Painting Over Metallics: Contrast Paint Vs Speedpaints

In todays video I'll be trying out a range of colours from Citadel Contrast Paints and Army Painter Speedpaints over metallics to see which ones turn out best.

It’s all about finding the finish you like the most by mixing and matching. Honestly I apply a lot of my contrast paints out of the airbrush over a zenithal of white ink and it works a treat 😊

I’ve done the same a few times. The white ink really helps those highlights to pop.

Probably my favorite use of contrast paints or speed paints has been using Aggros Dunes over Runelord Brass spray. It makes a very rich dark gold color that I’ve used for my Custodes.

Contrast paints in an Airbrush are amazing! Plus i've found if applying Contrast using a brush, you have to make sure to start from one end and work to the next, making sure to not go over the same part twice until its completely dry, else you get patchy areas and tears in the layer of paint.

I’ve used it a couple of times in an airbrush for some larger units and I’ve always been really impressed with the results.

i use contrast or army painter paints or i use a mix off vallejo painta to get what am looking for this also depends on what am painting but good use of the contrast and army painter good vid

I also had a speedpaint explosion, Runic Gray. I was just going to drop out a tiny little dab of it to cover a minis gauntlet before bed, then the bottle exploded into my palette and in an effort to waste as little as possible, ended up batch painting until 2 am. Happy to report the dwarves look awesome though. I would be really interested in seeing how they turn out over gold paint -- I have a random bottle of gold spray paint I used for a single project once. Would love to see if it would be usable as a base for speed paints.

The reds, oranges, greens, and browns all work really well with gold. Another great look is transparent black over gold. however as you need really thin layers to get just the right amount, it's a better done with airbrush kinda deal.

happened to me with a vallejo dropper bottle and yes its pretty explosive. if the paint is coming through stop and put a pin in or remove the nib. your match for for warp lightning is actually AP ork flesh/skin.

Yeah there's some fun combinations that could definitely create some great effects.

Try some of the blue and green Contrast and Speedpaint paints over a gold or copper metallic. The results are beautiful for both, especially if you are going for a steampunk look.

I guess it depends but if you are looking for a filter over metallic I'd have thinned the contrast paints down - as you would for say airbrush use. The other things is the army painter speedpaints are more satin than the matt looking contrast paints so look a little more shiney - which again makes that metallic look work better. I'm not much for the technique though - if I wanted this I'd just hit my metallics with an ink wash or something like nuln oil. Thanks for sharing though.

Which Vallejo silver did you use? Game Color? Model Color? I picked up a bottle of Vallejo Metal Color Aluminum for this sort of experiment. Still a good video.

Would this work with a black topcoat? I know for speedpaint the black is more opaque than other colours, but I'm looking to paint some black armour and i think a metallic sheen to it would look good

Yeah absolutely. You could thin the black down as well to get a bit more of the metallic coming through.

so what i'm getting out of this is that contrasts work like shit over metallics so yiu might as well just base them in any matte color? I thought contrast was more similar to na ink but these colors are opaque af
