PR206 is my favorite base skin tone for all shades. I'm so sad it's going, but I've stocked up at least. FWIW the Winsor and Newton version of Brown Madder is pretty good, matches the standard PR206 shade, hard to rewet as usual, DS is the most saturated that I've tried but W&N is a close second. FWIW DS Deep Scarlet is a pretty good substitute.

I like PR206 a lot, especially the browner colors . I have the Maimeri Blu brown madder alizarin and Roman Szmal's Quinacridone Maroon which are more like a red brown type of color. Also have the Winsor & Newton's (professional) Permanent Alizarin Crimson which is similar to the Cotman's paint in your video.

I ran out to buy the w& n brown madder when I first heard the ‘rumour’ and was glad to have found a tube of one of my favorite colors 😅!

I will miss the Madder Brown by Winsor and Newton as it’s lovely for skin tones. They also had a Permanent Alizarin Crimson PR206 which was also a nice colour, similar to your Cotman swatch. I stocked up on both but apparently the tubes were mislabelled so contained the new formula. I don’t like the new Brown Madder PR179 at all, it’s like Perylene Maroon which I don’t care for. I think PR102 would have been a much better replacement to keep the subtlety of the hue. The new formula for Permanent Alizarin Crimson is ok, not too different, but I wouldn’t buy it again. I definitely wouldn’t have bought a large tube of either had I known it was the new formula, and I have notified W&N that I got mislabelled tubes. They are going to look into it.

I have two different Cotman PR 206. Alizarin crimson hue and Rose madder hue.

Jackson’s Alizarin crimson IS quite brownish, quite similar to the replacement. I do not have the latter, such a shame the original colour is fugitive, it paints out so beautifully. I have the Schmincke Madder Brown as a half pan but will definitely be getting the Jackson’s as It is a colour I love and intend to use, the difference in price alone makes it a good purchase, there is so little difference colourwise between the DS and the J, and the tubes are a very satisfying size! Another very satisfying comparison, that last one was horrible! Thanks.

Too bad the pigment is going out. I love W&N's Brown Madder. I'm glad I grabbed a last tube when I could, but I wish I'd bought two.

W&N have two versions of this color, and I bought the Perm. Alizarin Crimson version recently. It's bright like the Cotman and the other is browner like the others. I also have the DS but just a small amount, not a lot left. I can't remember if I have this from Qor yet - I know I always look at this one Quinacradone Crimson paint and drool, it's a mix of PR122 and PR206. Their regular PR206 is a browner shade. But who knows which version they use for the Quin Crimson?

I use the W&N permanent Alizarin Crimson PR206 and the Cotman Rose Madder Hue PR206. They will both be replaced by PR179 as per the W&N website.

Guess I got a question that is not specifically related to this video and colours, but have you any experience with Old Holland watercolours? I got some and they seem totally different. (Very expensive, maybe that’s why I got the feeling they are a high quality and has some extra magic, idk I’m a beginner.)

Hiya Martin, Old Holland are one of the very best watercolour paints available but they don't appear much on KZbin because of the obsession with Daniel Smith paints that a lot of people have, not me though! They are incredibly highly pigmented as you will know and some of the most beautiful colours available, plus they have been selling their oil paints since the 17th Century and their watercolour paints since the late 18th C. @@davidmolloy126 thanks. What a interesting answer. I didn’t get notifications that you answered so luckily I looked over here again. (Think that’s a bit weird, anyhow.) I made 3 different colours triangles with 3 different primary colours. Daniel Smith, Rembrandt and Old Holland. To me, Daniel Smith is very beautiful and powerful. Rembrandt also rich, but I would say Daniel Smith seems better. But they are very alike. Old Holland seems different though. I got the feeling I would use them if I was a great artist. (Whiteout considering how they are to work with. Maybe more difficult. I heard the lift easily.) They feel classic and magical when dried. But I probably will go for Rembrandt because of the price, if I keep on painting and need more paint. Anyhow. It’s very cool hearing others experience. Especially people who can paint. I just started.

I stocked up on the DS and WN versions, for the WN both the brown madder and PAC. I really like this color, it’s a shame it’s discontinued. And the Sennelier/Jackson’s is just BROWN, not much of an Alizarin Crimson at all. I have the Sennelier version.

I bought the Jackson’s version for the fun of it. I like the pigment but I think the name is misplaced.
