@@fore101 In the courtroom it was the only statement like that. I heard no other. As Breivik in Norway hunted down and killed over 70 mostly young persons at one day, hateful statements by the victims relatives were very rare. The society also reacted mostly not in a hateful manner. They explicitly decided not let this terrible hateful act poisoning their hearts. This is a big cultural difference. The US has a huge problem with their dedication to violence and death.
@HeatherBarks2 жыл бұрын
can I ask- why do you think that's the better way? why *shouldn't* a school shooter receive these kinds of words, especially from the parents of the victims he shot and killed? in my humble opinion, "rude and hateful comments being very rare" means that shooter isn't getting the punishment they rightfully deserve for committing such a horrible thing.

To people who don’t know: Scott Beigel would have lived if he went into his classroom and locked the door like he was supposed to. Risking his own life, he held the door open to save as many students as possible who were stuck in the hallway (the other teachers shut and locked their doors, as was protocol). When he was shot while trying to follow the last student inside, he fell in such a way that his body was in the doorway. The hallway had poor visibility because of all the shooting (the dry wall turned into dust when shot and filled the air) so the killer likely only saw Scott entering the classroom. Cruz didn’t bother trying to move Scott’s body to search for students inside.* Scott’s last words as he bled out was telling the killer that there were no children in his classroom in a final desperate attempt to save their lives*. And he did, the children he held open the door to let into his classroom survived. He chose to exchange his own life for theirs. That is this woman’s son. ❤ Edit: (from one of the “hallway” students that Scott gave his life to save): ““Mr. Beigel was my hero and he still will forever be my hero. I will never forget the actions that he took for me and for fellow students in the classroom,” Kelsey told CNN. “I am alive today because of him. If I could see him right now ... I’d give him a huge teddy bear to say thank you. But, unfortunately, I can’t do that.”” Edit edit: I changed up the wording a tiny bit, it’s really hard to find a single consistent account of Scott’s death as eyewitness accounts vary on details, but I used info from the teacher across the hall and the students he saved. Both of these sources confirm that Scott gave his own life to save as many students as he could when he should have shut the door (which would have sacrificed the students stuck in the hall to the killer). The other teacher said she yelled to him to close his door, as the killer was too close (before closing her own), and stated: “We all heard a boy screaming in the hallway, “HELP! OPEN THE DOOR! HELP! LET ME IN!!!” But we couldn’t open the door. The shooter could still be on the floor. If I opened the door, I would put us all at risk. So we cringed every time we heard the screaming.” 2/17 student victims died while exposed in that same hallway. The total would have been higher if Scott hadn’t stayed with his door open to rescue every possible student. (The other teacher reports Scott physically pushing kids to safety as things got desperate). Finally, the stories of Scott telling the killer he had no children in his classroom were from the initial reporting from the event. Those records still exist, but I’m not sure if that story was ever officially confirmed. Regardless of the result, I do not think that this minimizes Scott’s heroism. My intention initially was to give a brief overview of Scott’s heroism so people had context, but I was getting knocked for the details so now this comment is a research paper. But I’m glad more people now know Scott’s story and that part was absolutely worth it:)

I love that Mrs. Beigel told him exactly what's waiting for him. I doubt his defense team warned him of what's next for him. Pure karma but I hope it's drawn out until he can't bare another moment but it continues past what he can bare. She’s a wonderful woman. I wish I could take her pain away. I was a school teacher, too. It takes a very loving and patient person to teach today. 💕 R.I.P., Scott. You did light the way for young minds.

Such a powerful speech. He deserves no redemption, he truly deserves hatred and fear. He is a monster a low creature. My heart goes out to all of these families and to this very brave and strong woman.

The families are very strong. I honestly couldn't imagine and pray to God I never have to go through what these innocent ent children and their families have went through. It's terrifying that we live in a world with people like Cruz. Walk past them everyday and never even know. Stay safe out there everybody. Love and cherish those close to you and those around you.

Justice is blind in court but the rancor in this mother’s voice is translucent vengeance on the loss of her son as he saved 33 kids at the loss of his life from his soulless murderer.

That was one of the most impactful victim statements I've ever heard! I've been married to a police detective for 33 years! I've heard & been privy to hundreds & hundreds of cases over the years, but this victim impact statement stands head & shoulders above the rest! I can tell you all, with 100% certainty, that what she said about how this monster will be treated in prison is absolutely correct! I have first hand knowledge of how child killers are "dealt with" in prison! Life in prison is a MUCH HARSHER sentence than the death penalty would have been! If he was sentenced to death, he'd most likely be isolated on death row & therefore protected from other inmates. With a "life sentence", he will absolutely have to look over his shoulder 24/7 for the next 70 years or so! Hopefully he will not make it that long! I trust that he won't! In the mean time, he's CERTAIN to become "Buba's girlfriend"😣 and then passed around like a platter of meat. He won't ever have another restful carefree day ever! ....for the rest of his miserable life! He will live in constant fear! I hope & pray that he at least lives 17 terror filled years! A year of "sheer terror & violence" for every life he took, then he can go rot in Hell where he will, hopefully re live the terror each victim felt, for all of eternity. THAT will be "just"!

This lady is smart and made a powerful statement she didn’t attack the jury or the defense but to the defendant. RIP Scott
