My first 49 Mercury by amp that I bought back in the 7 days had opening doors and trunk and came with a lot of accessories that I could have built it as a daredevil car that goes through fire loops and things like that. We had pretty cool models back then I'm 74 and models were $1.50 back in the 60s heck of a lot cheaper than they are now but I'm glad they are bringing back the old models

Listen to your opening. I'm in the same boat as you! I put up my models until the kids were grown. Now I'm retired and looking at the you tube videos with wide eyes.alot to learn. Keep at it my friend.

Nice build. I bought my first 49 Mercury back in 1969 from our local candy store. It was the original 1963 version in the taped narrow box. Sat on the shelf of the store for years. The price was still $1.49. I still have this kit built and displayed in my office along with my other model cars. It held up well the past 53 years. Great video!!! Thanks for doing the review.

This kit came out in 1963, I have an unbuilt origanal in my collection. They were moulded in black and were great kits for their time, and i think they held up well over the years

I found out my kit was a return. 30 + years ago someone must have brought this model back to the Hobbyshoo I managed. They started it and got into it very deeply and maybe lost a part or part was missing so went back in the stockroom on a shelf and I'm just sitting there so I bought it at discount . Hobby shops can't send this stuff back and get a refund on them pretty much stuck . So I started building it about a month ago and realize it's already been started. Whoever started the model cut the rear wheel wells out so I have to stick with tires that have the coarse tread on them. I think I'm going to build it like a street rod that somebody may have bought and didn't have a lot of money to put into and maybe the colors going to be like a utility green. I want to put the bench seat in instead of the bucket racing seats. To me the hardest thing about building car models in my opinion is settling on what color and scheme. Anyway nice job on this build their guy !

Just did a search here on utube about 49 Merc. because I want ideas on building this very model. I am 56, and when I was 24, I managed a " REAL" hobbyshop for several years. I bought tons of car models( that I still have today) with my employee discounts which was a little above cost. At times customers would come back with a kit claiming it was missing parts ( BS) . We would either give them another model or open up a kit and replace the parts. The returned Kits would sit in the back stockroom for years cuz our distributor would not refund us, or exchange. I took advantage of that and bought them real cheap. I haven't built car model since back when I was 24 and I just picked up the Hobby again about 8 months ago . This 49 Mercury kit just happens to be a kit that someone bought , started, lost a part and returned it. I am going to pick up where they left off. Lotz of work ahead.

I'm building the same kit except mine is from 1991, I'm doing a custom lowered weathered version, so far no issues.

That Max Wedge has some nice exhaust manifolds as well as the cross ram intake. I always liked kits that gave extra engines.

Just ran across your channel and subscribed! I see one or two other guys I'm subbed to on here. Those '49 Mercurys were some of the nicest cars built. Your model still looks nice though, even with the issues.

I have the more recent reissue of this kit, and no, they didn't fix any of the fit or flash issues. The trunk & hood fit on mine were horrible, flash on the body was pretty bad, body "glass" was short shotted.. Frame & engine went together well, though despite the flash. Unfortunately, I ruined the body in paint, and I can't get the paint off, so I need to find another kit. Oh, well. On the plus side, the kit comes with the white-walls in the box.

Nice build! You're obviously very good at detail painting. I would recommend painting the transmissions with Steel paint. Originally an AMT Trophy kit from 1963. The optional engine is a '63 Chrysler (Mopar) 413/426 Max Wedge. Custom parts by George Barris. This kit came with a custom steering wheel but may have been deleted for this issue. Round2 last re-released this kit in 2012 where they restored many optional parts from the early issues.

I will say model quality has been iffy likely from the beginning, there were better quality and worse quality through the years with the variety of makers..

History heads up… most American cars had few changes from 41 to 48… 48 and 49 was when real changes came. Too bad we ended up back in The Pacific fighting.. making 50, 51 and 52 low production years.

hello from Canada, good morning, I am just getting back into modeling, I enjoyed as a kid, so I have been watching other sites on here and watching this site with the 1949 Mercury, I have a model kit of a 1949 Mercury got it for my birthday last year AMT/ERTL Street Custom 1949 Mercury kit# 31762 not sure if mine is an earlier kit how would I find out or what info can you give me about my kit, love your channel found this build informative,
@Kryptosmaster4 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew of a site to check releases. It would make it easier to pinpoint what kit you have. Likely yours is fairly recent. This one I bought a long time ago. In the 80s.
@t.j.lemaster86533 жыл бұрын
I have the same exact kit and the Chrome on mine actually has a yellow tint to it and that yellow tint is actually chipping off.. it's like a clear coat or something the factory puts on them.🤔
@Kryptosmaster3 жыл бұрын
The quality control got less than desirable at some point.
@tomcline56314 жыл бұрын
Listen how crunchy that paper is! I believe it's from the eighties! Should be a copy right date somewhere on the destructions,or even printed on the body or some other big flat piece. Seems I remember one of the companies did that.
@Kryptosmaster4 жыл бұрын
It is from the 80s. I believe I said that in the video. There was no dates anywhere.

This is a Old Reissue of the Originsl kit of Say the 50s/60s. These 3 in 1 kits were Called "Old Trophy Series" they featured 3 ways to build car from.kit, at least 2 Complete full Engines. Sometimes 2-3 different intake & carb options for the Hot Rod Engine and tge Scale Trophy was in the kit hence "Trophy Series" Age of origibal tool with no cirrection on later releases is reason for things you note as difficulty its a old tool
@Kryptosmaster5 жыл бұрын
I remember the ads in 60s comics for amt trophy series. In fact, I just got a trophy in the kit I’m finishing up now. First time I’ve seen one in a Kit I’ve built.
@walterronk83485 жыл бұрын
@@Kryptosmaster interesting. Wondering if its just a fluke thing of Which kits you chose to build by AMT? My First Kit was AMT 49 Ford "Tijuana Taxi" mexico patrol car box art build option. I built 53 Ford Street Rod Series, 40 Ford Coupe Street Rod series, 2 -57 Belair kits 37 Chevy Convertible These were all reissues of Trophy Series dome still had the trophys in the kits others didn't Don't know why. but all had 2 complete Engines n 3-4 wheel options

Do they gain value over time if they are from like the 80s and 90s, if they arr brand spanking new.
@Kryptosmaster4 жыл бұрын
I don’t really follow the value of vintage kits much but some do get a lot more pricey. Especially if they are long unavailable or unique in some way.

Tell me more about those chrome pens please.
@Kryptosmaster4 жыл бұрын
Molotow chrome pens. You can get them online or at hobby lobby or equivalent stores. You’ll get sticker shock but they are great. I’d avoid the 1mm as I’ve found the tip dries up or something and then it won’t work. I use the 2mm for most everything.

Do you want to try a real pain in the ass model ? Try the Johan Chrysler turbine car ! I started that model I got all the paint down and then I had to walk away from it it's been sitting in my box for 3 months now I went on to other models until I'm ready to continue that is a pain in the ass cuz you got all the doors to have to line up at the trunk if you're really ain't like me as far as getting colors factually correct you got to research it and that's not always available.
@rickr4425 жыл бұрын
That re-issue has numerous parts deleted. Kit first issued'62-'63. Star should brush up on his kit history a bit before starting...
