Paul Revere & The Raiders were a band that did not try at the least bit to be serious with performing their music. They did not try to be meticulous with lip syncing as all other artists did and as was mostly the norm for any acts performing on TV. In fact they purposely did the opposite and went crazy in making fun of it and they got away with that. They had a lot of good hits in the 1960s. Love the double-neck Mosrite guitar and the Vox Phantom bass.

Ha Ha Ha! I have not seen in a while how funny in the 1960 performances these guys were. Puts a smile on my face watching them via KZbin now and great then. A few of the long list of band members have passed on...two more noted players: Mike "Smitty" Smith on drums (1962 - 1967; 1971 and '72...died in 2009) & Drake "Kid" Levin on lead guitar (1963 - '67...died also in 2009) Yes, the founder, leader of the band, Paul Revere on keyboards (1958 - 2014) also passed away, in 2014. Lead singer, Mark Lindsay and saxophonist did his time with "The Raiders" from 1958 - 1975. Lindsay was one of the biggest "teen-girl to their 20's" idol favorites. I know...because one of my five sisters was crazy about him in the 60's.

One thing about Paul Revere And The Raiders back in the 1960's......their riffs, rhythms, groove, drive, vocalizations, compositions, phrasings, etc.....I mean, this stuff actually carries over very well in the modern-day, if you were to use more distorted guitars, heavier equipment and sonics. I could easily see a band like The Cult pulling-off a cover of this tune, and it wouldn't sound like "an old 60's rock tune just re-made in 2022". It would sound like it was written today. Timeless hard rock.

This song brings back memories of summers in rural Missouri. Our neighbors had a walled-in, lighted brick patio in the backyard that wasn't attached to the house. On some summer weekend nights, with the aroma of corn and cow wafting through the hot, humid air, blonde neighbor girl Cathy would bring her record player out there, we'd all bring our 45s (records, not guns!), and maybe a dozen of us highschoolers would have a dance, rockin' to tunes like this. Check out lead singer Mark Lindsey in a tricorn; he was quite the heartthrob for teen girls.

From what I know of the Raiders song catalog, I have to agree with you. All the meaty tunes were upfront early in their career with Smitty on drums, Drake on lead guitar, and Phil/Fang on bass. Met Fang and his band at Little America in Cheyenne, Wyoming after his Raiders' stint on a business trip in the 70's.

I always thought that the Raiders were the American version of the Stones. Then I checked the dates of their songs vs. the Stones' songs. It may have been the other way around. I know that's heresy, but check "Him or Me" in 1967 vs. "Satanic Majesties" in 1968. Not saying the Raiders were better than the Stones but it is interesting.

In 2024 fans forget how big Paul Revere and the Raiders had been. In the 1960’s there were 3 channels on tv and the Raiders dominated the tv market. Only my theory but I think Paul was mistaken to not support Drake, Smitty and Fang when they formed a group and left the Raiders. Because with Paul’s savvy business sense he could have launched Drake, Smitty and Fang into the stratosphere and rode their success in 1969 to 1974 as harder rock hit the big time and the pop Raiders fame waned a bit. Paul seemed to have been upset with Drake and the boys which made their chance of solo success less likely.

Notice Paul moving his keyboard in front of Mark at 00:29, so as to be in front of everyone. He was the "front" man, and by God he was going to be IN the front. Bands in those days had "frontmen", but the Raiders were unusual in that the frontman wasn't the lead singer. That had to bother Paul Revere since the band was suppose to be HIM and some unnamed backups. It didn't help that Mark Lindsay was one of the major teen heart-throbs of the era. I always figured Revere would have ridden himself of Lindsay... if he could have. Mark Lindsay sold a LOT of vinyl for the Raiders and made Revere quite wealthy.

Paul wasn't dumb. He could easily HEAR from a voice like Mark Lindsay's sounded like versus his own. The talent level was night and day. Even after Mark left, Paul hired front men singers while continuing the act. Ric Ocasek recognized a similar situation with Ben Orr. Every great CARS song was handled by Ben Orr with Ric's blessing. The lead singer still drives a band. Within him or her, you have nothing but the Ventures.

Pretty freakin' remarkable. Mark Lindsay was just an awesome rock vocalist who barely gets a mention compared to some other lesser folks. What also might be a bit overlooked is Drake Levin's epic hop and skip solo that is somewhat in the style of the solo in Louie Louie. Shows a real mastery of solo rock guitar. Underneath the shenanigans is a world class rock band.
