I still remember how, playing this game as a kid on the PS2, I was convinced graphical fidelity literally could not get better than this. It was as close to photorealism as I could recognise. Now, of course, I see the flat textures and the patchy grass... but this game still has a magic to it, and I'm happy to get the chance to revisit.

to be honest, the game also looked closer to reality back then because both the game and Television were at like 360p, which made real life look worse and hid the flaws of the game. Now that everything is HD or in 4k (including the footage from this video since this is emu), it is harder to be photo-realistic
@johnnybravo9096 Жыл бұрын
It was photo realistic for the time. What I mean by that, is that most photos you would see the public use aand tv stations were not HD or where taken on throwaway cameras etc so at the time it actualy was photorealitc. Not even your memories are in hd. If you want to see how weird it is, there's a video on here from 1994 new york in full HD, just search for that It's a little strange because of the aforementioned lack of most memories in hd.

You would be WAY faster without ASM. ASM tanks your pace like crazy. Turning off ASM would not affect points. I've beat the game (with the exception of the GT World Cup and supercar festival) with just kei cars, and the amount of grip you get from insane slip angles carried that run. El Capitan 200 was definitely the hardest, as I had to defend against the zonda for 71 laps with a Suzuki Cappuccino. Edit: I believe I used the ginetta G4 for the classic stuff, as it meets modern kei car specs, it's definitely a cop out.

There are a very few cars outside Subaru and Ruf that also uses a Boxer engine (think its mainly the Sports 800 and even a just-as-slow VW), just need to keep restarting till you only get Subarus as opponents and even then you gotta get good with NoS usage and driving skill. Hey Pap, of all the GT4 challenge videos that became popular on KZbin (and inspired me to get back into GT4), your 200 point challenge is my favorite by a wide margin, and I really hope you make more GT4 content. I wanted to do my own challenge (which I posted on Reddit and TheGamingDefinition's Discord) where I finished each event with the cheapest car possible (buy price+upgrades, no prize cars-which makes this a de-facto no upgrade challenge for the easier events). To cap it off, I wanted to do the GTWC with a standard production car, without leaning on easy competition like the Gillet, CLK GTR, etc.. but it wasn't viable, so I used the Motul Pitworks Z with a stage 4 turbo, which worked perfectly and was an excellent alternative (and not that difficult to get) beating a moderate lobby with none of the easy opponents. Honestly stunning how good it was with 940 hp, didn't even adjust the suspension settings. Also tried to use the Zonda LM in a similar event in the extreme hall, but it had horrible tire wear and I got cocky trying to beat an R92 and R89. Questions about your run- is the BMW 120D just that good? For FR I used the stock Skyline GTS-T and the competition was pretty stiff. Is the Callaway rated very poorly for points, because I never got a sub-100 point race trying out the 96 Corvette, Camaros, etc.. for Supercar- ended up using the Mustang SVT Cobra, which was excellent. The Compact cup seems very difficult with the 50 hp Nissan, I failed with the Honda City Turbo but crushed them with the 1990 SiR.
@Papamanual6 ай бұрын
Thanks man, I'm glad I was your inspiration to get back into GT4. I dont have any particular GT4 content in mind, so i probably wont make anything anytime soon. Nothing has really piqued my interest to play the game again. I didnt do all that much research into what cars were "best" for 200 points early in the run. I thought this run would force me to use cars that I never would have as a kid (and it did) - my races were like 1-10 points back then lol. So I cant really answer your questions about whether the BMW 120d or the Callaway C12 or any of the other cars were the best choices for this particular challenge - more that it gave me an opportunity to make the game more difficult for myself. From memory, I think the Legacy B4 Blitzen, the elise 111R and the car I used for the world classic car (I think it was the Honda s800 or s600) came from suggestions in an old GT4 forum. Aside from that, I usually picked cars just that I felt like could take on the challenge, using WildCobraZ28's guide a little to make sure I wouldnt buy a car that was too good and waste money.

@@Papamanual Hello again, I'm planning on streaming my own 200 point challenge run when I get OBS figured out. I already have configs for pretty much every event in the Beginner+professional halls, that I haven't seen done before and aren't cheating with the Dodge Ram. Also learned that suspension upgrades don't affect points, so racing or semi-racing is a no brainer. Granted, one car I'm using cannot be obtained without a sub-200 point race (Lotus Elan) I've learned a special trick that makes finding a viable lobby in GTWC much easier- lowering the downforce in the 787B (or the Toyota GT-one, which I actually prefer) to less than the 63F/88R default, something like 50/60 which is still far more than the LM race cars (38/53) and makes finding a 200 point lobby far easier. This also explains why the Chapparal 2J is rated poorly for points as it has 0/0 downforce, even with an oil change and medium tires getting a 200 point race is easy, although I have trouble not spinning out.

This might be the best Gran Turismo challenge run that I've seen! The challenge can be applied to 100% of the game, allows every mechanic and characteristic of it, and has its difficulty intrinsic in it since this was never one intended way to complete the game nor is an objective at any point to complete a race with max points due to its difficulty, yet existing the point system as an instrument that can be used to challenge yourself other than indicating the difficulty of a race. All of this while ensuring fun because doesn't deviate much from the intended way to play encouraging you to keep high-level performance and find some loops around complications but not relying too much on those, nor having that many fun/difficulty breaking ones, and it's a natural (semi-intended) way to increase the difficulty. For the execution, different approaches are shown, banning those considered overpowered, in-depth exploration of mechanics, usage of a huge variety of features, playing the pre-run part instead of loading a savefile (licenses and missions), etc... One thing I miss is focus on two things, the Cr. management and the unlockables bits. Money might've not been a problem at any time but isn't mentioned either when pretty much it's a thing in almost every challenge run in a game that has currency, especially when you mentioned the RAM was maxed out and a lot of spare parts for the Elise were bought, and about the unlockables, would be nice if you mentioned where you unlocked the cars you used, or if one particular unlock would be used later or whatever, also missions are not available from the very start but this is being finicky (adding all footage things I suggested here and bellow wouldn't add much to the length of the video, even though I assume that's not a problem, and some of them don't require much effort but IMO improve the quality or make the video more comprehensive for someone who doesn't know much about the subject or played the game back in the days as kids). And being picky I also miss some little more expansion or brief highlights of the pre-run; a timmer and a view of the inputs could've been added since there is a lot of unused space in the overlay; and a brief introduction, especially of the instruments used or available, for example, if it was done in an original PS2 or emulator and why you chose so, the controller used, if original Dualshock 2, Xbox controller or wheel with pedals or whatever and advantages or disadvantages of those (but also at some point a mention or a brief explanation of the racing lines or generals about racing, for example, may be hard for some people to understand or figure out what's going on with the tinny mistakes you talk about that are so relevant when you change to street tires, I hope I explained myself ^^); also HD textures or better quality of the game itself would be nice if possible (I assume it was played in original hardware and not in an emulator). So thank you for the video! I'd love to see more of this challenge, maybe following the series towards 100% completion with separate videos for Special Events, Endurance races, all Manufacturer events, or whatever.
@Papamanual Жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for the big (and positive comment). So yeah, to address some of your queries, credits management wasnt a thing I put a lot of thought into when starting... However, the reason i did the driving missions was to to have extra cars to sell for more cash. Most cars I managed to get to work first time, but I did waste a decent amount of cash... Nevertheless, I believe it might actually possible (with a proper route) to do this challenge without having to grind for more money (aside from driving mission car sales)... I did twice grind for more money (buying the Chapparal 2J and then again to by the Mazda 787B and Nissan R390)... Another thing i had to grind for was getting to the correct day to buy the black LMP cars, but again with a proper route, you could probably do this easily before day 700 and less day grinding would be possible (also could potentially win with a different car that isnt a Black LMP) Basically all the cars I bought from used showrooms or the dealerships... I explained in my vid where necessary if I won a car that I ended up using (like the Nissan Motul Pitwork Z) Yes adding driving missions into the video would just make it more bloated imo... general audiences want to get straight to the point (see Mr Beast vids) I used emulator with basically stock settings since I dont own an NTSC ps2 and my PAL PS2 is broken. I dont know how to upgrade textures to HD or anything like that. And 100% completion with only 200 point races is impossible for a few of the 1-make events.

i don't think TCS assist is useful ever except on ridiculously over powered 2wd cars, you'll notice even when you have it lowered it fires off the flashing ! when you use NOS in a straight line, and at that point thats wasted horsepower. i'm not great at gran turismo by any stretch, but i always set tcs and acs to 0 with every car i buy, why would a 60s car have TCS? ect ect.

Just a tip, reducing the rear ride height (if you can) can regain any grip loss you may have from other setup changes. As a matter of fact, this effect is so exaggerated in GT4, I'd be careful not to overdo it and induce understeer.

Wow, this brought back a lot of GT memories about mostly aspects I hated. I remember the stupid opponents with 1 or 2 cars that were WAY faster and knowing it averaged the scores makes total sense. Some of these were WAY crazier than expected and it definitely showed you're used to grinding out challenges. I eventually played Forza 3 and 4, which while aren't perfect sims, had overall better physics/sound/interface and felt better in areas GT4 severely lacked. The 360 controller is vastly superior for trigger modulation and feel over the Dualshock. I now vividly remember how GT AI is slow AF in corners but somehow way faster in race cars with the fastest LM cars feeling like playing at 3x speed. Driving aids like traction and stability almost always are slower (they're too slow and thus sacrifice grip) IRL and in sims and can't lie people will think less of someone using them. I'd watch you try a Forza run (not horizon) but maybe the later Gran Turismo games greatly improved realism? Also, last thing, one huge handicap in more realistic racing games is that you're gonna way oversteer with the analog stick in corner entry especially and thus understeer losing a lot of time. I could never modulate steering with the sticks, maybe others can, but a wheel is ideal to input 20% steering instead of 100% and instantly losing front grip and just plowing wide. Not sure how much you're familiar with IRL driving dynamics but those are some of the big time losses in racing games. Anyway, nice vid and seriously impressed with how hard some of those races were!

Are you playing on PCSX2? If you turn clamping mode to full it won't say full throttle or get ready at the bottom during the race. Also, in the game's screen settings, setting to 480 Progressive (I think it's called that? whichever is the one between 480p and 1080p) will make the video much clearer

Oh, just realized it looks like you fixed the clamping issue, the other fix might still help

Why didn't you turn off the assists? It slow down a lot, especially the FF cars at the exit, and I belive assists affects the points.
