist and psychopath (which Light certainly fits the bill), this is a major crack in their mental foundation of control and manipulation of others.

There was no reason to keep the wiretaps and only take away the cameras, the only reason I can think of to do that is to trick him, but thats assuming he knew about the cameras. At this point they didn’t think he knew about the cameras and they instead thought he was using a subtle method of killing, which is why L wonders about his method of killing immediately after, so why go through the effort to just remove one if it makes no difference? Thats probably how they knew after waiting a bit first to be safe.

In my mind Light could tell Ryuk what to look for specifically when they are out killing people. Light was at his special ceremony where he was class representative. I imagine the cameras and bugs are one in the same, perhaps offscreen Ryuk mentioned what the cameras looked like and this allowed Light to deduce the cameras and wiretaps were the same thing. The other theory is that if Ryuk didn't find any wiretaps in Light's room, there simply weren't any placed there and Light was just assuming the worst for his own safety. L mentioned removing the cameras to the Taskforce before coming up with the idea to meet Light in person, so he probably had to go through with it at that point. I would agree that he still should've kept one or two in just in case, but it wouldn't have mattered either way since Light would've still been aware of them. If Light's father placed any wiretaps or cameras in his room while Light was at the entrance ceremony, Light would've noticed his room was entered because of the setup he had on his door mentioned in the previous episode. As well, Light knows his father wouldn't be interested in actually placing wiretaps because of his devotion to the law, something Light counts on more then once throughout the series, which means it's someone associated with L and not the police who set up the cameras in which case Light would count on them falling for the door trick again.

1:30 The point of killing those criminals was to show that Kira killed criminal's whose name's were broadcast while Light had no access to that information. L already knows at that point that Kira can control the time of death so criminals dying wouldn't clear light of innocence but killing criminals who ere freshly broadcast would theortically throw L off Light's trail. Yeah it still unlitmately leads to more suspscion from L but he achieve the goal regardless. This seems to be a common cirtism of light's plan that they're 'dumb' like with the whole foreitting ownership of the death note thing. The plan was for L to find the death note and see the 13 day rule and therefore 'prove' and Light and Misa are 'innocent' Light didn't really care about what his non-Kira self would do as long as he got to touch and claim ownership of the death note again.

Lights whole thing is pride, its not about the facts for him, its about how everyone else sees it, especially HIM and L, if Light feels like he lost even if he actually didn't hes gonna drive himself crazy. Hes an overobsessive genius who is extremely fragile when it comes to ego. He needs to prove to himself that he is the best and anything that geniuinely catches him off guard without the oppurtunity to clap back and destroy his opponent is gonna make him blow. When L annouced himself he basically checkmated Light, since Light didn't see it coming he feels like he lost and knows that

Remember they don’t know how Kira kills- as far as they know it’s literally just as simple as he wishes death upon people, so the fact that criminals who’s identities are already available dying won’t really prove anything. There's something in this show that I don't feel is talked about enough and that's showcased especially well in this episode, that being the soundtrack. The piano represents Light and the Guitar represents L, these both have meaning in themselves, but the soundtrack takes it to another level with the character with the upper hand always having the dominant instrument, you can especially see this in Light's rant upstairs, where despite Light being on screen the only instrument is this blaring guitar, showing in such a brilliant way that Light has been outplayed and styled on to the highest degree.

15:12 This brings up something where I would like to state 2 words to exemplify that your point is correct: Samurai Jack. Samurai Jack is listed under Tyke Bomb as a non-evil example raised to be a One Man Army so that he can stop the mad designs of the nigh-invulnerable evil being that plagues the world and had already taken his childhoold. But where Jack and his mentors succeed where Light and his family fails, is active involvement of a connection to the world. Jack is shown the beauty of the world that he is destined to protect, which has him understand better why he should protect it and why he should take note of how he does it, leading to his general compassion and respect for nature, at which point we are not needing an external factor like his being up against a threat that only he can defeat to understand why he is the good guy. Light Yagami, by contrast, is surrounded by superficiality. Between a probably overly busy dad (and this particularly gets brought up in the live action drama version for Light's backstory there), a mom who puts too much emphasis on his grades, a younger sister who is a blatant fangirl who we even see Light calling bull on her remarking about her finishing her math homework, a society intent on being Internet Jerks, and fangirls who only show any real interest in Light's power or image in one form or another, I'd be worried if nothing would have happened to Light's psyche from realizing, ironically, how fake people can be. Misa's loyalty to Light has the problem of being built on Light being attractive and athletic, and has the added problem of caring a lot more about product placement than about something genuine like clear affinity with nature. Light also lived likely without being taught better about the wonders of life, when the involvement of police work that Light was already interested in is already a profession that earns its stereotyping with police officers just being cold about subjecting people to the law without asking WHY the law is designed as it is or especially WHY the "common criminal" is doing what they are, because if you're lucky, they'll shoot first and ask questions later. We can contrast this from L, who understands that people inevitably have different strengths and weaknesses, because he was brought up to be good at working with that, rather than any need for perfection. I will still agree that Light made his own choices to be sociopathic. He did think to ask SOME important questions, but thought that testing the Death Note, without even working second opinion involvement, was a good idea anyway. Some of his efforts to evade arrest also shows disconnect, between the fire trap's premise being alleged desperation with journal protection over regard to the safety of his family that is still loving even if they are needlessly shallow (also worth mention, if never brought up, is the lack of a token effort to have a delayed safeguard such as a fire extinguisher at a suitably precise distance from his bedroom), or how the decoy message to L could have been built to be a simple dining message about "dad" rather than reapers loving apples. Those are the actions of a Knight Templar robot, and in that regard I can contrast Light in that regard from Johnny Fives in the film Short Circuit, and by the way, I had to look it up without knowing the movie's name, only remembering it being on the HUB Network/Discovery Family at one point and also about Johnny teaching himself to not kill people. Light Yagami is a human choosing to be a robot because it's easy. Johnny Fives is a robot choosing to be humane because it's right. The whole point of calling out the conduct of people surrounding Light still works. Although I will concede that the possibility of Light still making the same bad choices under a less perfectionist environment is still very real, we are seeing signs of how the people in his life, in their inconsistency and their own attempts to involve flash without substance, did not help matters whatsoever. When all is said and done, Light does have valid points such as how we have some ugly reliance on political correction for morality, regardless of his hypocrisies. This won't be the last time in chronological media where a Lucifer analogue will have good points about our suckiness either, but thankfully, works can always follow up on Death Note with actual involvement of reconstruction to counteract the deconstruction, to show that there are people out there who are both intelligent AND virtuous, not the reveling mediocrities that feed the Lucifer analogues' wrath motivation. There's a reason why Android 17 in Dragon Ball Super earns my respect when he shows how he's even basically cut from the same cloth as the Link in Zelda: A Link to the Past, an equally crafty hero. We should be having the "inferiors" encouraged to improve via healthier incentive, not kill them. At the very least, it's interesting to determine how much of Light living a hollow life was by his own delusion-driven choices, and how much was by the design of a society that was having its own case of seeking perfectionism without better purpose.

A lot of little details and explanations got dropped from the anime adaptation that actually answer questions you've brought up (such as "what did Light write in the Death Note for Raye Penber?") and a lot of story is missing from the Near/Mello half of the anime.

I watched the portion covering the BB Murder Case, but I'm holding off on watching the rest until I'm done with my series because I don't wanna be influenced too much by it and inadvertently take some of that YT's ideas. I know that a lot of things get answered in the manga; hell, stuff I didn't even bring up like how he deals with the cameras that are inside of the Police Station. But, this is just meant to be solely from the perspective of the Anime.

17:00 i just realized something , recall at this point in time Ryuk did mention that he was not an ally or enemy of Light and would not offer him any assistance. however, he is bored and to him, Light is the perfect outlet- the entertainment he so desperately craved + apples. so, hear me out, what if in offering Light the shinigami eyes , he could figure that Light still had decades of life left and could potentially consider L as being worth half of those remaining years hence why he offered Light that deal again, the deal which, I quote says "ill say this Once More- give me half your remaining lifespan and ill give you the shinigami eyes." implying he won't ask again. this is speculation here but what if the "lifespan" a shinigami sees is not exactly a death date ? but rather , the maximum that person would live. after all, you could have 50 years left but if another DN user wrote your name then those 50 years would amount to nothing. so potentially Light would only live to a middle aged man BUT w the eyes , ensure he would not be arrested or convicted of his murders. however, it could also just be that Ryuk saw Light's death date in only a matter of years and thought to himself 'screw it, i may as well make the game more interesting in what little time i have available. make it a cod match instead of chess' I could be wrong about the lifespan not equating to death date so maybe Ryuk really wanted to get a few years on his roster but that would seem counterproductive to kill his source of entertainment far earlier than if he lived another couple decades where Ryuk might find Light starting a family and maybe even homegrowing his very own Kira Jr.

Another point to mention is that L humiliated Light by matching his intellect, both getting perfect scores, and also dressing so casually and revealing who he was at his commencement speech.
