"Let's do a video on Promare," we said. Turns out it really wasn't that easy to do cause there really isn't that much to write about besides how ridiculous it is. That being said i'd love to see more films like this, it's nice when it's obvious that a studio got to take the reins and do exactly what they wanted to do. I guess that's kind of the message though. ANYWAY, i have NO idea what we're covering next week so it'll be as much of a surprise for you as it is for us, thinking about going oldschool cause it's been a minute. look forward to it! wash your hands everyone! -Mike

There's alot of social commentary in the film regarding government control and oppression that I found pretty effective I went into the film expecting it to be a turn off your brain dumb action movie, and I was quite surprised at how engaging it was, in addition to the crazy action. Anime fans who just write it off clearly don't understand the importance of visual storytelling or directing.
@johnnymillar90564 жыл бұрын
"Maybe I missed something. Tell me in the comments." Okay let's write an essay on how Promare is genius. So the first thing I wanna say is that in film, character is king. You've constructed this video just to talk about the ridiculous heights this film can attain, but without looking at the heights that story and character reach, emotionally. Galo is dumb as hell but this movie ain't. Only a smart well written piece of fiction can take you on the characters' journeys. I will cover how Promare does this in the first half. In the second half I'll discuss why the imagery of holocaust, oppression and fascism is absolutely intentional and not tacked on, but also quite relevant. You made a point to talk about how Aina didn't have much of a character. We'll come back to her. Let's talk about three characters who are incredibly fleshed out. We have the dumb jock with a heart of gold, Galo, trying to do the right thing in the most stylish way possible. The cool headed but compassionately driven Lio, head of a rebellion against a fascist system. Finally the villain Kray Foresight - a man who's drive to save the few causes him to endanger everyone. The movie wants you to know from minute 1 that the Burnish aren't bad. You see them trying to live their lives as normal but their difference, the fire that burns within them, explodes out killing those around them. But it's obviously not their fault. The movie never wants to fool you into thinking the Burnish are the bad guys. The first scene with our main characters sets everything up perfectly. We have Galo who repeatedly goes against orders from his Captain because he feels like he can do this alone. He can save people because he's doing the right thing and stylin' on the bad guy. When we meet Lio, perhaps the movie wants us to think "maybe only these Burnish are bad and not all" because Galo is great and you want to believe he's doing the right thing. But that's why we don't immediately get the revelation the something is wrong from Lio. We get it in the everyday world. The pizza boy is taken in by the obviously SS-inspired Freeze Force. Some other people have also noted that the symbol for the Burnish, the pink triangle, was a symbol used against LGBTQ people by the Nazis. Doubt that was an accident. Galo's emotional reaction to this takes the viewer with him because we already know this guy loves to do the right thing in the most stylish way. Fascism is neither right nor is it stylish. Galo is shook to his core. The audience, from the beginning, new this was coming, but it had to happen to prove that Galo can see fascism when put front of him. He knows that pizza is pizza no matter who makes it. We are introduced to the lake where we're teased with the idea of Aina as love interest. This is absolutely a red herring. She is given little characterisation beyond the obvious because the movie WANTS you to think they are going down that old trope of boring love interest. But actually Aina is a hard working member of the team who's sister is key to the plot. Trigger loves to play up the bond between siblings, whether those are adopted siblings like Kamina and Simon or blood related. We learn around this time why Galo hero worships Kray. At this point for Lio we are beginning to see the effect that the oppression has on the Burnish when they break out of their prison. They are weak, dying, underfed and without support from anyone but each other. Lio tries and fails to save the life of one of his own and Galo watches on in horror as she dies. Galo now sees the damage of what's been done to these people. The horror of it all. But because we know why he loves Kray we believe that he believes that Kray JUST DOESN'T KNOW. I can go on and explain why each point in the story makes perfect sense, emotionally, but I think you can probably figure it out from here. Let's skip to the D E U S E X M A C H I N A It means "god from the machine." Now, what element of deus ex machina makes it bad writing? That the solution appears, unbidden - the story is resolved without using the things set up. However, Deus ex machina is actually a pun here. The machine was actually built by human hands to fight back against oppression. The machine comes from the humans. And the machine does not solve the plot. In fact the fight between the Deus ex machina and Kray's robot is a chance for a philosophical battle between Galo and Kray now that Galo knows Kray is a bad guy. So if that robot doesn't solve the conflict of the film, what does? Unification. We learn that the Burnish flames are actually beings from another universe that mean us no harm. And Galo and Lio unify their beliefs. Take down the bad guys, do the right thing, fight the OPPRESSION and DO IT WITH SOME FUCKING STYLE. Kray breaks down in rage, revealing he is in fact also a Burnish, an ashamed, self-hating one who believes he can overcome the fire inside him instead of embrace in. He can rid the world of the thing he feels is wrong with him. Kray explicitly burned down Galo's house and kills his family and hid it from him for years. But what does Galo say? "I'm going to save everyone. Lio, the earth, even you!" I understand you never finished Gurren Lagann? Because Trigger always write about ANTIFASCISM. Fascism dictates that only one type of person will have privilege and the rest will be persecuted and killed. Its an inherently exclusionary ideology. The antithesis to this is inclusivity. There's a reason that Lio is deliberately androgynous, that the Burnish are represented with those pink triangles, that the Burnish aren't harmful if they are embraced instead of persecuted and killed and that the movie climaxes on a kiss between two men. THIS MOVIE, LIKE ALL ART, IS UNAVOIDABLY POLITICAL. This movie, like all Trigger anime, posits that we are all one, especially in the face of oppression. We are all equal and we must not allow ourselves to be divided by those base instincts to control, dominate and separate. The action, the ridiculousness and the FUN comes from trying to convey this nuanced and beautiful idea in a modern, exciting way. I feel like the creators would be very sad to hear your reaction of just "dumb fun." Because the fight against fascism is never ending. We always need these stories. I haven't even went in depth on how Lio's, Kray's and Aina and her sister's arcs play into the full story. Rewatch it with your eye on the emotional journeys and relationships and how the action is all a metaphor for how they evolve and clash. It will be an entirely different experience for you, I hope. Who the hell do you think they are?!

In portuguese the subject before the DE is implied to belong to the subject after the DE, so in my brazilian mind, Galo said "Lio is mine" and Lio said "Galo is mine", it changes the dynamics of the interpretation, but the fact that they went along with eachothers "thing" is already enough for me (Lio named a mecha, going along Galo's anime-ness, and Galo "lit a fire" and burned down the whole world, going along with Lio's fireboi theme) Side note: in portuguese galo means rooster, so one of my two neurons was like "COLORS, MUSIK, GAY" and the other one was like "kek, galo is rooster"

I don’t think that Promare was intended to mirror the Holocaust, although it’s obviously super easy to read it that way. I think it’s more just a generalized metaphor for oppression, and depending on the parts you choose to focus on you can easily apply it to any group. A lot of people pointed out the parallels with illegal immigration in the US, or the LGBT symbolism that’s there too. Either way, the story is obviously just a vehicle to the insane and amazing visuals, so I have a feeling they didn’t actually put a ton of thought in to the deeper meanings.

I learned about this trailer months before they announced the North American release. I became OBSESSED with it. I devoured the soundtrack, especially the vocal soundtrack. I must have seen that trailer a hundred times in both English and Japanese. I watched the first five minutes that Trigger put out hoping, praying that it would get an English release. Then they announced it was coming to theaters in America and Canada and so we gathered some friends and watched it in a tiny, crowded room because they vastly underestimated how many people wanted to see it. I was holding my boyfriend's hand the entire time and I got so excited that I managed to squeeze our hands until the blood cut off and I just didn't notice because I was so engrossed with the film. I remember the mid-point of the film with the robot AI explaining what the Promare were and my friend was so flabbergasted she let out a half-laugh, half-squeak and covered her mouth with her hands to cover her gaping mouth. The entire theater erupted when Deus Ex Machina appeared. That was when I knew: Trigger knew EXACTLY what they were doing. I love a good story as much as the next person but Promare tickles my brain in such a way that it genuinely gets me pumped and excited to watch. It's almost like a theme park ride than a movie. And I pity the fool who gets too caught up in the ham-fisted story and not enjoy the spectacle of it.

In the same way that Gurren Lagann is a more philosophically mature Evangelion, essentially climbing the hierarchy of needs to self-actualization and the moral imperative call to action, this movie condenses it down very effectively to feature length. In my experience, similar movies either jam too much in and it becomes a mess, or don't adequately convey their message in 75-120 mins and it becomes meangingless. Bonsai: There's also a romantic sub plot between Galo and another fire fighter... LioxGalo shippers: we would like to have a word with you On a serious note, I didn't really get the impression this movie mirrors the Holocaust while watching, but I can certainly understand the thinking behind that. The first thing that came to my mind was illegal immigration in the U.S. particularly for the Latinx community, probably because it hits so close to home. After all, the group tasked with detaining immigrants is called ICE, and like the Freeze Force, their methods of doing this are a contentious issue.

That "romantic subplot" Galo is a himbo if he didn't notice. The guy had no romantic interest in Aina the whole movie. That ice-lake scene screamed straight-bait to me and I love it.

Aina was more than her relationship with Gallo. She was also about her relationship with her older sister. Ignoring that is like ignoring Lio's relationship with the Mad Burnish and the Burnish in general.

You can’t convince me Galo wasn’t a burnish. He got lit on fire too many times and came out unscathed. He fights fires shirtless for crying out loud and almost none of his gear protects his torso. The only other explanation is that this himbo of a man is too stupid to die.

My only "complaints" about this video is about the mention that there's a romantic subplot between Galo and Aina and her character description. I watched Promare the other night and I'm ngl, I don't remember a single instance where Galo showed any romantic affection towards Aina. Even in that bait-kiss on the frozen lake, Galo only leaned in to get a better look at the ice Aina was almost laying on top of because something was reflecting in it, and then he immediately dropped her like a bag of dog food. Watching the movie I thought it was a little obvious Aina had feelings for Galo, but it was unrequited. However, I also found that those weren't her only personality traits. She cared about her sister, for one. She cared about her crew. She's a really good pilot too. Anyways, other than that I thought this video was extremely well-done!
