Hi Pan. The best glass coating I’ve used is Vision Protect by Nanovations USA. Easy to apply, 20 minute drive away time and the best longevity in all the glass coatings I’ve tested in my glass shop that I own here in Western Canada. No matter what glass coating you use it is absolutely imperative to properly polish and clean the glass. Glass is more porous than you think so cleaning and polishing is important. Best polish I tried is Ceriglass. For me, the 3” polish pad on a short throw da is easier to use. Just my 2 bits from experience in doing auto glass since 1988 and coating glass for 7 years.

Hi Pam: very well informed video about the different glass repellent options. Thanks for sharing this to help understand how these types of glass repellency works. I’ve been using the original Rain-X windshield repellent since it was introduced back in the 80’s. I know technology has come a long way and longer lasting repellent. Rain-X usually lasts about 2-3 weeks . What I do to keep it maintained is to clean my windshield and apply only one coating of Rain-X every 2 to 3 weeks. This is very cost effective for me. In all do respect, the other types of windshield repellents are great options, but I prefer doing it economically. I have no problems doing this every couple of weeks. Been doing this since the 80’s
@freddoflintstono9321 Жыл бұрын
I started with Rain-X when it was introduced in Europe, but at some point renewing it ever few weeks gets tedious. I then came across Nigrin who offered long term variants, and eventually I stumbled across Soft99 who formulated this on request for the Japanese airline industry, and I've been using that ever since. I re-apply the coat every 9 month or so, and it has zero problems with jet cleaning and automated car washes. Wonderful stuff.

Had mine done with Gtechniq G1 nearly 3 years ago now, it is still repelling quite well, but since changing blades they seem to judder a little sometimes, I think the old blades were coated with the product too. What I do to maintain is clean well with glass cleaner and top up using an SI spray such as Gyeon wetcoat or carpro Hydo2lite.
@robster77876 ай бұрын
What’s interesting is that you mentioned how RainX will only last you a few weeks, but in my active experience, the RainX degrades overtime, but will repel effectively fairly well into the 3-5 month period. Southern US had recently experienced heavy rain produced from hurricane Beryl recently, and the rain was so heavy that pretty much every car on the road dropped their speed from 65mph down to 45 and windshield wipers were on max. I still had RainX still on my car and haven’t applied a fresh coat in 6 months. Even with the downpour, not once did I use my windshield wipers going 55 mph. My wipers were turned off the whole time. So even if you can’t afford the expensive repellent, literally any repellent will work wonders.

@PanTheOrganizer my favorite is PIAA Super Silicone wiper blades. No need to apply any additional products to the windshield, just install the wiper blades when your old ones need replacement (or earlier). During their normal use, they leave a layer of silicone behind on the windshield which provides all the water repellency of the products in your video; and it essentially reapplies the coating every times you use them. They also out perform other wiper blades; the 100% silicone composition gives them a longer useful life than other wiper blades.
@PanTheOrganizer2 жыл бұрын
I would have to try those one day. So PIAA is the brand? Is there a specific model for the silicone wiper blades? Some product codes can be tricky sometimes.

I have had great success with Pinnacle GlassCoat Window Sealant. I have been using the same 16oz bottle for 8 years now and I still have 20 to 30% remaining in the bottle. I only use two to three drops per left/right side and I will get 2 to 3 months of rain repellant on a daily driver. But yes, prepping the windshield is everything with the Pinnacle GlassWork Water Spot Remover. Both are very easy to use and I will have a difficult time switching to another product when these bottles are finished. The age of the product has not seemed to decrease its rain repellant abilities.

I bought a new Ford F-150 that came with a dealer installed ceramic sealant on the windshield. It was horrible - at least here in sunny Florida. It made looking through the brand new windshield look like it was sandblasted, with a sort of prismatic effect in direct sunlight. I struggled to completely remove it, and am now using plain old Rain-X. Yes, it requires frequent reapplication, but no more annoying prismatic effect in direct sunlight, and excellent performance in torrential tropical rain.

Excellent review of the process and products. My suggestion to friends is Griot's Garage Glass Sealant based upon the $10 for 8-oz that works longer than Rain-X and easy to use. That one bottle will last many vehicles (for exterior glass only). Aquapel is good but for one vehicle. I am running the top coatings and they are pricey but do last longer 12+ months. Key to any product's performance is keeping the glass clean, especially after running along our highways and streets. If you see grime where the wipers did not clean, then that hidden traffic film will block the coatings! If it stops working just clean the glass again with your favorite cleaner. For coated glass CarPro Clarify takes top honors for keeping them lasting their best.

That was a great tutorial Pan, really appreciated that, I first started using rain X (beleive it or not) in about 1991! Trouble is, as you say that these are largely inefective below about 30mph and the trouble with Rain X, good as it is was back at that time, is that using the wipers for safety at low speed quite quickly simply "wiped" the rain X off along with the rain. Good to hear there are much more robust products now, have bought on your advice the Gtechniq G1 to try, well after all I am in the UK so that should make sense!

I just got the rain-x PRO cerami-x glass cleaner + water repellent from walmart for like $10. It says it lasts up to 6 weeks. Going to test it out this summer and see how it does. Something cheap and easy. Definitely going to step it up next time i buy some. Probably the nova series for sure and get that 16-24month durability!

I use fusso ultra glaco. Living in the UK so it's always raining as well, Easily last 12 months and it cost just as much or less than Rain X in some stores. For people in UK just buy it from Eurocarparts. £11.99 usually :)

I use Gtechniq G1 and have for a number of years. Lasts at least a year for me, and is hydrophobic to some degree for at least two years. I've started refreshing it approximately annually because I like it best when it's extremely hydrophobic. Compared to some products it can be a PITA to install and get all of the streaks out, but using alcohol on the glass after application seems to get rid of the streaks quickly, followed by water and a microfiber towel.
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
The next one you should try for sure, which is soooo much easier to apply, is Soft99 Ultra Glaco. I tested that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6THfmCKp7lqnMk

I've used ProtectAll for glass and all the trim and paint on my vehicles and they all held up very well. Now I'll be trying out the Turtlewax Graphene Flex to do the same thing. I almost tried Griots 3-in-1 wax but you can't use that on glass. I prefer to use one product for all instead of specific products because I don't want to worry about getting the protectant on the wrong surface.
@PanTheOrganizer5 ай бұрын
You shouldn't worry about using surface specific products, as they tend to work better on their given surface, compared to a one-use type product. If there's a bit of overspray, you just wipe with a microfiber towel. Really not the end of the world. Or spray on the towel, and then wipe the surface. That way you get zero overspray on other surfaces. Where there's a will, there's a way.

On a highline car I might consider one of the mid or upper level sealants, but after using TW Graphine Flex Wax on the paint and the glass at the same, it's more convenient than doing a separate application just for the glass, and it still lasts months.

I have tried pretty much all of the products that you are going over and they ALL work well. The primary difference is how long it last. Until you get to the professional grade, the others just do not last very long, so it becomes how often you want to apply it. Great video as always.

When I ceramic coated my SUV a year and a half ago I applied the CARPRO Fly-by Forte. Don't know which version it was, I just purchased it on eBay and didn't really care about that, but I do know that it is an awesome product. At about 30-35 mph the water just flies off the windshield and was not necessary to use the wipers.

I've been using Rain x for a long long time on the car. On the motorcycle I was using the same ice seal and shine as the rest of the bike, but believe it or not, it works too well. The water beads up, runs up the windshield and right into my face LOL. So i think next application will be careful to leave an inch wide strip of untreated windshield at the very top to encourage the rain to go off the sides rather than over the top lip. Great video, hadn't thought of polishing the car windshield.

hi pan love the vid as always, I'm a Rain X man, as you say prep is the key, I use the rain X rain repellent from the pour bottle this is applied to the glass and left for approx 15-20 minutes then leveled using a damp micro fibre (distilled water) , wiper blades cleaned and coated the same, washer bottle drained and filled with rainX washer additive, the spray bottle as stated on bottle is as a two in one glass cleaner and repellent, so this is used to glean glass and as a topper to the coating already applied. and just to let you know if you didn't they now have their own ceramic glass coating, all the very best to you 👍

I put Gtechniq on my daily driver, first time ever using a glass coating. Now when I test drive a customers car in the rain I’m amazed that people don’t immediately or constantly crash whenever it rains because the difference in visibility between a coated and uncoated windshield is astonishing. When spring rolls around, I’m going to put in on all my cars, because in my brain, having a coated windshield is a now a safety issue.

A few months ago I did my windshield with the Glassparency coating (followed the link from your video). It’s usually garaged, but I parked in the driveway last night and it rained. Having just put Gyeon Wet Coat on our already ceramic coated cars (Using two UK Carbon Collective (CC) ceramic products on the paint-2 coats each) I am interested to explore the intermediate Gyeon windshield product. Like many, have used RainX for decades. But during winter driving, this product durability lacks. I have used CC ceramic for windshields, but it does not appear to be very hydrophobic. I think the $40 Gyron w 3-4 month durability is the next step up from RainX.

Pan , thanks for the update on the subject of glass coatings. I used glassparency on my truck when you had the give away and it performed well. I tried the new version on Fly by Forte a couple months ago on my girls friends car. So far very pleased with it.

Good to know! How long did the GlassParency last for you in your conditions? And did you do the maintenance every 3 months?
@darylh1002 жыл бұрын
I did the maintenance at 6 months because i could only get 1 kit. It is still hanging in but starting to fade. Great product but since it requires a dealer to apply i will probably go with one of the pro grade products you mentioned in this video. The new version of fly by forte is really performing well. The car sits outside most of time. Nothing seems to stick to the windshield after 2 months. I think they claim 2 years durability so we will see.

@@PanTheOrganizer I am torn right now, but since I own three vehicles I am thinking I will get a few different products. I want to try Quick View on my wife's car. Simply because it stays in the garage and doesn't get driven much so I think it would be fine. I am leaning towards Car Pro Fly by for my car as we use that as our daily driver. So I used to use Rain X, but years ago I switched to Meguiars Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Wax. I used that for years until I switched to Hybrid Solutions Ceramic spray (made by Turtle Wax). But after a couple years, I've switched back to Meguiars Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Wax. While the ceramic spray did repel better initially, it didn't last even half as long as the carnauba wax. I have several vehicles, my daily gets washed probably 2-3 times a week thru a touch automatic car wash. I have monthly carwash memberships on all my vehicles so they get washed pretty often. I almost never use my wipers, but the glass does see a bit of "touch" from the car wash bristles. So for now, I'm just sticking with the carnauba wax for the longevity. I was hoping that this video would have a product that would cause me to switch.
