I have been caring for my mother who has Alzheimer’s since 2013. She has of course slowly gotten worse over that time. In the fall of 2022 we purchased a 12X12 light panel with both red led’s and near infrared led’s. Watching videos on KZbin I had deduced that using this light might help her. She had gotten to the point where her ability to swallow was a problem and she no longer smiled. Since using this light over her head twice a day (1 inch above her hair) for 30 minutes, she is able to swallow much better and she began smiling again on occasion. Her Alzheimer’s hasn’t gotten much worse in that time period. We also began giving her MCT oil in her food at about that time. The studies I’d seen were using very expensive helmets which I wasn’t sure would be worth the cost, however this panel is only about $50 dollars and was worth a try. We’re glad we did.

Dr. Glen Jeffrey (University College London) is a researcher on infrared. Would be a good guest to drill down on some of the nuanced questions. My understanding from him, is that being outside in the shade is adequate for IR effects. I switched back to low energy incandescent bulbs inside and red tinted bedside - ditched the LEDs. Working on sleep optimization, which for me means not eating late and little to no alcohol (especially late). I can feel the negative effects of later meals, after 6p, or alcohol, although a glass of red with a good early meal seems OK. My Oura ring sleep tracker clearly shows the downside with lower REM and disrupted sleep cycles.

Thanks for this episode Chris. I obsessed about RLT for a while before purchasing a RLT device. It puts out 630, 660, 810, 830, 860,1050 and has been approved by the FDA as a class 2 medical device. Been using it for several months and since I don't test my opinion is anecdotal. That said I think my skin is happier with reduced liver spots, fewer wrinkles on top of that the excitement of the mitochondria is supposed to be helping my energy/general health. I too was skeptical of the wuwu factor but found it an interesting topic after obsessing about it in an unscientific way that treats those trying to sell you something and those just in it for the knowledge with way different weights. The industry is huge and in our capitalist society much of it is about the almighty dollar, ethics be damned. JUst the feeling of being under an infrared heater is very pleasurable and somewhat addicting. My next obsession is infrared saunas. Talk about a can-0-worms!!!! :D

Very interesting dialogue. Some clarifying questions: Aren't red light and IR two different spectra of EM energy? Red light being literally the red wavelength range of visible light, and IR being a longer and slower vibrating expression than red light? I know they are right next to each other, and there is almost some "over lap" where the upper end of IR is hard to distinguish from the lower end of red light, but generally they are considered different. Generally speaking, IR is considered invisible to our visual perception while red light is quite visible. So are we talking about the benefits of red light or infrared here, primarily? And isn't IR just a fancy sciency-physics term for heat energy? Granted, IR is quite a broad spectrum, much broader than visible light, and so you might get extra or specific benefit from a broad spectrum source like the Sun verse say a heated blanket, but knowing that, perhaps being more specific with specific ranges is more helpful than just using the blanket term of "infrared"? Btw, not all the warmth we feel from the Sun is _direct_ IR. In fact, and thankfully, much of the IR that comes from the Sun gets absorbed and reflected by our atmosphere (if it didn't, we'd might be cooked, literally). A good percentage of the warmth we feel from the Sun is actually visible light getting converted into IR after being absorbed by and interacting with our clothes. This is why very bright white clothes feel cooler in the sun than very black clothes. The black absorbs more of the visible light and converts more of it into IR.
@Viva-Longevity2 күн бұрын
True confession: I originally put the word infrared in the title and on the graphic and the click rate was the lowest of any video we've produced lately. So I changed it to red light, cringing, because I know that's not what this episode is about. And the click rate went way up. Gah.

At one point, Chris asked about why Adventist pescatarians live longer than Adventist vegans. My hypothesis is that the DHA and EPA in fish makes the difference. Adventist vegans might or might not eat ALA omega-3 containing foods and the amount could vary among those who do consume those foods. Also, genetic variability determines how much of that ALA will be converted to EPA and DHA omega-3. I would like to know if any of those Adventist vegans took an algae based DHA supplement and what their longevity statistics look like compared to those who did not.

Would someone (knowledgeable) please clarify how high a fever is too high? People are always afraid that if you have a high fever from, say, the flu, that it will 'cook' your brain, which is generally ridiculous - even animals get fevers to jack up their immune systems. I get that drugs or maybe brain injury can break that barrier, but when does a 'regular' fever enter the danger zone for cardiac problems? And is this different for adults and children?
@Viva-Longevity2 күн бұрын
This is above my pay grade but I asked Google's Gemini to get the lay of the land: It's great that you're asking about fevers! Knowing when a fever becomes a serious concern is important. Here's a general guideline, but always remember that individual situations can vary: For Adults: 103°F (39.4°C) or higher: This is generally considered a high fever in adults. It's important to contact your healthcare provider if your fever reaches this level, especially if it's accompanied by other symptoms like a severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or difficulty breathing. 105°F (40.5°C) or higher: This is a very high fever and requires immediate medical attention. For Children: Varies by age: The "too high" threshold depends on the child's age: Under 3 months: A rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher warrants a call to the doctor. 3-12 months: A fever of 102.2°F (39°C) or higher is cause for concern. Over 2 years: A fever lasting more than 48 hours or reaching 104°F (40°C) should be checked by a doctor. Important Considerations: Underlying Health Conditions: People with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or certain medications might need to seek medical attention for lower fevers. Accompanying Symptoms: Pay close attention to any other symptoms besides the fever. Symptoms like severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, rash, difficulty breathing, or persistent vomiting warrant immediate medical attention, regardless of the fever's height. Fever in Infants: Fevers in infants under 3 months old are always concerning and require immediate medical evaluation. When in Doubt, Seek Medical Advice: If you're ever unsure about whether a fever is too high or if you're concerned about accompanying symptoms, it's always best to err on the side of caution and contact your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and determine if further evaluation or treatment is needed.

Good interview. I like this Dr., seems very knowledgeable. Was surprised when Chris said he wasn't aware of antibiotics given to animals are passed on to people who consume the meat. Essentially people are taking antibiotics and adding to the havoc of over antibiotic use. I believe they are then peed out, end up in the water supply, and consumed again and the cycle goes on. Farm raised fish also has the same problem as they are given antibiotics in their feed. And the comment on the not taking care of our mouths, brushing and flossing, ... bacteria goes to the heart that causes heart conditions. Looking forward to part two. I did buy one of the red light masks several years ago, stopped using it after maybe a year. but i have the battery recharging now:) Will start using it again. Chris, if I could make one suggestion, please don't take it negatively, but please let the interviewee finish his thought before jumping in with your own opinion/experience. I like what you have to say, its just that I feel the person hasn't been able to finish their thought, and it doesn't get completed and then its on to the next question, when he could have elaborated more.

If meat consumption is not a strong factor, what's the difference between them and the Seventh Day Adventists?

Good question! I've touched on that in a few episodes past. The General Authorities counseled to eat meat sparingly all the way up to at least 1960, but since then LDS have become huge meat consumers. They have the largest cattle ranch in the U.S. BYU's nutrition department via Ben Bikman, advocates an all-beef or nearly all-beef diet. That puts them at odds with the official church teachings and even President Nelson, who is mainly vegetarian. Beef is the iconic American fast food and very strongly associated with weight gain, and there are plenty of articles-even in The Deseret News and BYU publications-about the current LDS obesity crisis.

This is frustrating to me as one who sees Ben Bickman as a non believer. He needs to be counseled for promoting the exact opposite of where in The W of W the lord says he “prefers” they (animals) “not be used” President Nelson a vegetarian turned 100 this year. I’m sorry to say, I don’t believe Ben Bickman will come close to that age.

I think Joe eats a lot more fiber foods ie fruits and vegetables than he lets on. His interview with the guy who was the seeker of knowledge in “The Game Changers” had Joe thinking hard about Plant Based.

So I'm very familiar with a low carb influencer whose wife is vegetarian and they raise their sons eating a lot of greens... But low carb books sell. Hey, it's a living.

I am concerned about the name change. Are you not vegan anymore? Or is it just to communicate that you are mainly focusing on longevity? My suggestion would be to have two channels. "Plant Chompers" was on its way of becoming legendary and will be sorely missed if you decide to keep one one channel.

I'm vegan for all the reasons I frequently mention-heart disease, diabetes, global warming, water use, land use, pollution, the animals, antibiotic resistance, pathogens, pandemics, deforestation, the plight of slaughterhouse workers-but the name Plant Chompers was keeping too many people away from the channel.

All heat is IR, which may be what you are getting at?
