Second, please provide your definition of "own what you buy". Now contrast this with the current licensing of video games, and how video games were licensed up to the 7th generation of consoles (on at least PlayStation 2, I have no console experience with any other consoles of 7th gen or later, and the only other consoles I have experience with are Atari 2600, ColecoVision, NES, SNES, and PS1). I also have limited experience with PC CD-ROM games in the late 486 and early Pentium era generations of PC motherboards, and the licensing of those games at that time. @JoeFromSeattle - I'm stuck at 7th gen consoles, because I don't trust licensing terms from all console corporations, of all consoles and their games from 8th gen and later (patch culture doesn't help). However, Joe, one needs to remember that Valve ALSO is a major corporation, and the best marketplace to buy PC video games from - the problem with Valve is, the current licensing terms of PC games, as opposed to when I played PC games with purchased discs, means "own what you buy" doesn't mean "own" anymore. So, Joe, I want to go use Steam, but I trust Valve as much as I trust the Sonymicrotendo oligarchy (in other words, less than zero), because licensing is now "you 'own at our sufferance; pray we do not alter the deal further." I've been gaming on PC since 2017, but I've just started my first "real" PC game, Path of Exile 2. I am having an absolute blast. All kinda games I've been missing out on. I did try Diablo IV a little bit because all my friends got it, but I didn't like it at all. So glad that I gave POE 2 a chance. Still not playing with mouse and keyboard though. Controller is more than fine for my current character, but maybe I'll try mouse and keyboard with a different kind of character down the line.

I switched mostly because of FO4 mods. Once I got my fill of muscle bound Kate mods and Piper's Better Cheeks (don't ask), I discovered that sim racing is way better on PC. Now I am happy with PC gaming, and will never go back. Even if a future console is more powerful than my rig.

for those of us with spines turning into true dust, the "refugee" thing may technically be true. I grew up in the 90s and trying to get a pc back then would cost anyone an 8th mortgage, didn't help that you pretty much had to code half the programs yourself sometimes and that's even if your 8th mortgage got you decent hardware. computers were all about production back then, you wanted to play games consoles for a while were the best way to do that I'd say for many zoomers today though, those born maybe just after 2000 and are old enough to at least know how to build a PC or where to buy one, they've had much better options for hardware during their lifetime, zoomers aren't necessarily "refugees" there could be a few that have never played a console at all, at least apart from exclusives

Now that I reread the comment, the person is more likely to be a console peasant, but I have read some few and far between comments from PC players who chastize PC players who switched to PC from console instead of being on PC from the start.

My first console was a Atari 2600. My first PC was a Atari 800XL and I was also using the current consoles the Atari 5200 and the ColecoVision. My last console was the PlayStation 2 because in 2002 I joined the PC Master race and never look back

I mean, I started with a TI-99/4A which was sort of a computer/console hybrid that accepted both cartridges and which you could program yourself. From there we had both a Sega Master System and a 386DX PC. I've gamed on both console and PC all my life, except for very recently. This will be the first console generation I've sat out of entirely because there's just NOTHING there on consoles. All the unique and quirky and fun exclusives you could only find on consoles are just gone now - replaced by only a handful of production behemoth AAA slop, including first party titles which comes out on PC anyhow because they have to just to make back their budget. What reason is there left to own a console? Ease of use? PCs are so ridiculously plug & play now that you are a legit brainlet if you can't operate one. Couch play? SFF HTPCs are easier than ever to buy and build, and nearly every game has controller support - if not native, than through Steam's remapping tool. That slick simple console UI? Bazzite and SteamOS3. Please, help me find a reason to actually want to buy a console these days - aside from self hatred. I guess there is Nintendo, and I do own a Switch, but that's more of a last-gen system IMO and most of the time I forget I even have it because I don't want to pay Nintendo's absurd game pricing which never, ever, comes down - even on the aftermarket most times. If my Switch ever sees any real use in the future, it'll be because I finally stopped being lazy and finally got around to installing CFW and sailing the seas.

Im no refugee. I just ascended to a better platform (former console gamer since the Sega Master System/NES era in the 80's). Building my own PC's is just great!

i mean, the first game hooked me in was Stronghold crusader and AoE. also total war, and seeing how close to none of those genre exist in console, i moved. then i discover i can just use controller on pc, and i can just plug it to my TV, and emulation, and mods, and how it teach me to understand PC hardware in particular instead of sending it to SOME JACKASS that cost me alot, i can fix it myself.
