PUPPY TIPS - Inappropriate Chewing

This video is part of my Puppy Tips series on my KZbin channel. This video goes over proper chew toys for your puppy and figuring out what toys your puppy wants to chew on. Many times when you give your puppy suitable chew toys of all different types and sizes, they don't want to chew on your items.

Kristin - do you have any recommendations for a puppy chasing adult cats? We have a 3 month old lab/rottie/plott mix. He loves to play and has taken to clicker training very quickly. One cat is willing to tolerate his attention but he often goes too far. Any advice you have would be great. Love your channel!

I love most of Kristin's suggestions except for the recommendation to use the "bone" chew. I use to use chews like this, now she has fractured teeth. My vet said it was due to chewing on items such as the one in the video. Who would ever guess these chews, are similar ones, that can be purchased in any pet store are fracturing our dogs teeth. The fractures line is so tiny, it looks like a line you might draw with a pencil, you may not even be able to see it. I only was able to see the fractures on xrays of my dogs mouth. The advise my vet gave me was, it you can bend it, it is to hard and can fracture your dog's teeth. He stated that dental surgery is a big part of his practice now due to these hard, non-flexible chews. Remember, rule of thumb, can bend it, don't give it to your dog. This applies to chew, food and toys.

Terry Crissman Ouch! I'm sorry to hear about your dogs tooth! That's incredibly rare for a dog to fracture his or her tooth on a chew, if it was a smoked knuckle or something, yes it can happen quite frequently. It also could be if your dog had weaker teeth (nutrition and genetics) which can cause tooth brittleness. Dogs teeth are designed to chew, chewing bones is not only healthy, it's fantastic enrichment.

Kristin Crestejo Agreed, dog's teeth are designed for chewing but, the harder chews on the market today can, not will, fracture a dogs teeth. My dog's teeth definitely are not weak, being a American Bulldog, she has a powerful bite which more than likely contributed to the probllem along with the hard, non-flexible chews. Nutrition is not an issue, she only eats premium dog foods, $55+ for a 30# bag. Fractures are not as rare as you might think. My vet said the dental end of his practice has sky rocketed over the past several years due to chews our dogs shouldn't be eating. I also believe the right chews are healthy for our dogs as well providing enjoyment for our dogs. But, it is important to keep in mind that not all chews are safe and healthy for our dogs. If you can't flex it, don't give it to your dog. I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I'm sticking with what my Vet advised. There are so many products being sold today that are not the best choice for our dogs. Stick to flexible chews and "possible" fractures will never happen.
