This needs to be a constant mantra on all health and fitness channels. Much of this fitness stuff on KZbin and the world in general is all about how to fit into some absurd societal mould.

I remember Henry cavill and Zac Efron both stating that the workout regimen is brutal and wouldn't encourage it. Efron even said that he wouldn't work out to look like that ever again unless it was for a role that he thought would be worth going through that routine.

@@fastestdino2 Why is the first thing that pops into people's mind is that all these celebrities must be lying and they don't actually workout like that? Their physiques are obtainable if you actually follow their routine and put in the immense amount of hardwork they put. Henry's physique was all natural. If i remember correctly i think he even stated in an interview that he was told to use steroids to make his muscle gain goals easier for the role of Superman but he declined to use them because it would be dishonest.

@@Luna_Anonymous It's Not Natural, I don't see why there is anyone that can't see how they're clearly abusing PED's. Let's use an example. The Rock. He's clearly on PED's and anyone can figure this out lwhen looking at how he's almost two times bigger at 50 years old then how big he was in his early twenties . Anyone knows that our muscle detiriate with age due to the decline of our endocrine system and decrease in metabolism. Bodybuilders like Arnold Shwarzenegger and Sergio Oliva are perfect examples of this. So its not humanly possible for the rock to be that good of shape at his age even with staying consistent for 30 years unless he's on PED's. Not saying Celebrities don't work out as they say they do or follow a strict set routine cause they obviously do. It's that their crazy transformations for these movie roles can't be physically possible without PED usage.

@@Luna_Anonymous You cannot look like the rock naturally also no they are not. You can put on that much muscle and cut it off and put it back on over and over within months without peds. Also Chris Hemsworth never trains his legs by the looks of it so I wouldn't listen to whatever shit he has to say anyway. They are on peds, they say they aren't so there is no legal trouble.

@@Luna_Anonymous you just watched a whole video talking about the problems with those "honest routines". Yes, working out a lot (as long as you make sure to not injure yourself from exercise of muscle overuse) and eating protein will give you muscles and is a good idea. But sleeping for 3 hours and eating only some few very specific food items is not a good idea. So, use celebrities as inspiration, listen to actual trainers who will know not to tell you "just eat chicken and broccoli" because they will figure out that for some people it could backfire (because they would use it literally). I bet the 3 hours of sleep was also an exaggeration and probably of something temporary. They are also usually dehydrated while recording the shirtless scenes to make the muscles show up more, usually you'd get a little bit less definition (still amazing looking, but healthier).

Men's Health is a shitty magazine and they shouldn't be allowed to use celebrities pictures and image for this. Or maybe some of these..."celebrities" allow it because it's good marketing anyway? I wonder if they're all in and actually get good dough or it's the movie studios/producers that push this and let the magazine use the actors picture and supposed "training program" as a way to push the movie's marketing campaign forward.

and advice from Hollywood or 'Men's "Health"' (most trusted soyboy magazine) won't help you achieve either of those ends. these people don't even sustain aesthetic appearances. they blast the kitchen sink of gear to look a certain way for a role, and then they wash their hands of it once they're done. and the only reason they don't die is because they have a staff of doctors making sure that the studio's 300 million dollar investment doesn't fall over dead a week before shooting starts.

I love how Rob McElhenney put it in his insta post "Look, it’s not that hard. All you need to do is lift weights six days a week, stop drinking alcohol, don’t eat anything after 7pm, don’t eat any carbs or sugar at all, in fact just don’t eat anything you like, get the personal trainer from Magic Mike, sleep nine hours a night, run three miles a day, and have a studio pay for the whole thing over a six to seven month span. I don’t know why everyone’s not doing this. It’s a super realistic lifestyle and an appropriate body image to compare oneself to"

Probably the worst cardio to do daily if you also body build. The systemic stress it will put your joints under will tire you out for other physical activity. The best cardio to do is something low impact that still moves a lot of the body like rowing, cycling, swimming, elliptical.

From 2017, I started doing calisthenics cause my influencers were all cali athletes and not these "celebrity fitness influencers". I just ate clean, trained and didn't give af about how i looked like as long as i was within the healthy bodyweight mark. It was the best decision I've made in my whole life.

@@pradyota1899 it is absolute bs to say weightlifting has a “shelf life” of 15-20 years. It is also a myth that it damages your joints. Studies show that, assuming you lift with proper form at safe weights, weightlifting is good for your joints (just like calisthenics). And I’m not sure what denser muscles has to do with sustainability.

can confirm, was unemployed for a year and its much easier to find the time to work out and cook healthy food when you dont have to work. gained 10kg of muscle working out 15 minutes a day. only used protein shakes that i mix myself, nothing chemical.

I've always been a naturally thin woman, I weigh 43kgs at 152cm. However, I'm extremely out of shape, I would get tired easily and sleep more than normal. Health has nothing to do with the outer appearance. Seeing muscled out celebrities doesn't mean they are healthy. A lot of them take drugs...

Celebrities are commonly used as marketing tools to spread & promote fitness misinformation designed by companies to mislead & take advantage of beginners so they buy into their products. Another fantastic & important video that sheds light on some of the biggest issues of our industry! Well done Josh! 💪

It’s also pervasive in the fitness & nutrition industry as well whenever someone “sells out” to companies that pay them big bucks to endorse products that are unethical, ineffective, or even unsafe. It’s unfortunate what some people do for short term monetary gain.

And yes, that’s a much bigger conversation for another time, and I’m thinking about covering it one day soon myself. Rob McElhenney, the actor who plays Mac on Always Sunny, has undergone some insane body changes over the years- most significantly, he became obese for his role in an incredibly short period, then not only cut the weight very quickly but became absolutely shredded. When asked about it by Men's Health, he bluntly said that as a rich and famous actor, he could afford the serious of investment of money and time it takes to dedicate himself to his body with a team of experts planning his every workout and preparing his every bite of food for him. He admitted that he is extremely fortunate to be able to put this kind of money and work into his body, because he knows that 99.9% of people simply don't have the resources for that kind of a transformation. Looking a cer5ain way is his job, and he has plenty of money to make it happen. Most people have jobs that take time and energy away from their health and physique, not contribute to it. His candor was refreshing, and definitely not what the interviewer wanted to hear.

I like how all of these fitness advice gloss over the basic trouble that most people would face. Usually, especially if you're in a family, food is not your independent free choice. It's what's put on the table by discussion and whoever can cook and cost of food.

The biggest problem is when they say just take like 5k or 6k calories. U can do that with mass gainers. Problem? U will get a lot of fats rather than muscle even if you work out. Muscle growth does not correspond to the amount of food intake and there is a limit the body builds muscle even if you work out religiously

If the training plan is like: train 3 hours a day and or train even twice a day, know that it's a juicers plan, without that juice our body can do like 90 minutes of intense training. If they say : eat whatever you want and just like 4000 calories, know that diet doesn't matter to them as much as it matters to us normies. To achieve what they achieve you really need to eat a shit ton of food to even come close to what is necessary. I feel that I myself and many others have been blinded for a long time. Im thankful that the fitness induesty at least somewhat became aware of its double standard of marketing and selling stuff and actually helping people to achieve their goals realistically.

If you wanna get result as fast as possible you need to count calories but even if you don't you will see changes which in my opinion is still a good choice. Add small changes to your diet like limiting soda drinks, eating fast food and staff like that. Instead prepare homemade burgers. You gonna be more mindful about quantity and calories. Add regular exercise like weightlifting 2 times a week (yes, even twice a week is effective in a long run). Get a training program from either youtube or google it. As long as you do compound lifts and train whole body you will see result. You don't need perfectly optimized training program. Do squats, deadlifts, bench press both inclined and flat, biceps curl. You need to write down how much you lift and how many times. Let's say 3 sets of 10 reps squat. Write it down. In next week add just a little, even the smallest possible plates. Lift it up the same amount of times and boom you have progress. That's it! Good luck.

start with cardio man. ideally, 30 minutes 5 times week but don't jump to that. 2/3 days to start if you're not in shape. and a good 5 to 10 monute yoga routine you can do everyday. The flexibility and cardio are a really good base to start anything. Good luck!

Great video! As a psychologist, I do appreciate the effort you put in highlighting the issues! I see a steep increase in BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) and multiple eating disorders, depressive mood states caused by low self-esteem. And it is a product of our toxic culture in which aesthetic appearance is sold health. Couldn't be any more further from scientific truth, so thank you for using your platform to spread awareness!

It's especially interesting when knowing that real warriors, like the ancient gladiators, looked nothing like these unnatural body shapes and in fact where a lot more chubby and had a lot more belly fat, but were still really fit and strong.

For real. I use to weigh 210 lbs (I was 50 lbs over weight.) I didn't believe in any of the stuff he said (largely because he is an actor, so how could I trust him.) Now I weigh 170 lbs, literally just based off his statements. I exercise for about 5 minutes a day, and eat healthier now. Of course I am not looking like him or any of the other Hollywood actors, but I feel way more energized the physical differences are so much more relieving. I can even fit in some size small shirts (though I mostly wear mediums.)

What I've learned over the years is that fitness needs to become a habit, and as I've gotten older the only thing that gives me energy and makes me feel really good is exercising - and I don't do anything crazy. As Josh states in the video, if people who should be exercising and thinking about exercising constantly hear that they need to work out for hours a day and eat these extremely limited diets, it puts up all kinds of mental barriers. Another part of this is that these people who train celebrities seem to not be giving much sound advice - but, also, they should be talking about sustainable health and fitness, and not promoting this idea that fitness= endless work and sacrifice. Again - I'm thinking in terms of the masses and how these Hollywood fitness myths (meaning that all this is done without juicing) send a harmful message about fitness to the world at large.

But when you’re a young GenZ person inundated with social media imagery day and night you just wanna look undeniably fu*kable. They tell themselves “I’ll be happy when…” not realising they’ll never be because they’re living their lives playing by their “influencers” rules rather than their own. I was probably just as “influenced” by over-idealised macho action hero physiques and video game characters in the 80s, 90s and even 00s because I was young and my brain was malleable 🧠. The influence was far less intrusive, turbulent, and provocative as it is now though, so I consider myself lucky I got a childhood prior to social media ripping society apart. I learned to interact with people because I was given no other choice.

Yeah and getting 5+ years of gains from it im 3 months is not possible as a natty. When i started lifting 2 years ago i was around 163 pounds and i went up to around 205-208 pounds my current weight by progressive overloading. And i ate whatever i wanted like microwavable burritos and cereal. I look decent but im not like 7% bodyfat like those dudes i am at like 15% bf, but im happy with my results. Anyone knowlegeable with natrul bodybuilding knows they're bull💩 with thier "superdiet" aka roids.

As someone who’s maintained an active lifestyle since my late teens (over a decade now), working physically demanding jobs, hiking, running, and cycling regularly, I was frustrated that I could never get to a point where I had movie star abs. I put in the core work and kept track of calories, did the whole deal. After this long, I’ve realized “healthy” for me means being strong and fit but having enough around my midsection that I have some reserves in the tank and a little warm insulation during the colder months of the year. As nice as it would be to have a double-take six-pack, I’ve done enough research to realize the guys who pull this off are either a) doing some kind of crash diet and fitness plan coupled with crazy techniques like dehydration to make that shirt-off scene look great or b) have been focused on this for years and will be continued to for years, because their bodies as actors are a huge part of their selling point. I’m sad it gave me so much self-shame during my teenage years but I’ve come to appreciate where I’m at and am not really worried about the aesthetics anymore.

At 40 I was very displeased with my health and look. It took me 10 years of training 6 times a week to gain 30 pounds of muscle. If someone can achieve the same results in a year or less, it is obvious that person had some 'help' from the medication departement. Thanks for the video!

I will turn 26 in less than two months, and I remember how these celebrities ruined my progress back when I was a teenager and only now am I beginning to realise and tell others. Rock used to say that he would work out so hard, he would vomit. He was my childhood hero! I would even put in more time and get injured! I am so grateful that guys like MPMD and you have risen up to spread this information because there are teenagers out there now who may be duped by these selfish, and yes, selfish, egomaniac, lying celebrities who feed people lies for money, the money they got from teenagers like me who believed him. I remember years ago The Rock came out saying that people are just jealous of his hard work and progress and want to attribute it to steroids, and I believed him. He promoted the crap out the movie Hercules and even put out his LEGENDARY training programme, and the teenager me and my friend were at the gym working hoping that we may get at least some progress. Little did I know that he was necessarily "The People's Champ" or at least, not the way my gullible mind saw it! If you watch the video again, they exaggerate the crap out of everything, even THEIR EATING! "Hard calories!" Just imagine how privileged and selfish you have to be to lie and promote your movie by stating that eating chicken was hard work. You guys are saving the new generation of boys! Keep doing you :)

My celebrity fitness influencer was Sylvester Stallone in his Rocky movies. But I didn't copy his workouts. I made up my own, along my own diet. So yeah. Fitness celebrities can still be a good influence, as long as you don't try and copy the things they do. Just be inspired enough to do your own thing.

Frank Zane has a good book for over 50 people and also the book Barbell Prescription that applies common sense for older trainees. Both have advanced degrees and decades of health and fitness experience. Frank Zane was my favorite Mr. Olympia.

My personal way of overall fitness is just 3 simple things that I find can be very flexible to anyone regardless of what and how they want to get into shape 1. Sleep: I find that if anyone can get good proper sleep, that performance and most importantly mood is rocketed just by improving your sleep schedule 2. Diet: My own experience with myself is that having a simple, but very well balanced diet like getting the proper macros and micros from fruits, vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins is a very easy, fairly adhesive, flexible, and affordable way of getting in better shape and making your experience during this diet more bearable . I personally find that plans that can extremely flexible to fit the individuals needs and cost are very appealing. However I cannot state this enough to everyone; You must experiment and test what works for YOU and YOUR genetics. 3. Exercise: I tend to think for newcomers to physically fitness that people must clearly state their goals and purpose for their journey. I want people to clearly state if they want to workout for aesthetics or functionality. I must know what they want to do in order for me to give advice and guidance for the most effective and efficient ways to work out. This rant however is just based off my own life experience and the advice I had given to others. My philosophy is for the person working out to both perform and feel their best, longevity and happiness over anything else. However I am always free and open to criticism and I will humbly stand aside if I am incorrect in any of my statements. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY

I have to admit this guy is right. My friend did an role as an actor to bulk up and he had to spend 6 months to gain a huge amount of muscle. Waking up at 3am to drown a protein shake etc. After the filming was finished he reverted back to his old size. You need to do something which is natural and you can sustain for you life, because it will become your new lifestyle.

If someone “reverted back” to their same size, that’s usually a dead give-away that the muscle was due to drugs and not consistent training lifestyle. Because without drugs, you generally only can get impressively big over the course of 2+ years of being on point.

You don't need a drastic transformation to be happy. I have gone to the gym for 8 months now, and I feel very happy with what I accomplished. I didn't even drink protein powder. But I got stronger and a bit beefier and leaner. Just be happy with pushing YOUR limit, feel confortable doing fitness if you enjoy it, and remember it's not a race, it's a whole life marathon you run on your own.

"No one's forcing you to follow their advice" They don't need to: The outside pressure, the aggressive pushing of marketing in movies, TV shows, adverts, magazines, etc, etc, not to mention the social pressure it generates (combined with everyone's warped self-perception as a consequence) is enough to do that. The celebrities may not be forcing us to be muscular if you're a man or thin if you're a woman, but every other message is forcing us, if not bullying us.

Throughout my 20s I told myself I was going to transform into my best self. I had a subscription to Mens Health, blogs, fitness content etc. I wanted to look like Superman and I thought this was realistic. What a tragedy. I followed it religiously, I couldn’t achieve the results no matter how much I sacrificed so I resulted to surgery, because nothing was going to stop me. It killed my mental state and took me years of recovery, body and mind. I lost myself and I still regret spending so much and putting my body through so much pain. I’m okay now, but I hate it took all of that for me to get to where I am now.

Sorry to hear about it bro. But it's okay don't beat yourself up too much since you never had someone tell you what is right and what is wrong. Don't have regrets about this in life! You did your best with what you could find but at least you worked hard and you must have gained something such as experience which you are sharing with all and sharing this experience can save a lot of youngsters from falling into into the trap. You have gained far more than you think. Be positive. Don't stress about it too much.

Starting working out at like 17 years old and within 2 years of being obsessed i developed bulimia, terrible self confidence and was tired and over exhausted every day due to men's health and all fitness advice as result of cutting over 2 years and still not feeling ever satisfied. Lost almost all my friends due to being grumpy all the time and didn't even make great gains being on like 1600 calories when I should have been at like 2400. After getting a injury and quiting dieting and working out for over 2 years I realized how wrong I was and only now I am making gains and starting to feel better

1600 cals for a young man is insane...my base consumption is around 2k without doing sport and I am older, therefore I should need less. Learn to listen to your body - when you are tired, take a pause/rest. When you are hungry - eat. Just stay away from large amounts of sugar and alcohol. Train regularly if possible (but don't forget to take off when your body / mind needs it). This can get you quite far when you are consistent.

You dont need fitness advice. You just need to eat healthy and exercise. 15 minutes of simple bodyweight exercises a day, light cardio a couple times a week, and a diet that has a lot of protein and fiber and limited carbs. Buying protein powder and oats and other supplements from bulkpowders is cheaper than buying food in a grocery store so you will also save money while doing it.

You are right but remember that the movie production doesnt give you so much of time to build sustainability. They have to literally create a perfect physique (if the role requires) in a matter of weeks. I think thats when gears come into the picture. I mean if i was in there shoes i'd probably do the same thing. Its take gear, work hard, crash diet and look great or lose your chance to earn millions and put your finances in jeprody. And you cant be transparent about it coz if you do, you gon lose those good rep. So its reasonable for them and that makes it equally important for channels like yourself to provide the right information for the general public. So kudos to you. (Excuse my bad english).

The things you talk about in this video are so important, and I am so happy that more and more people on KZbin and on the internet are addressing this problem. Kids these days are growing up with ads for supplements and training regiments that sell absolute lies, and it destroys them. It's all smoke and mirrors, and nobody until recently started to point it out. There is no health in extreme training regiments, there is no health in extreme diets, there is no health in peak performance athletes. Health is moderation, health is taking care of what you are given so you can age gracefully. Health is not aesthetics, health is moderation, education, and discipline.

Thank you for making these types of videos. When I was in high school, I would tell people a lot I wanted to look like Brad Pitt from Fight Club or Chris Hemsworth from the Thor movies. I was working out three times a day before during and after school, (I could during school because I was in a strength and conditioning class). I did not know at the time but I was going through terrible body dysmorphia because I had lost around 80 pounds and thought I could fill up my loose skin with muscle. I would always compare myself to Hollywood celebrities not knowing that the fitness advice they were giving was not good. Now I exercise because I enjoy it and because it makes me happier and healthier. I hope others can see this and your other videos and help them in similar situations I was in.

Thank you for this video. Everyone is always open to talking about how women are sexualized or portrayed with unrealistic body standards, I very rarely see people talking about men and how they are unfairly portrayed. They are all so dangerously pushed to look how they do in movies/shows. Hugh Jackman nearly fainted several times throughout wolverine, from dehydration. It's dangerous. Yes workout, get ripped or whatever your goal is, but make sure that goal is reasonable. Without steroid or other boosters, unhealthy diet, extreme and strict training and diet, and honestly genetics, your end goal is guaranteed to be something different than your inspiration. Remember to eat, eat well, eat clean, and train safely. The celebrities we see with those superhero bodies have damn near unfair standards with them, and are not healthy.

Yes! Crash dieting, dehydration, and overtraining aren't healthy or sustainable, and will cause major health issues down the line. And, of course, steroids are horrible for your health. The rise in body dysmorphophobia and eating disorders in young men is frightening.

When I first started working out I woke up 2 in the morning, I worked out, I heard Jocko going 72 hours without eating, So I did too, While working out and barely getting sleep, When I eat I ended up not eating much. I became 118 pounds, No gains and ended up in a bed depressed, Deprived, An confused. I started seeing gains when I got plenty of sleep, Plenty of food, An rest days after I worked out all week.

I watched an interview of michael fassbender because I was fascinated by his role as David in prometheus. When asked what he do, his answer was " I eat everything and I don't have a trainer, only thing I do is I don't eat after 1800" This makes a lot more sense because it seems practical.

Back then it was mostly body builders, wrestlers and sports stars who did the bad info spreading, male film heroes didn't have anywhere near such ridiculous body requirements. Yet it was harder to discredit since they were all pushing the same "illusion" of image and them keeping their secrets as part of their brand image, using traditional media of magazines and television just a one way dump of misinformation that was impossible to discredit being backed by massive mainstream machine.

Fantastic, I'm glad you brought this up. I'm of the opinion that everybody who is planning to start a strict workout and diet routine should get their blood work done and meet a nutrition management expert first.

I like that you include a clip of advice from Scooby. He was my first fitness "influencer". He made me believe in myself that I can build muscle by just doing workout at home.

As long as most people believe that sweets, soda, chips, frenchfries, peanutbutter, chocolate, wine, beer, bread, granola, pastry etc.. are ok ..they will fall short of their goals.

Another reason to like Chris Pratt! And thanks for the video man. I have been on my transformational journey for the last 6 months. Learning so much about training and nutrition along the way and I've realized consistency is the key. Sad for the people, especially youngsters who fall prey for these marketing gimmicks of quick transformation and get disheartened, when they don't see the quick results they were expecting. I really hope your video reaches more and more people.

People like to copy their idols and even want to become them… It’s nothing wrong to have an idol, an inspiration but you should see yourself as an individual and try to get the best out of yourself, become the best version of yourself, than you will understand you don’t have to be somebody else…

Thanks for another quality video Josh! There is so much dishonesty and hype in the fitness industry. I appreciate the light you shed on these topics. Unfortunately crash diets, quick fixes, and bad celebrity advice is sexier to the masses than hard work, discipline, consistency, and common sense.

The thing is Everyone is different and needs different things for better results. Also most celebrity's have personal trainers and nutrationalists, which isn't something regular People usually have, I would say though training twice a day 6 days a week is heavily overtraining, yes maybe once a day 6 days a week if you have a good training split, hitting it twice a day 6 days a week won't have as good effect on muscle building as the amount of calories you burn is going to be doubled yet you can easily do enough to break muscles down with just the one session

What they don't tell you is that most of these actors weren't always actors The rock as an example was an athlete before he started acting he played football in school and was a professional wrestler so he was pretty big and fit from the beginning of his acting career also most actors bodybuilders and athletes have been involved in fitness training since their teens and the body on the magazine cover is that of a person in their 30s or 40s mr Olympia didn't didn't become Mr Olympia 6 months after he started lifting weights

Dude when i started to workout, struggled with the diet, for various reasons, from being lazy to prep meals, to not wanting to overstuff myself(which happened quite often), until i sat down and decided what body i was aiming for, and i went for it Edit: I also thought that eating was supposed to be boring(not because of lack of variety)

My fitness icon is Ironwolf- he put in about 10 years of natty calisthenics with no supplements and a clean diet. He ain't huge, but he's a beast from putting in the work. Folks like that inspire towards realistic goals.

Josh Brett, you rock. I am a 72-year young gay male. After finding myself diabetic in 2003 (had been, according to Drs, for far longer) I lost down to 145# (5'5"). I rarely ate anything outside of grilled, boned, skinned chicken breasts & steamed veggies. I added in yogurt (to get active digestive cultures). It worked. However, after a few years of this I became complacent. I paid the price of health decline & weight gain. I am now on the road to getting back to where I had reached a good goal. 90% of these online "health" wackos need to take a long walk off of a short pier! Preferably on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia (YES, Great White Shark territory!)
