We used to only use store-bought Sloppy Joe starter (sauce) in a can. But this year, with some help from you guys, we discovered pioneer woman's recipe - and started making it ourselves. And we love it! So we're going to can some of that up in todays video, using some of ketchup I have canned up from earlier this season down in the basement pantry. This recipe is a blend of the following:

I wonder, to be extra safe, and add to the flavor, if you thought about adding apple cider vinegar to your sloppy joe sauce? I watch a vlogger, who is studying the old ways of preservation, and she has been talking with an Amish friend, who told her they have always water bathed everything! They add a little vinegar to a lot of their foods, but it doesn't give the food they canned, a vinegar taste. For example, they cut up thin skin potatoes, put them in the jar, fill with water, and for quarts, they add a T of vinegar to each jar, less to pints. They bring the water bath to a rolling boil, and keep it that way for 3 hrs, for quart jars.

Hi, Rachel and Todd! I love all your posts, from canning to solar home off grid systems. You're always my first port of call. Can you tell me, as a Brit, what is sloppy Joe sauce used for? I know it looks delicious enough to eat from the jar with a spoon. (Also as a Brit may I help with your struggle with "Worcestershire" without being impertinent? It goes to a count of three, said quickly - Wu - Sta - Sha Worce-ster-shire Yes, nothing like the spelling, with many silent r's!! All "shires" place names are shortened to a "-sha" or "shuh" or maybe a "shur" depending on regional accent. Although our working Shire horses are said as it is spelled. Just to be awkward, lol.)
