The drummer and the guitarist were brothers, Vinnie Paul (Drums) passed away a few years ago from heart failure. Dimebag (Guitar) was murdered while performing on stage back in 2003. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott murdered on stage in 2004, his brother Vinnie Paul the drummer passed away a few years ago. However the reason that Metallica is more well known, largely is because they transitioned in the early '90s to be a lot more commercially playable and got a lot of radio air time. Pantera chose to go against the grain of this and grunge which was becoming more popular at the time (and later Nu-Metal) to keep focus on hard hitting metal albums ... this is clear in the evolution of their sound across their albums. Though their lack of commercial play doesnt mean they weren't widely popular in the '90s as proven by their Far Beyond Driven album going to #1 in the charts in Australia and the US. I do, and always will, prefer Pantera over Metallica - the musicianship between the two bands doesn't even compare.

They never labeled themselves like that, I was into Pantera back then, it was always just heavy/thrash metal, and that's what it is, the term 'groove metal' doesn't existed in those years.

Pantera was my very 1st concert. It was sold out and we were out back of the venue and the band invited us onto the tour bus. So we got to go in with them because we couldn't get any tickets. What's in that video is how all of their concerts are. Bad ass

Most people struggle appreciating metal because of vocals, but try to imagine them as a texture to suit the music, traditional vocals just wouldn't fit. If you tone out the vocals first, appreciate the music then the appreciation for the vocals often swiftly follows.
