Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth book in JK Rowling’s massively popular book series, and dives into the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince, Voldemort’s backstory, the assassination of Dumbledore and the teenage romance occuring between the characters at Hogwarts. The movie though seems to spend a whoooooooole lot of time on the romance.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince raises a lot of questions. Like why not use the Felix Felicis liquid luck potion immediately? Or why not use the Truth Serum on Slughorn rather than create a super elaborate plan and hire him as a teacher? Can’t the Weasley’s stop their house from burning down? Do Harry and Ginny have any chemistry whatsoever?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Something that they changed in the movies was what actually happened in that bathroom scene. In the books Harry (obviously not knowing what the spell did and shocked) does everything to keep Draco alive and is actually concerned, and it’s honestly a sad scene because Draco’s in a lot of pain and Harry’s crying and frantically trying to fix him and get help. Movie Harry was just like “ok I’m just gonna leave you dying on the floor, have fun!”

That, and he actually does get in trouble for it in the book. He has to spend every Saturday for the rest of the year in detention (which even means he has to miss the final Quidditch match of the season, and - since he drops out at the end of the book - the last Quidditch match during his time at Hogwarts). It wasn't really added...the teenage romance was in the book too. To be fair though, HP (even in the books) was never just about Voldermort, it was also about the growing characters and their interactions. By film 6, they'd barely given Ginny any screentime and Ron and Herminone's story was stale. There was a need for relationship development. I don't think the director made the wrong call, the problem was the delivery. There could have been a bit less teen angst to allow more space to the half-blood prince storyline.
@gianellab.4953
@gianellab.4953 Жыл бұрын
@@Wurzelknecht The Harry/Ginny disaster started in the second film though. It happened because movie Ginny was never more than an insignificant 2D background character. No matter what Yates would have done in film 6, the couple would have been a fail. She should have been fleshed out and the romance thought through earlier on. Instead, the couple became an afterthought (like in the books).
@Wurzelknecht
@Wurzelknecht Жыл бұрын
@@gianellab.4953 He had the chance to start it in film 5, where the development also starts in the books. Ginny is barely mentioned in Prisoner of Azkaban and only gets her first few glimpses of growing up in Goblet of Fire, but it's in Order of the Phoenix where she begins to be a part of the group and her character or more precicely how much she has developed since book 2 is fleshed out. But for some reason all of her lines are given to Hermione. Even her introducing Luna to the group which makes no fucking sense. Why would Hermione know Luna fucking Lovegood, who's a year below her and in Ravenclaw? And even if we pretend she's in Harry's year in the movies, then why would Hermione need to introduce her to Harry and Ron? They would've had lessons with her for four years, and she's not exactly someone who goes unnoticed by her classmates. It was just a glaring oversight by either Yates and/or his screenwriter to kill all of her screentime, when they had to know that she would become Harry's love interest going forward, as book six had been out for a while by that time. But even then, the way they wrote the scenes in film six were just cringeworthy. The room of requirement scene was just awkward and bad, while in the book it's a passionate kiss in the spur of the moment after winning the Quidditch cup. Btw. I actually liked that Halfblood Prince had so much stuff going on besides Voldemort, as it had this feeling of "calm before the storm" and was a good excuse to let us experience one last proper year at Hogwarts before all went to hell at the end. It was the last time the characters could relax at least for a little bit and be normal teenagers (as normal as Harry could ever be) before reality bit them in the ass again.

The battle is being held between Death Eaters, students, teachers and even Order of the Phoenix members, who were standing guard at the school. So there was actually a lot of chaos and destruction - this was a major battle, they didn't sneak unharmed and unheard of, like it was in the movie. Overall Half-Blood Prince is the worst movie adaptation of any of the Harry Potter books by FAR.

I mean, the entire magical world considers life rather worthless. Let's not forget they are basically a global conspiracy manipulating and often endangering the lifes of countless "muggles" without accountability or oversight or democratic justification. Umbridge could just restructure the entire school and torture kids without official repurcussion. They released mindless soul-sucking monsters and punished Harry when he stopped one from killing someone innocent. The fact there is only one Voldemort is a joke, given the hatred for Muggles even in modern Hogwarts, just in Slytherin alone. If this was real, millions of muggles would be unknowingly enslaved my mages.

I think the problem with the Harry Potter movies is that by the time they had to do HP4, they found out there was way too many pages to translate to a 2 hour movie, and had to cut some parts (like nearly every book to movie translation of a non-children book) and cut the wrong parts that didn't have to, like the Harry and ginny story, that started in HP5 (although that book was a brick). I think that's part of the reason I love HP3, it had the perfect length to do a 2 hour movie without cutting substantial parts of the story (besides, Cuaron was the best director they could have chosen to do that movie)

Don't have time for 2000 words, but 1) Slughorn is the Potions Master and former Head of Slytherin. He will be needed once Snape ascends to Headmaster. Dumbledore can't afford to piss Slughorn off, because otherwise Voldemort would install another teacher in his place, should he leave. Slughorn has also demonstrated rudimentary Occlumency abilities (as seen in the altered memory), which means that forcibly taking the memory might not be possible. 2) Liquid Luck (Felix Felicis) can cause serious side effects, should the drinker imbibe too much. Additionally, it doesn't necessarily grant one the ability (or inclination) to brew more. It seems to work mainly by heightening intution and propelling the drinker towards desireable outcomes. Great video, though. Very funny as always.

While we're at the "actually, in the books" stuff, Harry does suggest truth serum but Dumbledore points out that Slughorn is a brilliant potions master and he knows Dumbledore wants that memory, so he'll almost definitely have an antidote on hand at all times.

I'm just rereading the books now and here's a fun fact. Harry at no point casts any spells to help him get the Philosopher's Stone. In fact he doesn't cast any spells on screen in any part of the first book.
@jackaguy
@jackaguy Жыл бұрын
A lot of the plot holes in this are explicitly addressed in the books. E.g. Harry brings up the idea of giving veritaserum to Slughorn and Dumbledore says that even setting aside the ethical issues with that he's pretty sure Slughorn carries around an antidote.
@AndrewCheshire

@@jackaguy A LOT of things addressed in the books aren't mentioned in the movies, and the movies expect you to know the books to keep up. My favorite example is Peter Pettigrew is NEVER referred to as Wormtail in PoA, and then ONLY referred to as Wormtail from GoF and onward, with no explanation.

If my school had stairs that move and sometimes left spaces without railing or fence to prevent students from falling to their deaths I might teach them to Apparate sooner or make the portrait passwords available to every student in the school. I don't recall anyone ever using portraits in the movie or book series apart from the Fat Lady, but in the games Harry is able to use them all the time.

It barely even applies, though. Ministry is on watch for spellcasting in front of potential muggle witnesses. Doubt there's a means to detect where magic newspapers are taken. And the only problem at all is if someone notices the pictures moving. Girl at diner does, but dismisses it as her own imagination. What's the worst that can happen if someone gets more curious about the pictures?

So... Liquid Death (or as it's called in the books Draught of Living Death) doesn't actually kill people. It's a sleeping potion that puts the drinker into a state of suspended animation. This is actually one of the few lessons they have that isn't either deadly or extremely morally questionable

Thank you for mentioning that bit about The Millenium Bridge, it is a slightly confusing bit in the films ...however the HP nerd in me wants to say it is a good contender for the bridge (in the books) that does fall down, I believe the quote in the books from the Muggle PM is "that silly bridge" and an unfinished quip along the lines on 'if any bridge in London was going to fall down...'
