Thanks for this, it's amazing, just today I experimented with this filter to bake the lighting for a gun. Can't wait to do it properly and enable the pass through for metallic and rough.

Great video:). Very helpful. For as long as I have used Substance Painter that always confused me. I wasn’t quite sure what the pass through did:(. Thanks:)

Hi there thanks for the tutorial, a little help please. I can't find anymore the "create new empty layer" icon from the layers stack. Where has it been moved? Version 2020.2.2(6.2.2)
@Substance3D

It's still there in the same place, just renamed to Create New Paint Layer, with a different icon. docs.substance3d.com/display/SPDOC/Layer+Stack

How is your enable/disable layer coloured? I never noticed this in the latest version
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 5 жыл бұрын
This has been added recently: you can now select from a few colors to tint your layers. If that is what you mean?

Question, for stylized characters; do you go in with a high poly sculpt, retopo'ed and then bake it to a low poly mesh and then work with that? Or is it just a low poly mesh that is entirely hand painted with filters and effects added on. Is it impossible to use filters and generators without a baked normal if I started with only hand painting? I have a character I'm working on that is entirely hand painted for practice and it took me like 4x the time to do and its still missing a special something that makes it pop, I'm thinking I need to add in some prebaked lighting and maybe a few smart material or just normal material. But the entire texture is only the color map, no metal, roughness, or normals. How can I achieve this? Manually paint in the metal and roughness or is there some super secret auto generator or technique somewhere. I've been brute forcing it too much and need to start being more flexible. Most of the time I spent was manually drawing in the shine and glows as well as attempting to simulate metal and cloth without any baked ambient occlusion to help out.

It depends on your preference and style requirements. Some people swear by doing it all by hand, and would never use filters and automated systems: you see some people still only use Photoshop for that, some people switch halfway between Photoshop and Painter. Me (Laurens) I prefer to automate and handpaint as little as possible, which means you most definitely need highpoly and baking to be able to use Filters and Generators. I'm no handpainting expert though! This method might look a bit cleaner and less "artistic" compared to the first. As for your specific case: that special something is probably not going to be down to method or approach, but more down to your artistic eye and the style you are aiming for. I'd recommend to look at some awesome examples on Artstation, try to discern what makes it shine and pop compared to yours. Then the next time you start a project I would try to do a highpoly and go for a bit more of an automated method like I used in this video. Once you try and figure out both these approaches you'll be able to mix and match what works for you, but it sounds like you are already realizing 100% manual work is just not so feasible!

I'm not an expert in handpainted too I prefer automated and rely mostly on generator and add a slight touch of random handpainted like smudges, it is true you can achieve only one texture by baking the lightmap in the diffuse map good example for this was WoW asset go check that out, also you can check marc brunet he is former employee of blizzard maybe you can find your answer more for that workflow and art style you looking for.

is it compulsory to bake textures before applying textures?
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 5 жыл бұрын
Noi it's not, but you will lock yourself out from quite some options if you don't. A lot of filters and all generators only work with Bakes. Take a look at some of our baking videos to better understand this.

@@Substance3D to get rid of the patches after baking in substance painter , can I do automatic mapping in maya before that ...?
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 5 жыл бұрын
@@sarathczachariah2043 Not sure what you mean with "patches". If these are baking errors then yes you would have to go back to maya and fix things there. Again I suggest you watch some video's on baking textures: academy.allegorithmic.com/courses/fundamentals-of-baking-textures/youtube-ePnLTuzRAbg
