I at one time had a blaster with a .60 overbore and alot of other aftermarket parts on it and I loved that quad so much .. traded it off for a 270cc micro sprint car and regret it to this day 10 years later .. after watching you redo the one blaster I am now determined to find an old dead blaster and bring it back to life in honor of my oldest two daughters mom who died unexpectedly late last year. . She had a white and blue blaster with a .40 over bore and other add ons and we rode them for hours and made many good memories... hope I luck into one someday at a price I can afford.. from my heart in pa to you thanks for the inspiration!!!

For my experience the niche stuff is fine for a stock replacement. Cast and such that I got in the top end kit was pretty rough around the edges and needed some attention from the grinder but it has held up solid to a winter and spring of thrashing. I wouldn't assume it would hold up to more power and extreme track abuse but for the average joe stock power rider it's that nice cheap that'll-do kit and not much more. I'm tracking it this weekend so we'll see how it holds up, it may surprise me.

love the level of your builds. I am currently working on a Suzuki GSXR 750 that i bought wrecked. I've torn it down to frame and motor and got everything new. New plastics, subframe, swing arm, and wire harnesses front and back. I ran into a issue with the headlights not powering on but the bike is running and sounds super healthy. The title is clean which is one of the main factors why i bought it. I never built a bike before but I've always been mechanically inclined. Its videos like yours that got me started. Stuff like this is super fun to me. I love wrenching on shit and making things look really good when they looked really bad. The point of my ramble is that these videos get people going...

Like the sonic cleaner you use. I used to repair sonic cleaners from a little bigger than yours all the way up to dual units 2 ft x 4 ft for hospital use. Mainly used on instruments that were pre-washed, and looked clean. The Sonics did a great job of removing bits of tissue & flesh in and around screws and all those invisible places that held microscopic bacteria and spores !!! Good idea to use a fine meshed stainless basket for the tiny stuff if you have a drain, or before dumping the dirty stuff. Best thing you could use for carbs and such ! Basically, the bottoms of the cleaner tubs have transducers attached that vibrate up & down 50 to 100 x per second, or more depending on what you have, higher end stuff is adjustable, why you can see the tiny ripples on the surface and feel the hum ! I used to get service calls for gemstones removed from nurses jewelry and eyeglass screws that vibrated loose and went down the drains but got caught in the traps, fortunately for them. Amazing what this equipment will break loose !!! Keep it up !!! Your doing great !!! Do it while your young !!! Knowledge is power, respect, and ka-ching !!! Your building wisdom as you go. Its all upside with your positive attitude man, RESPECT 👍

Hey Mike been watching your videos forever now and have been doing work on quads going on 5 years now but the niche top ends are really good for the price long term they hold up surprisingly well I personally have 2 warrior 350's with niche top ends and my cousin has a 300ex with one and we've went 4 years on them with no issues. I would recommend that you use that wiseco piston though because we all know that wiseco is a brand you rely on. I am currently building a raptor 660 actually aswell right now, I am going all out but niche has definitely been in the conversation for a rebuild. I can't personally vouch for the raptor kits but the warrior ones are surprisingly good.

I actually have a niche top end kit on my Warrior, ran the kit just like it came. The bike is great, I haven’t had any problems with it. Honestly with 4 stroke quads I wouldn’t be worried about running it, with a banshee or two stroke MAYBE the cylinder(s) but definitely not the piston(s).
@MichaelSabo2 жыл бұрын
Reading through the comments and from personal experience, I think your pretty spot on; 2 stroke is really dicey especially because they need to do the ports and everything and usually the wrist pin bearings are junky.

The good thing about that cam tensioner “mod” with the bolt welded is it means that they likely never split those cases. Weather due to lack of money, experience, or both they do that mod because it buys a little time before replacing the cam chain. It’s actually a common mod on older machines. I’ve done it a few times on bikes I was selling before I learned it’s not good practice to screw the next guy…. So you’ll have to replace the cam chain for sure but those gears missing are likely not for that machine

As far as the niche top end goes, i have a niche 440 kit on my LTZ and to say I gave it hell is an understatement. I put that thing on 4 years ago and it just started smoking. No loss of compression, no piston slap. I am not nice to my bikes. They get the full force of my thumb with no mercy. I'm currently building a motor for the LTZ and while its not getting a full niche kit, it will definitely get a niche cylinder with a wiseco piston.

I don't know how much it would cost to ship it to you from AL. But honestly, it's in good shape. Let me know, and we'll figure some way to get it to you... And, once you get that thing built, good luck on the carb jetting! It is a PITA!!!! really! The float levels have to stay the same in both carbs, or it dies. I ended up letting someone else jet it, I got so frustrated with it! But you can wheelie it easier than a 400ex! And you can't say that about many quads!! LOL!!!

This brings back memories. I used to be into Suzuki ATVs and Quads. I got so many clapped out units thinking I got this great deal. Always ended up doing a full tear down and spending way more on parts then the unit would ever be worth. Eventually I bought a brand new ltz400 and rode it hard for a decade. Whenever I broke something and had to open it up I upgraded everything that made sense for a nice trail ride and sometime track. Many times I considered selling it but I did all the work and its been well maintained and figured I would sell a gem for less that what its worth and one day I would want to get back into it and then get someones clapped out pos for too much. I just been mostly mothballing it, hopefully I can hit the trail this summer. But yeah, seems like quads attract inexperienced knuckleheads that are broke and ruin a perfectly good quad with their interpretation of an "mod"

I thought it was a Z400 for a second. But, with the blue frame, white plastics, and silver engine, it also kinda looks like an 87-90 LT230/250S too. Champion plugs go in 2 things. Lawn mowers and garbage cans. Those fuel adjust screws are probably for a KEIHIN FCR carb. Those are MIKUNI carbs. NICE. Nothing says HACK like painting an engine AFTER assembly. I DON'T CARE if that's how cars did it in the 60s. Or PWC. Your maraca muffler reminds me of a PowerBomb header I took off a blown up YZ250F. There was a PIECE OF EXHAUST VALVE rattling around in there! Nice hardware store upper engine mount bolt. I'll bet that the cam chain is smoked, and wouldn't tighten, so ACE welded that nut on the tensioner. 3YF is a Yamaha code. Japanese piston. Stock compression ratio, stock bore. Chinese cylinder. Oh wow, it WAS chinese. Makes sense. Came as a cheap kit. Why would they put the Yamaha code on the dome? Goofy bastards. I agree about the intake valves being smoked. Usually it's just the valves and the seats are OK with a cut. Hope for the best. Go in that bottom end. If that top end is any indication of the "work" done to it, there's GONNA be something screwed in the bottom. I contacted DRW about making a Zilla case saver. Let's see what they say! I don't like shock covers either. Those shocks don't need them, the shafts are covered with the plastic sleeves. I like that wig. You definitely got your work cut out for you with that turkey Mike. A fitting opening video for Basket Case Garage!

We used that brand cylinder on my buddies raptor and used a wiesco piston and rings and so far 3 years of abuse and runs great , now we did take it a machine shop and had it honed but not bad .

Its cool you're doing a 660, I had mine put back in order a year or so ago then the front sprocket came off and since then I was thinking to put it all apart and rebuild it like I did my banshee, more of a restoration / restomod

Awesome man, good luck with your restoration too!

Mike, my guy!! you have officially gone off the deep end! That thing looks like 10 lbs of JB weld and four rattle cans of tortured Yamaha🤣, but I have faith in you, I already know you’ll put your touch on this basket case and have it back to beyond amazing! Kelp em coming my man!

My first sport quad was a 04 660 SE. Fun quad, wish I knew what was all done to it when I bought it.

Great machine man; I am not sure if this was an SE; the frame was originally red; so I was one of the red/white ones; can't remember if that was SE or not.

Since I don’t know quads well at all, I really couldn’t tell when he was being genuine or sarcastic when he went through the whole thing lol

Dear lord. The amount of work that bike needs is crazy. Just the sandblasting and pitted/painted aluminum alone

I picked up a set of Niche cylinders for my Banshee during lockdown when I couldn't get my stock cylinders machined. They're still on it now and I have no complaints for the price. Note I am not using the pistons that came with, felt very cheap.
