12:00 The US is supporting Saudia Arabia's war/proxy war in Yemen. If the argument is that it's because the US is supporting Israel, it just doesn't hold up. Where are all the protests against the Yemen war?

Good point, it's not even close to being a cause celeb. People will say but they aren't a liberal democracy as if that's some kind of argument. Our participation is similar though either way. It's a strange argument. Is it really an argument or just a cloak?

The “protestors” performed “haters hating” with egregious arrogance and supreme self-righteousness. If these folks cared about Gazans they would be there feeding them, rescuing them from the rubble. Instead they set up summer camp on the lawn and demanded to be fed. Oh yes, I think they also had a creative dance performance and art projects and practiced their chanting. So cute!

If these students don't like how the universities are structuring their investments, then they need to transfer to one they agree with. I value and respect you both so much I hesitate to rush to criticism when I find a point of disagreement, but I would challenge the assertion that ending the war now without the IDF going all the way into Rafah and utterly destroying Hamas's ability to rule Gaza doesn't necessarily lead to less loss of Palestinian lives. In the very near term, a ceasefire certainly would lower the looming death toll. On a longer time horizon, however, leaving Hamas to retake Gaza seems to me very unlikely to be good for the Palestinians in any way shape or form, and will inevitably lead to another major military confrontation. I could of course be wrong, but I believe that's the broad consensus of much of the Israeli leadership (and people), and I happen to believe it's right.

As a parent of a University of Michigan student who graduated this year I found myself thrust into some of the madness. As a family we were worried that there might not be a Graduation ceremony and that the same students who didn't have a high school graduation would yet again be left feeling cheated. At the University of Michigan the protestors were not only demanding immediate divestment they were also demanding that the University abolish the Campus Police Department and cut ties with all surrounding Police agencies. These same demands were made in 2023 by the Graduate Instructors Organization when they went on strike demanding higher wages. Its Laughable at best. At one point the protesters at the U of M encampment were seeking donations for "food and supplies". Due to overwhelming support of their efforts they found themselves with excess funds and tweeted out that they no longer needed donations but put a link to a non profit to help those struggling in Gaza. I don't think I have any words for that one.

We are so accustomed to conducting half ass wars. Beginning with Truman pulling back Gen. McArthur in Korea. What if those WW2 Generals would have gone half ass? Just a thought! I hate war!! At the same time I hate cowardly bullies.

Oh, and one more thing: I was at Rutgers when John was there, lived in the same dorm and had some of the same friends. He may recall that Rutgers was the first school where student protesters forced the issue of divestment from Apartheid South Africa to be debated. I don't remember if John was involved with the he protests but the students did take over part of a building, ridiculously, the Student Center. President Bloustein's response was to laugh and say that it was our building. What actually got the boards, (Rutgers has two), to divest was that the protest caught the attantion if the Assembly Majority leader who was black and he brought pressure as only a state legisltor can to a state university.

How about we are here to learn. One part of being a grown up is not letting things from the outside world dominate you. This is a lesson on focus.

Just heard John on NPR re language. Changing terms can accomplish what it is meant to do. Example: too often, trafficked and abused children are referred to as underage, specifically underage women. Call them girls and boys. They are children. Another: Calling their abuse, sex. It isn’t sex. It’s rape. These changes are changing how we see these violent predators

Can you folks discuss the Roger Forston killling? I say this as an outsider, and old middle class white guy who grew up in suburbia and who rarely saw police.

The message of the protesters is muddled because many, if not most, are calling for the dismantling of Israel while others are just simply protesting the war. These are two completely different intentions, which makes this feel more like Occupy Wall Street than the singular messaging against South African Apartheid or Vietnam War.

Most "thinking" people do agree with you, the problem is the number of idiots who are a direct result of what's become a worthless education system is overwhelming at times. Experience once was the best teacher, but there are so few real experiences anymore. This will be our common experience. I remember the riots of the 60s and 70s, many of them were just an opportunity to be asshats, same is true today. I'm grateful for the student protests, and for the two of you.

I suggest you read Eitan Hersh's research about the experience of Jewish kids on campus this year. Then you will know, Glenn Loury, that the vast majority of Jewish students were deeply affected in a bad way.

Agree. I was very surprised to hear Glenn’s callous response to the empathy John showed his students. Glenn, you definitely need to read up on what was happening to Jewish students on campus.

Great episode and am very glad to have Glenn back. Thought John did a very good job talking about his former office - and no question I am completely fed up with the occupations (including the one at my alma mater). As a Canadian I don't have the view on race that you two do but am understanding better even though by our country's standards much of it would be "out there" (hint: Justin Trudeau presents as ultra-woke but that is not the national view) Anyhow, any excellent session and am very VERY glad to see Glenn up and about with far less angst about his hospital experience than I expected. You two are an important part of my weekly listening.
