I would like to point out that this song is by far more impressive than people are giving it credit for. Notice how the song builds, utilizing the same progression, and melody, and translating it into a varied assortment of approaches. They go from soothing, to haunting, to heavy to just brutal then into an even more haunting progression only to be devastated further., all with the exact same melody and riffs, which cannot be done by most bands. Notice how Spencer's vocals dance around a traditional melody in the opening section and explode into a blistering squeal. I'd like to see any other singer pull 1:38 off without blowing a vocal chord. I personally love how 'Mike Patton-esque" Spencer sounds on this track. (I feel it is necessary at this point, to note that I have never really been a Spencer fan, but here he blows away any metal singer I have ever heard) If you need any further validation that this song is fucking awesome, look no further than 2:55, where the song changes both keys and time signatures and gets extremely sick. Sure, it is not instantly gratifying, but if everything was, then it would be boring. This is a perfect example of a band breaking the mould and pushing boundaries. I submit that this song is evidence alone that these upcoming releases will be the quintessential progressive release by Periphery. This song isn't 100% Brutal, 100% Djent, or 100% Metal. It is Progressive metal through and through. And I find it refreshing.

I can confirm that 1:38 is the MOST difficult vocal part on the album. Back when I was learning how to sing this, I was stuck on that particular part for a whole month!!!

@@Spititoutloud10 My dude I think you missed the point it's not all about vocal range it's the technique, try to slide up to that note while adding a scream factor in there (I'm not sure if it's fry or false chords I'm not an expert) it's hard to transition from singing smoothly into screaming like he did. If it comes down to it, it's better to have massive control of your voice. Spencer for sure has control and and range, which makes him a great vocalist. I am an Alto and I can definitely testament from previously being a Soprano. I'm sure you knew what you were saying, and I'm in no way downplaying your talent!!

Dead wind swirling beneath these prayers I hide I'd give my life for a taste of what lies beyond in that place now Live Earth rising beneath these hands untied I'd leave my life on the line Never one of them I am not free Survive I will survive Glass ceilings above drop rage upon them Stone cold fist and a memory Running on the blunt end of a blade The blood that it spills shall start my serenade to you I will survive Survive

I very rarely comment on KZbin, but can I just say that all the negativity and arguing and trolling is really really draining. We're lucky that a band like Periphery formed in the first place, among many other things we're lucky for, living in first world countries and all. You know, like even having an internet connection? Yet here on this comment section there's a whole bunch of people (not all of course) that are just acting so shit and saying some really over the top shit about a personally fulfilling creation made by a group of really passionate and talented musicians who have proved themselves as consummate professionals in many different areas of expertise, as well as on many big stages all over the world. You're allowed to not like the music, but no one especially the band members themselves are forcing you in any way, shape or form to listen to it at all. Please think logically guys. As fans of progressive metal, or any form of metal really, we're generally supposed to pride ourselves on our love for music and our love for the intricacies of a well written song. It would be great to uphold the reputation of being a talented and knowledgeable sub-culture. This is a darker more brooding sounding track, for what is probably a dark, emotive and very expansive album. If you sat in the studio with the guys and watched them track this album from start to finish, your perspective on how much work is involved and how lucky we are to hear this music would change a great great deal. Even if you didn't personally like a song for some reason or another, you'd never even consider being as rude as some of the people have been on this comments section. Peace out and take it easy everyone. Killer music, and the rest of the album will slay hard no doubt. Outties.

I already see the "Not Heavy Enough" comments uprising. Periphery isn't a band that only plays dark heavy riffs/music, They play all kinds. Heck they even do a mix most of their time in their songs. If you don't like their music cause it's not heavy enough, go listen to Born Of Osiris or something. The music or band you're looking for is not Periphery. Anyway, this is only 1 song in the many that exist in Juggernaut.

I may be totally alone in this(doubt it), but I would love to play a video game with music created by you guys. There is so much raw talent in this band that I think the experience in a game like Final Fantasy or a similar RPG would be enhanced with your talents. Do not get me wrong, the music on Final Fantasy has been a favorite of mine since I first began that not-so Final Fantasy, but you guys have made music that definitely fit the style. I'd say an action game, where your brutality could shine, but the atmosphere you guys create in every album fits an RPG so much more. And after tracks like this, and of course Prelude Bombfare? I am beyond sold. Please make this happen. I don't care if it's My Little Pony, I'd buy it for the soundtrack. Plus, my daughter would love it!

You know, djent/progressive deathcore/whatever you call it, is up for the artists interpretation. Periphery has their own style, Monuments has their own style, etc. I would rather that each artist interprets the genre/subgenre their own way rather than every band being a cookie-cutter copy of one another. Stop arguing about which djent band is better. In fact, stop arguing about the superiority and inferiority of bands regardless of genres. It takes the fun out of music when everything is a damn competition.

This song scares the hell out of me. I've been listening to it since it first dropped and although I always enjoyed it it hasn't been until recently that I've just gotten chills from it. There is so much raw emotion in both the instrumentation and Spencer's vocal performance. Especially after 2:25 you can just feel the song take flight. Spencer's delivery is so deliberate and intentional, he really seems to be a master at knowing how to deliver his vocals and in my opinion that's a rarity with a lot of modern metal vocalists. There is such a theatrical epic feel to this song. I'm beyond stoked for the album to drop. First album since Coheed and Cambria's The Afterman that I can honestly say I've been counting down the days for.

This may be my favorite song of the two albums not only because of how good the song is itself but where it comes in on the album and story. This is definitely a breaking point for the main character and listening through the album up to 1:45 and finally at 2:29 is one of the most intense moments I've ever experienced while listening to music. I would love to hear another concept album from Periphery because they've proven they know how to tell a story.

Am I the only one who's favorite song released so far is this one? The other two are good but I think people look at these songs individually than as a piece in a whole album. This feels the most cinematic and emotional out of all of them Spencer fucking nails this song with note selection to convey the perfect emotion and atmosphere. It starts slowly luring you into a darker passage then Spencer starts screaming and singing into that dark ass section in the middle the gives you a calm before the storm. Spencer the just explodes with his vocals and that last shriek he gives just feels like the character is trying to escape some sort of thing. The instrumentals just make the song feel like your walking towards your doom and groovy at the same time. This song was perfect the complaints comes from the tech metal fans not the ones anticipating a concept album, a cinematic story.

I'll contribute to the speculation, based on the little information we have right now. Personally, I think the story will include some kind of ancient evil, released during this song. "Now that the entrance is opened wide, this black all around makes its way inside", If you look at some of the pre-order bundles with t-shirts, one has some kind of awful creature on it, presumably what happens when you get infected by "The Scourge", or some entity responsible for the scourge. Spencer screams what sounds "I am now free" at 2:27, possibly as the voice of whatever the monster is. The Omega artwork has what looks like a cabin in the woods with the ground beneath it cracking open. Presumably, the protagonist does something in the cabin that inadvertently releases the scourge, and he has to find some way to defeat it.

Wow, so many shitty fans, negative opinions and assumptions off of a teaser song out of 17 songs? If you're actually a Periphery fan you wouldn't be complaining about this song, you would have already known that the new material was going to be different and something fresh apart from P1 and P2, and that they were going to take Juggernaut in a new direction musically and creatively and Clear was a preview of that which was a mini concept EP. They are not trying to copy there previous work and do stuff they already did in the past and repeat history so I don't see the big surprise here. This song isn't bad, it's just different then what you expected from Periphery(which is a good thing), it's still periphery but in a new direction. I like the song personally and can't wait for more teasers.

Periphery Solid work, gentlemen. Might I suggest a few tips though? I wish you'd incorporate more quad-polymetric algorithms and dissonant quarter-step freudian scales. Most proto-post-melodic bands from Sweden understand the importance of this, and have reasoned out the stagnancy of neo-classical contemporary modes through scrutinizing referentialism and heterophonic schizophasia, (because let's face it, song structure is a 20 year old dog in human diapers). Few bands from the states have followed suit to this turn of events (see Behold The Arctopus), but unfortunately have little to no positive reception from the masses. As for mixing/production, I strongly prefer the direction that your fellow contemporaries in the underground djent scene are "setting sail in", as the youth says these days. Though an individual who simply follows the common fad might claim it is repetitive, they understand the consistency of a mix with richly reverb-saturated snare triggers, and high-gain high-pass filter trimmed rhythm tones (see also: the Steve Urkel preset). But to wrap this up, I highly recommend studying metatextual chromatic patterns to better understand music theory from the roots. It could really help you better understand monism in a musical context. Cheers! :) tips fedora*

Pretty much every gripe I've had with Periphery doesn't apply to this track. Sure their old riffage was insane, but this song actually carries an idea and goes somewhere in 4 minutes rather than just being a mish-mash of djent rhythms. All of that makes 2:55 feel even heavier just because of the musical context. I'm pumped for this album now. Way pumped.

The Scourge is a single track off of a PAIR of CONCEPT ALBUMS. Take one song out of context from a concept album, and of course you're going to be disappointed. Misha has said that Juggernaut is the album they've wanted to make for a while, and finally had the ability to. Periphery isn't trying to compete with genre or style or another artist. Periphery is a collection of musicians creating the way that they want to, and that's way better than the empty, metallic, djent noises that pervade the rest of the genre.
@Codence66610 жыл бұрын
Periphery has never let me down with any of their music, ever. Everything fits together so perfectly, they just make you FEEL. Sounds sinister as fuck. I know it's only a snippet, but Misha wasn't kidding when he said that this album would sound different. I'm sure there will be songs that are more reminiscent of the Periphery that people are used to, but Periphery is capable of covering such a huge spectrum stylistically that nothing should really be a surprise anymore. I'm real interested to know what the rest of the album will be like. People are already starting to bitch and moan, but how can you be so quick to pass so much judgment without even knowing how this song ties into the album, let alone it's respective disc? There's nothing wrong with criticism, but some of the claims that people are making/conclusions that they're jumping to are downright ridiculous.

This comes off as one of the darker, more vocal-centric tracks on the whole collection. Spencer's vocals simply work for the band. Their powerful, emotive, and loaded with variety and dynamics. The guitar work is dark and powerful, as well, something that this band should be very proud of. The drums are great and complimentary, as they take a back seat to the outstanding vocal delivery. I'm sure there will be others similiar to it (but not exactly the same), but its a great step in the right direction. For every "djent" band trying to recreate Periphery's first record, Periphery are crafting first-rate progressive metal with their own stamp on it. In other words, it's "kvlt" and "tr00" enough.

Another reversed mix album... Misha could you swap the left-right mix of the drums next time so us drummers can visualise Matt playing as opposed to hearing a live performance :P (not that he'll ever see this, why am i trying)

I get why people tend to hate the Djent label, its because there are loads of musicians that just takes the stereotypes and try to profit from doing what 1000 more people are doing. There are only a very view actual 'extended range metal' bands that really have their own thing but man, Periphery. Those guys just keep fcking reinventing music every single time. Its so amazing and just when you thought you heard it all they release this... Its so incredibly epic. And best of all, its so incredibly new!!!

Lyrics: (as far as I can make out) As I sit with eyes heavy, omens clear Face down in seclusion, the evil steer What drives the stake within my heart? This man he fell apart Now that the entrance is open wide This black all around makes it way inside What have you done? Will hate abide? Where is my death invitation? Elation? Dead wind swirling beneath these prayers I hide I’d give my life for a taste of, taste of, what lies beyond that damn place now Fire burns, rising beneath these sins I’m tied` I leave my life for the void I am the slave Survive I will survive Glass ceilings above drop rage upon them Crashing upon them Stone cold fist and a memory running on the bloodstains of a blade The blood that is spilled shall start my serenade to you I will survive I will survive Survive!

I think my favorite thing about Periphery and why they've become one of my all-time favorite bands is because they write complicated and intricate yet simplistically all at the same time. Which means I think it sounds good on my first listen, but I usually don't get the true vibe of the song until I've listened to it for a while longer. It's rare to find a group that can write both complicated and catchy songs on the same album let alone do it in the same song. This album doesn't sound quite as catchy as P2 or Clear, but I can tell it's one of those albums that's going to keep getting better each time I listen to it. Can't wait for the full album to drop and I'll see you on tour in ATL! Much love and respect Mark, Misha, Jake, Spencer and crew!

Periphery: The Musical

Periphery proves to me yet again that they are true masters of melody and metal. I've been listening to the first albums practically nonstop since I heard All new materials, years back. And I'm still loving every second of it. Only the second band that ever achieved to do that to me. The first being danish rock legends Dizzy Mizz Lizzy. Different genre, but they knew their shit too. Or actually knows since they're coming back. Its gonna be a great year for music in 2015.

At the beginning I wasn't completely sure it was Spence. Then the growl came and I was sure. Still, is this it? The cleans were close to too cleanly in PII. Now it's downright pop.

Clean vocals does not mean it's pop music. If you want something brutal for the sake of being brutal, don't listen to periphery.
@jmanis9210 жыл бұрын
LeMortalPanda You are right cleans vocals don't mean pop, but the way spencer sings is very poppy to be honest. I feel like with each album periphery releases he makes them more poppy.
@CEMETARYKING10 жыл бұрын
It's his own style so it's pretty normal. He's a pop vocalist converted into a metal vocalist.
@michaelstewart446110 жыл бұрын
So, wait, clean singing with no grit added equals pop? Is it because they have bluesy notes? So bluesy vocals are pop?

Before everyone goes off on a tangent about this song (good or bad), remember Juggernaut is supposedly a fully blown concept album (read: Metropolis Pt.2 or Ayreon, etc) so a single 250 second passage isn't really representative of the entire album, since it's supposed to be listened to in it's entirety

I'm honestly confused as to why there is hate or even dislike on this song. You are all entitled to your opinions, but I personally am in love with the haunting beauty found in The Scourge. The entire song building up to the climax at the end gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and this is one of my new favorite Periphery songs. Really has me psyched to hear the rest of the albums.

Yo, so check this out. Because this is part of a concept album (part of a story), and this particular track happens in the middle of the album, I didn't want to hear it out of context. Regardless of that, I still wanted to be in on what the P was up to! So I muted this bitch and started browsing those comment sections, and here's what the song seems to all be about; David Draimen and Corey Taylor have combined, and now collectively have a much higher voice register, which apparently has sexual preferences towards other voices of the same gender. As David Taylor sings over a backwards drummer, mark and jake are playing a trance remix of a darkthrone song in the back of a cave, while Misha strums a single, drowned out power chord on a cool guitar. Dolan plays a guest solo at 1:56. Sounds awesome! I'm too pumped.

Periphery's self titled got me hooked, Periphery II was great until the similar style to the previous album started getting old and uninteresting, but this is new and different. It'll be very interesting to see what they have done on the rest of these songs, cause I'm enjoying this sense of freshness. I don't want a carbon copy of Make Total Destroy or Racecar. They are absolutely phenomenal songs, but each member has far to much talent to waste it on unoriginal, lazy material.

A lot of the criticism on this seems to be on the style not being like the first album, particularly the vocals. The first album was a lot faster, utilized more harsh vocals, and was a bit more "crazy". I think they've evolved to become more sophisticated and varied stylistically, and that's progression, I think. Spencer is a great vocalist for both styles. The first album had a lot more of a Messhugah-ish influence with the speed, and added more melody to that speed. Now, they're using that style but adding other styles of prog into it (Dream Theater pretty strong influence) and I feel like on the album they will have a very good balance of the two.

These guys are amazing musicians, to me. They have made it clear time and time again that they will do what they want. They are musicians. If you want music for the masses, listen to more pop stuff. Even then, some pop music is beautiful. Look at Lady Gaga's solo piano stuff, she is a "better" musician then most of us.... I believe the musical world will see a day where genres and bias is dissolved and people appreciate music for what it is. Vibrations triggering emotions. I literally love all music. I listen to Tune Yards, for fucks sake. And I write fun guitar stuff. I love all music, and you people should try it. It's fun. You get pissy less often.
