The Philly Shell boxing style is often misrepresented by people who have no real experience in it. The subject is one that gets much attention from boxing fans and fans of popular fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr and others. No style other than the Peek A Boo style gets as much fanfare, so it is to the benefit of You Tubers to post click bait that includes references to it. The style is seen as being passive and it certainly is not! It is not DEFENSIVE nor OFFENSIVE! The PHILLY SHELL BOXING STYLE is COUNTER OFFENSIVE! What that means is that you often do DRAW (FEINT) your opponent into throwing the punch, but your COUNTER or RESPONSE is not a single shot, but a STRING of punches! That is why the style itself is best explained and used as one that is COUNTER OFFENSIVE.
In this video, I give a brief look at how the COUNTER OFFENSIVE nature of the style looks and functions. Enjoy, S. Carman

TO THIS FORUM: I AM BACK DOING WHAT I DO! I DO NOT SPEAK FROM NOSTALGIA, I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR DOING. NOSTALGIA FOR YOUR ETHNIC BACKGROUND OR THOSE OF YOUR RACE WILL NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF LACING THEM UP.

Colbert is fun to watch. Actually abit of a brawler when he wants to be. Broner was always better coming forward in my opinion.

Nice explanation. I also thought that philly shell is defensive. I hope you can also explain the style of Nicolino Locche.

Earned a new subscriber. Many people sleep on Broner, I was watching him spar J'leon love and he even hit him with Dominick Cruz's dart.

Tremendous advice. As someone who feels very comfortable in a Philly shell but is also an aggressive fighter I sensed there was some sort of contradiction there. This video helped me understand it much better

I agree with you AB is more talented than Floyd, and Chris Colbert is extremely underrated. And I believe with a little more experience and pop in his punches he might far out exceed his peers of his generation. One quick question how can a Southpaw Fighter use the Detroit Rock 🪨

thanks to listening to your recommendation, I found out old school boxers could use the supposedly "defensive" Philly Shell to slip in invade their opponents' space so aggressively - you'd never think it could be this lay-back style it is today.

Welcome back. I like counter offensive styles. Offensive meets counter-offensive, makes for a good looking fight. I wasn't even born before the new millenium, but having peeked at the fights of the glory days, I already miss it. I wonder if you have anything to say regarding the Pacquiao vs. Spence Press Conference that happened today.

Coach what are your thoughts on undefeated short, undersized heavyweight Rocky Maciano? Many say he is overrated that benefitted from a weaker or past their prime opponent base at his time. How was he able to take advantage of such short arms against guys like Ezzard Charles?

From the way you explain it, this makes a lot of sense. In fact I see a lot of opportunities for clinching and throws, sweeps and takedowns outside of boxing in your demonstration. considering I've seen traditional styles use guards that resemble philly shell and they emphasize a lot on transitioning to a clinch and takedowns, it makes sense on it being counter offensive.

I often wondered if bare-knuckle boxers back in the day used this technique. Or is it only good with boxing gloves?

@@hereandnow8578 Yes, BK boxers can use it, but it takes steady nerves, and the ability to read PUNCHLINES (The angle a punch is taking) because you do not have the security of the glove.
