Before I was born, my grandma and grandpa got (if I remember correctly) a ~50k settlement after my grandpa was injured on the job. Practically all of it went to Benny Hinn. Only a couple years later my grandpa died of cancer and my grandma is currently in what is essentially hospice care from her MS and cirrhosis. Despite the fact they gave THOUSANDS over the years to these vultures and saw nothing in return in the way of health or wealth, my grandma still believes in them and I find her watching “prosperity” preachers often. Since she is in my mom’s care, my mom had to start hiding her credit cards around 2016 to stop her from spending more money on these people when she noticed large sums of money disappearing and my grandma admitted to sending them more. These people are the scum of the earth and will never see the heaven they preach for scamming desperate, innocent people

I had a professor who was hardcore anti-televangelist. Despite that, when he ended up falling ill with a debilitating disease that left him wracked with pain for years, he found himself so desperate that when watching one of these Televangelist shows he ended up following through with it just because he was so desperate for relief. Thats what these people do. They prey upon the ill and desperate. They’re horrible.

​@@finchrollah8656You'd be surprised how drastic people change due to fear or desperation. My mom was not the best person growing up, but she was very open minded compared to other people around us. She raised me Christian, yet we always lit a menorah every year to celebrate Hanukah because my mother wanted me to be aware of the other religions around us at the time (lot of Jewish kids where I grew up apparently). She let me learn about reincarnation and even said she can see it being a possibility from shit I said as a small child. She refused to take me to church and didn't watch any televangelist because she saw that stuff as manipulative and not necessary to pray/worship God. Then she got sick. She had a chronic lung infection that was non tuberculin in origin. She began coughing up blood and was petrified. Shortly after that, she began reading the bible more, started cutting out all music that wasn't gospel, and fell prey to televangelism. Nowadays, she's a completely different person and refuses to admit they're bad people. She puts herself in danger to go to bible study every week (can't see at night when she drives). She cannot miss a single donation. I've had to toss their letters to her at this point the moment I see them in the hopes they'll stop sending them after some time without donations. My mom was never like that before, but fear of death made her turn into what she never wanted to be. We all think we'd be different and not become like these poor souls, but we're just as likely under the right circumstances.

This predatory christian tradition goes back hundreds of years. That was the main complaint Martin Luther had with the catholic church in the 6th century. Church officials were selling worthless papers with written dispensations to the poorest of the poor slaves/serfs so the serfs could get relatives out of the make believe pergatory. Great because Osteen's church didn't 'lock people out' or any such thing. Nor was there any emergency flooding around their church. The few staff that were there CORRECTLY told people that they did not have any kind of emergency facilities and weren't made to be a shelter of any kind. Mack even dispatched company trucks around the city to aid with rescues in high-water areas. This is a dude with a lot of money who does the right thing by giving money to relief funds, charities, but also teaming up with organizations when shit gets rough so people have shelter to go to.

Jesus tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and that all the essential things we need will come additionally. The kingdom of God is similar to what this world wants, a place where people with excess give to people in want, where the rich use their money to help the poor, where those with extra clothes dress those without. That is what Jesus calls us to do. And he tells us to reach out to those heading to hell and show them the glorious light of the gospel. Because what would it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul. I'm not religious, and I've never felt compelled to rely on faith healing, but I was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disorder as a teenager. Every time I have flare ups and I'm writhing in bed in excruciating pain or itching EVERYWHERE for HOURS, it makes you irrational and incredibly desperate. I think I'm a well adjusted and mentally stable person, but when nothing else helps and you're in chronic pain, I could absolutely convince myself to sell EVERYTHING just for the prospect of getting a few minutes of respite. Preying on people at their lowest and most unstable part in their lives is vile. I would genuinely put these people up with child abusers in a tier list of horrible people.

Pope Clement I (c.a. 100 A.D.) urged Christians to give their offerings systematically, thus following God’s laws. And seeing as the Catholic Church is the biggest charity in the world (you don’t have to take my word for it just google it) I have no reason to doubt them. I think the option to give to other charities is nice for those that maybe have a specific cause they want to help with.

Born and raised Catholic and went to every Sunday mass, the first time I encountered the word "tithe" was when I played a Simpson's-themed monopoly. Never felt pressure to give when the offertory basket was passed, felt like it was always understood that it was a matter of discretion and there was no guilt or judgment if you couldn't give any. Found it weird when I learned other Christian churches mandate a 10% offering, since this practice was from an old law specific only to the Levites and not required in the New Testament. But then again, those are one of the many weird things that happen when people interpret scripture for themselves with no historical or theological context.

Jesus basically directly states that rich people don't go to heaven, categorically. A camel would easier fit through the eye of a needle, than for that to happen. And it makes sense in his ethical system. You are supposed to give everything you have for the sake of others, because ultimately what happens to you in life doesn't matter. Do as best you can, even if it kills you and you will be exponentially rewarded for it afterwards. Being rich means hoarding wealth that could instead be in the hands of those in need doing good. But another thing to note is, Jesus doesn't know our idea of hell. He talks about sinners being destroyed, not tortured. They get to die a second time, while the virtuous live forever.

Several interpretation I've heard is that it's specifically for the church at the time that it is forbidden, because there were several rules and traditions from the time that were based on / made specifically for how the general people at the time would perceive them. Kinda like how some people interpret men having long hair as being something you should not do but others saying g it's fine. But idk I've never gone that deep into the question I've just heard a few arguments back and forth about it. To be honest I don't think that particular pastor cared one way or the other about what the Bible actually said anyway

There's a difference between a scam and a grift. A scam is predicated almost entirely on falsehoods and fabrications, usually carried out under a false identity or alias by the perpetrator. A grift can be based on falsehoods but typically goes through legal loopholes to pull off immoral and/or malicious activities ( though illegal activity often takes place just beneath the surface), typically in broad daylight and in open view of the public. I was taken away from my parents very young and raised in more foster homes than I can remember. Some fosters would give you back to the state for the dumbest reasons but I EARNED this return lol.... I was 9yo and my newest fosters were hardcore thumpers. We attended church on Wednesday night, Saturday night and Sunday morning. ABSOLUTELY HATED IT! Anywho...my fosters were all geeked out because some famous pastor was visiting their church and doing a "laying on of hands" to heal people and crap. They made me go up on the stage and stand in line facing the crowd. The pastor was asking kids questions and then touching them on the forehead and every single kid fell backwards and started flopping like fish. Until he got to me. He asked me what I wanted to fix and I said I just wanted to be adopted and he started speaking in tongues and smacked me in the head. I didn't fall down and start flopping which pissed off the fosters and the pastor. So what did that POS do? He f*cking pushed me, a 9yo kid! They had to pull me off of him, lol. My fosters got rid of me a few days later.
